Organizational Change And The Participation Of Accounting Information Systems: A Critical Reflexive Ethnography Of The South Australian Housing Trust, Mary Aristidis Kaidonis Jan 1996

Organizational Change And The Participation Of Accounting Information Systems: A Critical Reflexive Ethnography Of The South Australian Housing Trust, Mary Aristidis Kaidonis

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This is a critical reflexive ethnography of the South Austrahan Housing Trust (SAHT) between 1991-1994. The SAHT was estabhshed as a statutory authority with dual roles, which were to provide affordable housing to low income earners and to do so in a manner which contributed to the state's overall social and economic welfare. These dual roles influenced the culture of the organization and act as a context in which to analyse and understand a number of events. The SAHT's internal predisposition to change helped it to respond to reduced government funding and a change in general managers by undergoing structural …

The Role Of Accounting In The Developing Economy Of The Kingdom Of Tonga, Sione Leimoni Taufu'i Jan 1996

The Role Of Accounting In The Developing Economy Of The Kingdom Of Tonga, Sione Leimoni Taufu'i

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The island Kingdom of Tonga has been facing a difficult problem in trying to achieve sustained economic growth through the formulation and implementation of development plans. Such development plans are dependent, among other things, upon the availability of relevant and reliable economic information. However, the availability of accounting information to help implement economic decisions have been widely criticised as deficient, irrelevant and often lacking credibility. This has been due to the absence of well-defined reporting practices and procedures whereby such requirements, whether statutory or legal are strictly followed and enforced.

Accounting and auditing practices are not formalised in Tonga nor …

The Structure Of Financial Control, Accountability And Accounting In The Islamic Republic Of Iran With An Examination Of The Relevance To Iran Of Recent Accounting Reforms In The Australian Government, Gholamhossein Mahdavi Jan 1996

The Structure Of Financial Control, Accountability And Accounting In The Islamic Republic Of Iran With An Examination Of The Relevance To Iran Of Recent Accounting Reforms In The Australian Government, Gholamhossein Mahdavi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Increased demands on governments, along with pressure from limited resources of most countries, including Britain, Australia and New Zealand, in recent decades have resulted in significant reforms to the management of public sector resources and to the mechanisms by which governments are held financially accountable. Commercialisation, corporatisation and privatisation in the public sector are part of this reform. Most of the reforms have yet to find their way to the Islamic Republic of Iran which has devoted most of its energies since the Revolution in 1979 to establishing structures of government.

These reforms, which have been guided by the principles …

Studies Of The Rubisco Oxygenase Reaction Using Mn2+-Dependent Luminescence, Sean Cox Jan 1996

Studies Of The Rubisco Oxygenase Reaction Using Mn2+-Dependent Luminescence, Sean Cox

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The plant carbon-fixing enzyme, ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) catalyses the reaction of CO2 with ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP). The overall reaction occurs as a sequence of events involving multiple transition states, providing opportunities for alternative reactions to occur. The most significant being the oxygenation of the RuBP-derived enediol. This side-reaction competes directly with carboxylation and reduces the efficiency of carbon fixation. The Mn2+-activated rubisco oxygenase reaction generates chemiluminescence which provides a new approach for investigating rubisco oxygenation.

The Evolutionary Consequences Of Direct Larval Development For The Intertidal Gastropod Bedeva Hanleyi, Miles Gregory Hoskin Jan 1996

The Evolutionary Consequences Of Direct Larval Development For The Intertidal Gastropod Bedeva Hanleyi, Miles Gregory Hoskin

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

For marine invertebrates which consist of non-contiguous local populations of sessile or sedentary adults, several studies have shown that omission of a planktonic larval stage leads to reduced gene flow and genetic divergence among local populations. However, data on their o w n provide little indication of the extent to which the overall genetic composition of local populations has been affected by genetic drift, site-specific natural selection or a combination of both forces. This study used genetic, ecological and experimental techniques to investigate the roles of gene flow, effective population size, genetic drift and site-specific selection in the evolution of …

Distribution Of Mechanical Energy Fractions During Maximal Ergometer Rowing, Richard M. Smith Jan 1996

Distribution Of Mechanical Energy Fractions During Maximal Ergometer Rowing, Richard M. Smith

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The assessment of mechanical energy expenditure (MEE) during human movement is an essential step in the determination of the proficiency of the movement. Dynamics methods of estimating MEE have their derivation in the sources of MEE , the joint forces and moments, and are less arbitrary about the rules governing energy compensation when compared with instantaneous segment energy methods. Further, dynamics methods enable the exercise scientist to attribute energy costs and savings to particular body segments, sources and mechanisms. This thesis describes the application of a dynamics method (Aleshinsky, 1986a-e) to the mechanical energy analysis of maximal ergometer rowing.

