Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the turn of the century there has been a trend within the State of Utah toward more and smaller farms. The original farm units taken up by the early settlers of this state have been divided and subdivided until Utah today has hundreds of uneconomical-sized farms too small to be operated profitably under their present organization.

A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey May 1939

A Study Of Hybrids Between Sugar Beets And Mangel Wurzels With Reference To Color Factors And Sugar Content, Boyd Berrey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Preliminary unpublished work at the Salt Lake City Laboratory of the Division of Sugar Plant Investigations, Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, indicates that beets showing the Y color factor (9) were larger than sugar-beet types recessive for this color factor (y y). It was suggested to the writer that an investigation be made to determine whether or not yield and sugar content were correlated with color factors in beets. Linkages between the R and Y color factors have been reported by Keller (9), and the results indicate a close linkage between color factors R …

The Organization Of Content For Agricultural Teaching In Western Kansas High Schools, Leo Virgil Wedel

Master's Theses

The specific problem of this investigation pertains to, “The Organization of Content for Agricultural Teaching in Western Kansas High Schools." The study deals with the course of instruction in all high schools in the western half of the state teaching agriculture, except those teaching vocational agriculture. Schools teaching vocational agriculture are organized under the Smith-Hughes law. A school teaching agriculture organized under this law has a definitely prescribed course of study which does not apply to non-vocational schools. Thus, the necessity for the organization of a course of study for this latter type of school. This is a course that …

An Economic Analysis Of Farm Tenure In The Uintah Basin, Utah, Glen B. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Before presenting an economic analysis of farm tenure in the Uintah Basin, it will be helpful to consider some aspects of the historical, economic, and social background of that portion of the region included in this study.

A portion of the Uintah Indian Reservation, which was created in 1861, was opened to white settlement under the homestead and townsite laws on August 28, 1905 after 103,000 acres of farming land had been allotted to individual Indians living on the reservation and 276,000 acres reserved for Indian grazing lands and timber reserve.

Because of the large deposits of asphalt products that …

Index Numbers Of South Dakota Farm Prices, Leslie Max Brown Jan 1936

Index Numbers Of South Dakota Farm Prices, Leslie Max Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last generation, index numbers have gradually gone into general use among economists, statisticians, and business men. Because a farmer is a business man, it is important that he know what the trend of farm prices have been in the past and what the current trend is, so that he may anticipate changes which statistical analysis show are taking place in his particular phase of business. The Main objective of this study is to revise the existing South Dakota Farm Price Index. In order to furnish a comparable background for the presentation of these results it was found desirable (1) …

An Analysis Of Crop Production In South Dakota By Types Of Farming Areas, Warren Richards Bailey Jan 1936

An Analysis Of Crop Production In South Dakota By Types Of Farming Areas, Warren Richards Bailey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Farmers choose the crops they grow for two principal users; namely, for feed production or for cash income, or for both feed and cash income. It is true that some crops are grown for cover-crops, soil building, weed competition and a multitude of other miscellaneous purposes, many of them of equal or greater importance in the individual case than the two uses of crops which are the basis for this analysis. Crop production in South Dakota has been discussed since the first records of yields were available. the usual unit for production was the legal bushel of a specified weight.

An Analysis Of The Expenditures Of South Dakota Counties From 1919 To 1935, George H. Phillips Jan 1935

An Analysis Of The Expenditures Of South Dakota Counties From 1919 To 1935, George H. Phillips

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Three important studies are involved in an investigation of the cost of a governmental unit. These are expenditures, receipts, and indebtedness. The result of the three studies, properly coordinated, will yield what is known in public finance as "net expenditures" or, if the government under scrutiny should meet with favorable financial conditions, the final study might result in "net receipts". This study will consider only that phase of the cost of government which can be arrived at through an analysis of the gross expenditures of the counties of South Dakota. The term "expenditures" as used herein will, therefore, be taken …

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler May 1934

Studies On The Comparative Value Of The Hot Treatment (Krantz Patent) And Common Methods Of Handling Barnyard Manure, Orval E. Winkler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Antidating written human history the dung of animals, chalk, marl, wood ashes and other substances were probably used to increase the productivity of the soil. These practises found their way into the earliest farming activities of the Chinese, Persians, Greeks and Romans. (3)(11) In the Hebrew scriptures mention is made of the "Dung Gate". (10) This was undoubtedly a place given to the marketing of manures. That manure was used as a soil amendment in Asia Minor in Biblical times is not questioned. The famous Roman agricultural writer Cato (234 B.C.) wrote at length on manures and their handling. He …

An Analysis Of The Bank Credit Situation In South Dakota, Roy James Smith Jan 1934

An Analysis Of The Bank Credit Situation In South Dakota, Roy James Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was planned as a preliminary survey of the short time credit problems of South Dakota. Although considerable information had been gathered concerning long time credits, no investigation had been made in the short time credit field; consequently the study of short time credits was regarded merely as an extension of the previous field of study. An investigation in this field was expected to be valuable since the efficient operation of the farming business depends in many instances on ready access to a cheap supply of short time credit.

