Parallel Relationships, Architecture And Water : The Urban Spa, Tobi Aycock Apr 2004

Parallel Relationships, Architecture And Water : The Urban Spa, Tobi Aycock

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the relationship of architecture and water through the design of an urban spa that offers both a bodily and a poetic experience of water. Research included investigation of recent architectural projects that enhance and order the view, sound, and touch of water as well as projects that integrate fountains, showers and reflecting pools into the experience of a building.

In the design of the spa, the movement of water was based metaphorically on the natural water cycle: evaporation, condensation and collection of water in pools. The building presents fountains, rivulets, and pools in a descending sequence that ...

Baywalk Developing Landscape Memory, Rebecca Agnes Conable Apr 2004

Baywalk Developing Landscape Memory, Rebecca Agnes Conable

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this thesis was to investigate the narrative potential in the contours of a site, specifically, in contours shaped by dredge and fill. Contours provide a record of weather, growth and erosion as well as the processes of dredge and fill. In South Florida, our modification of both the coastline and inland swamps document the history of our occupation of the land. The record or memory of this change is often apparent only as an absence. This thesis design exposes the landscape narrative of dredge and fill in Miami's Biscayne Bay through the design of two ...

Mobile Architecture : Offering New Perceptions Of The City, Valeria G. Bettoli Apr 2004

Mobile Architecture : Offering New Perceptions Of The City, Valeria G. Bettoli

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the design of mobile architecture that challenges traditional ideas of site through the design of a museum to commemorate immigration to the United States. This thesis develops a floating, moveable, inhabitable structure that moves on the inter-coastal waterways of South Florida, within the public areas of Miami. The floating museum offers new perceptions of the city and new means of occupying its various settings. Its architectural elements do not change but are read differently in each location. The museum brings its exhibitions to the city as an event. One moment it is ...

Kit-Of-Parts Architecture : An Exploration Into The Standardization And Simplification Of An Urban Residential Building Unit, John Anderson Allmand Apr 2004

Kit-Of-Parts Architecture : An Exploration Into The Standardization And Simplification Of An Urban Residential Building Unit, John Anderson Allmand

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the design of a construction method that utilizes a single adaptable kit-of-parts system. The new system is designed to be flexible while also enhancing construction speeds without severely limiting the building's ability to merge into an urban fabric. This thesis proposes a residential structure to be built from a handful of simple structural units.

This is accomplished through the design of a residential building situated in an area of Miami currently under reconstruction.

Retail Centers For Community : Addressing Both Pedestrian And Car Traffic, Luis Asturias

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to redesign a commercial center in Miami, Florida in a manner that incorporates the needs of pedestrians as well as the automobile.

In my research, I studied projects that had been successful at integrating cars in retail design. I applied the strategies learned from this research to the design of a center that creates a positive interaction of pedestrian and car traffic, addressing the needs of the surrounding community.

I designed a master plan that includes a mix of residential, retail, commercial and parking space. The parking is designed so that the retail center ...

Palm Cottage Garden Historic Preservation, Vrushali J. Bharadwaj

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Historic landscapes are vital elements of our nation's cultural continuum and must be protected as a part of living fabric of the community. This thesis addressed the preservation of historic landscape gardens, focusing on design strategies that can make historic time legible in landscape. It proposed a landscape plan for the preservation of Palm Cottage Garden in Gotha, Florida, a significant historic landscape resource.

To determine the criteria used to establish how and to what period the estate should be restored, the Secretary of the Interior's Guidelines for the Treatment of Cultural Landscapes was followed. This process involved ...