Development And Application Of Chiral Conducting Polymers, Mir Reza Majidi Jan 1996

Development And Application Of Chiral Conducting Polymers, Mir Reza Majidi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of optically active polyaniline its derivatives. The novel optically active emeraldine salts PAn.(+)-or (-)-HCSA and PAn.(-)-HCSA were prepared as dark green films via the enantioactive electropolymerization of aniline in the presence of (+)-or (-)-HCSA, respectively. The two films PAn.(+)- or (-)-HCSA and PAn.(-)-HCSA exhibited strong mirror imaged CD spectra. This was rationalised in terms of the polyaniline chain adopting a helical structure in which one screw-sense is preferentially maintained depending on which hand of the CSA- anion is incorporated.

The electrochemically synthesised chiral polyanilines were characterized using electrochemical techniques such as cyclic …

Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles Derived From Isoquinoline Alkaloids, I. Made Sudarma Jan 1996

Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles Derived From Isoquinoline Alkaloids, I. Made Sudarma

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Reactions of the isoquinoline alkaloids, aporphine, papaverine, pavine, and berberine have been studied . The main aim of the work was to explore a potential route to the new strained aza(l,9)phenanthrenophane derivatives 23a, 23b, and 24 using the readily-available aporphine alkaloid, boldine as a starting material.

A ring construction approach to the aza(1,9)phenanthrenophane derivative 23a via a photochemical reaction of phenanthrene chloroacetamide derivatives 28b or 28c was pursued (Chapter 2). Photolysis of 28b gave rise to the reduced aza(1,9)phenanthrenophane analogue 47 in low yield. In addition, a range of other novel heterocyclic products were obtained from the photolysis …

Analytical Modelling And Laboratory Studies Of Particle Transport In Filter Media, Fereydoon Vafai Jan 1996

Analytical Modelling And Laboratory Studies Of Particle Transport In Filter Media, Fereydoon Vafai

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study highlights an analytical model simulating the filtration phenomenon applicable to any base soil-filter system. Prior to development of such a model, different approaches in filter design criteria are reviewed, and their advantages and disadvantages are critically discussed. The mechanics of filtration are investigated both analytically and experimentally to achieve a better understanding of the behaviour of particle migration within the filter medium, and highlight the influencing parameters affecting the filtration process. The evaluation of pore size and coefficient of permeability of the filter are studied, and a new relationship is established to determine the coefficient of permeability based …

Deterministic Analysis And Simulation Of Runoff In Urban Catchments, Rouzbehani Abdolmohammad Ghafouri Jan 1996

Deterministic Analysis And Simulation Of Runoff In Urban Catchments, Rouzbehani Abdolmohammad Ghafouri

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Among many consequences of urbanisation, frequent flooding is outstanding as the most common problem resulting from land use change. To discharge surface runoff from cities the Rational method was introduced as one of the first formulas to design drainage pipes/waterways. In the beginning the formula was applied as a deterministic model according to the few available records of rainfall events, however later when recorded data was more commonly available the application changed to a statistical method. After more than a century from the introduction of the Rational method by Mulvaney, this formula still is the centre of attention among practitioners. …

Water Quality Modelling Of River Systems, S. H. Musavi-Jahromi Jan 1996

Water Quality Modelling Of River Systems, S. H. Musavi-Jahromi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Environmental pollution, including river pollution, has been keeping pace with industrial development. It has become one of the most important world - wide problem, and is one of the key factors by which economic development and the conservation of natural resources can be constrained.