Reaction To Price Change By South Dakota Farmers, John Gordon Mcneely Jan 1934

Reaction To Price Change By South Dakota Farmers, John Gordon Mcneely

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

South Dakota is one of the newest of the important agricultural states. In 1900, many parts of South Dakota were still in the process of being settled. The increase in the amount of land in crops continued without interruption until the time of the World War. We then find a greater demand for farm products than ever before. Inspired by the double incentive of high prices and helping to win the war, South Dakota and United States agriculture had expanded to unprecedented levels by 1920.

Reliability And Adequacy Of South Dakota Farm Price Data, John Muehlbeier Jan 1933

Reliability And Adequacy Of South Dakota Farm Price Data, John Muehlbeier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The reliability and adequacy of South Dakota farm price data cannot be stated with any great degree of precision. The statistical measures of reliability in this analysis are based upon the conditions of simple sampling of which the conclusions cannot be stated in absolute terms but must be expressed in probability. The sampling as done by the Division of Crop and Livestock Estimates is known as weighted stratified sampling, a departure from simple sampling, but considered to result in greater representativeness. Recognizing the limitations of the measures in this study, certain conclusions can still be drawn concerning the reliability of …

Distribution Of Maine Potatoes, Byron Emerson Titcomb Jul 1932

Distribution Of Maine Potatoes, Byron Emerson Titcomb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Its average farm value for the years 1924 to 1928 was $417,225,000, being surpassed only by corn, cotton, hay, wheat, and oats1. No other vegetable crop is so widely grown and so regularly consumed for food as potatoes.

The potato sections of the United States may be classified as early, intermediate and late crop areas. The early crop is produced in the southern states extending north to Virginia. The intermediate crop is produced north of this region to Pennsylvania. Long Island is in …

Alfalfa Seed Production In Millard County, Utah As Related To Soil Type, George Whornham May 1932

Alfalfa Seed Production In Millard County, Utah As Related To Soil Type, George Whornham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa has a wide range of adaptability as a forage plant, but the areas in which it will produce seed successfully are extremely limited. These sections are confined almost exclusively to the arid or semi-arid regions of the world. In all other areas it is primarily a question of seasonal fitness. The extreme localization may be further emphasized by the fact that within the highest producing counties there are appreciable areas of land not suitable for seed production.

Farm Mortgage Experience Of Life Insurance Companies Lending In South Dakota, Harry Allan Steele Jan 1932

Farm Mortgage Experience Of Life Insurance Companies Lending In South Dakota, Harry Allan Steele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Life insurance funds play an important part in supplying farm mortgage credit. This source of credit has increased rapidly during the last twenty years and is now one of the principal sources of farm mortgage loans in the United States. Because of the nature of the institution of life insurance, its investments should be conservative. It is with this view in mind that the state insurance laws are designed to regulate the investments of the life insurance companies. Investments of the well established life insurance companies have generally been made on a conservative basis.

A Farm Organization And Management Study In Western Millard County, Utah, George Thomas Blanch

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to the cumulative effect of certain economic factors, the farmers of western Millard County, known as the Delta area, are in unfavorable economic conditions. Many of the farms are heavily mortgaged, taxes and interest in many cases are in arrears for several years, and in general, lack of prosperity in quite evident. The majority of the farm land in this area is within one of four drainage districts. These districts are known as drainage districts No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4. The cost and maintenance of these drainage systems is generally thought to be one of …

Influence Of Clipping On The Yield Of Forage In Certain Pastures At North Logan, Utah, Newel Washburn May 1931

Influence Of Clipping On The Yield Of Forage In Certain Pastures At North Logan, Utah, Newel Washburn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

"Pasture is the natural food of all domesticated herbivore, especially the ruminant, and the only single feed upon which it can be maintained in health indefinitely."

Pastures rank next to the alfalfa hay crop in total production of forage far livestock in Utah. For approximately five months each year pastures turnish the cheapest supply of feed available for dairy production. Their improvement and utilization to the best advantage as a source of valuable feed in Utah has been overshadowed by the abundance of alfalfa hay with its rich supply of minerals and high quality protein. There is a potentiality of …

Private Legislation Affecting Local Governments In Tennessee, Roger P. Matteson May 1931

Private Legislation Affecting Local Governments In Tennessee, Roger P. Matteson

Masters Theses

The legislature of Tennessee when in session spends much the greatest part of its time and energy in passing acts which are merely of local interest. The great majority of bills passed apply only to some particular county, district, city, or town. The important place that local acts occupy in legislative affairs of this state may be seen from proclamations of governors calling the legislature to convene in special sessions. Governor Roberts, in calling an extra session to meet August 9, 1920, explained the reason for making such a call in the following words: "for the purpose of taking action …

The Effect Of A Varying Moisture Supply At Different Periods Of Growth On The Development, Yield And Quality Of Flax, William K. Soule

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the flaxseed producing section of the United States consisting of the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota and Montana, periods of drought frequently occur during some part of the growing season. The time of occurrence varies from early spring to fall. Such periods have a profound effect on the normal growth of the plant.

A Study Of The Farm Shop Curriculum, Robert B. Fall Jan 1930

A Study Of The Farm Shop Curriculum, Robert B. Fall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The building of a course to teach the principles underlying mechanical operations on farms has been and still is under criticism, and probably will continue to be for some time to come; but it is such an important brench, or part, of farming that was thought that any contribution which could be made to assist in a better understanding of the problem would be worth while, hence this study.

Entomological Technique As Referring To The Life History Of Insects, Andrew Jefferson Wheeler May 1927

Entomological Technique As Referring To The Life History Of Insects, Andrew Jefferson Wheeler

Masters Theses

According to the statement of Kellogg in American Insects, man's real competitors are not the larger creatures that inhabit the Earth with us. These are relatively few in number and easily controlled; but the tiny creatures - the insects and insect-like creatures are the ones that present a real problem to us. They conquer us many times because they are so prolific and so numerous and because they are so small they often go unnoticed. Our Nation has realized the problem and has appropriated millions of dollars annually for the control of insects. This expenditure, however, is not sufficient and …

A Consideration Of Methods Of Securing Historical Price And Production Data And A Survey Of Their Relationship For South Dakota, Owen L. Dawson Jan 1927

A Consideration Of Methods Of Securing Historical Price And Production Data And A Survey Of Their Relationship For South Dakota, Owen L. Dawson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In our studies of prices we will analyze the present prices; discuss the use of price date now available and consider methods of collecting further data. As South Dakota is one of several states or countries producing a surplus of crops and livestock for market, production for the United States and for the world, of certain products, must be considered as affecting the farm prices in South Dakota.

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed May 1926

Correlation Studies In Wheat, Joseph Reed

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Most of our plant breeders however, have been too busy working on experiments with single characters and have given little or …

Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer May 1923

Effect Of Root-Rot Upon Sugar-Beet Seed Production, Louis F. Nuffer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to considerable loss through root-rot of mother beets while in storage during the winter of 1918-1919 the Amalgamated Sugar Company asked advice in regard to planting beets which had decay lesions on them. Would the beets yield seed if planted? How much seed would these beets yield as compared with healthy beets? Would the seed produced be injured by having been grown on decayed beets? It was felt that an experiment carried out with the above questions in view would bring out many facts upon which to base conclusions in answering the questions of the Sugar Company.

A Study Of The Effects Of An Excessive Ratio Of Lime To Magnesia Upon Plant Growth, John Ira Hardy May 1914

A Study Of The Effects Of An Excessive Ratio Of Lime To Magnesia Upon Plant Growth, John Ira Hardy

Masters Theses

[From the Introduction, Abbreviated]

For centuries the beneficial effects derived from the agricultural use of lime have been known, its use being common among the chinese long before the Christian era. Pliny, writing more than two thousand years ago, described the use of chalk by Roman farmers. In some parts of England and Western Europe lime has long been regarded as next to manure as a fertilizer. Although the use of lime in this country was recorded and recommended by Johnston, more than a hundred years ago, only during the more recent years has the subject of liming …

Apple Varieties In Maine, Frederick Charles Bradford Jun 1911

Apple Varieties In Maine, Frederick Charles Bradford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following pages represent an effort to trace the causes of the changing procession of varieties of apples grown in Maine. To this end the history of fruit growing in Maine has been carefully studied, largely through the Agricultural Reports from 1850 to 1909 and the columns of the Maine Farmer from 1838 to 1875. The inquiry has been confined as rigidly as possible to this state, outside sources being referred to only for sake of comparison. Rather incidentally, soil influences, modifications due to climate, etc., have been considered.

Naturally, since the inquiry was limited to printed record, nothing new …