Rivers play important role not only for humans, but also for the aquatic organisms both flora and fauna. They play a significant role in local community activities. They are used for water supply, irrigation, recreation, sand mining, and the disposal of industrial and domestic wastewater. These uses of river systems raise concern about river management and …

An Analysis Of The Determinants Of Investment In Developing Countries A Case Study Of Iran (1970-93), Ahmad Ghassemi Jan 1996

An Analysis Of The Determinants Of Investment In Developing Countries A Case Study Of Iran (1970-93), Ahmad Ghassemi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study attempts to identify the major determinants of private investment , along with the effects of such investments on other macroeconomic factors, in developing countries, using Iran as a case study. In this regard we identify a number of macroeconomic variables which played a major role in enhancing private investment in developing countries, and Iran in particular, between 1970 and 1993. An empirical investment model, a simultaneous investment model by industry and a macroeconomic model are applied to study the investment behaviour in this country. Lack of economic data, differences in economic structure, and different economic concepts between developed …

Econometric Modelling Of Import Demand In Developing Countries: The Case Of Iran (1970-1993), Seyed Komail Tayyebi Jan 1996

Econometric Modelling Of Import Demand In Developing Countries: The Case Of Iran (1970-1993), Seyed Komail Tayyebi

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The linkage between changes in economic variables, such as relative prices, exchange rates, and income, and import demand has many implications. The major objective of this thesis is to develop and estimate an econometric model explaining such a relationship for a developing country. The thesis contributes significantly to analytical and empirical work on the Iranian economy. It focuses on the behavior of Iranian import demand through estimation of linear econometric models.

Imports are considered at both aggregate and disaggregate levels. The behavior of the

Iranian aggregate import demand function is considered within the framework of a macroeconomic model, identifying applicable …

The Role Of Oil Exports In The Economic Development Of Iran 1960-1992, Mahmood Haerian Ardakani Jan 1996

The Role Of Oil Exports In The Economic Development Of Iran 1960-1992, Mahmood Haerian Ardakani

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the impact of oil exports on the process of the economic growth in Iran during the period 1960-1992. The study uses single and simultaneous equation regression models to test export-led-growth models in the context of the Iranian economy.

The results would seem to suggest that the Iranian economy has been financed with large amounts of oil revenues in the past three decades, especially after the jump in oil prices in 1973. However, the regression analysis suggests that the Iranian economy did not gain as much from these price rises as the …

Trade Linkages And Economic Growth In China, Xihua Wu Jan 1996

Trade Linkages And Economic Growth In China, Xihua Wu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The recent resurgent interest in the process of economic growth among academic economists has been characterised by an endeavour to invoke knowledge and human capital as determinants of long-run economic growth and, thereby, empirically explain the divergent pattems of rates of economic growth observed across countries and regions. This approach is distmctive from the conventional growth paradigm, which in contrast, concentrates mainly on the growth of physical inputs as the sources of growth. The new approach, by endogenising technical change, has created a framework in which to explain why economic institutions and policies can have long-run effects on growth rates. …

Continuity In Interorganisational Cooperation: A Study Of Alliances Within Regional Networks, Mary G. Harris

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Continuity in interorganisational cooperation was the focus of this thesis. The research aimed to contribute to interorganisational theory and practice with respect to the governance of informal business alliances. The question addressed the extent to which alliances are maintained by organisational interdependence, satisfaction with the exchange relation and compliance with 'norms of practice'. A multi-theoretical framework was developed for analysis of generalist-specialist alliances in the health industry and a study research design was employed involving the collection of quantitative and qualitative data from four networks. A randomised survey of generalists within two urban networks identified alliances and explored issues in …

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

This study reviews the international position on the transition process of a competent technical professional competent manager within the manufacturing industry and then evaluates the Australian experience. New models are presented as a result of this work defining organisational, academic, and individual roles and responsibilities throughout that transition process.

In contrast to much of the published literature the occupational motivation, career orientation, and personal characteristics and beliefs of both technical and non-technical respondents in this research group were not substantially different, and the population could be considered a single group in those regards. Role transition within this group was believed …

Adhesive Bonding Of Coated Steels, Prosenjit Basu Jan 1996

Adhesive Bonding Of Coated Steels, Prosenjit Basu

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

A lack of knowledge about the strengths of adhesively bonded metallic and organic coated sheet steel has been hindering proper application of these metallic materials for practical purpose in Australia. To address this problem, first an extensive database on the initial joint strengths were compiled. Lap shear test and Width Tapered Cantilever Beam test geometries were employed for evaluating the average stress at failure and the fracture energy of adhesive joints respectively. By observing the mechanism of failure and the data on joint strengths, reasons explaining why some adhesives formed a stronger joint than the others were determined. Extensive surface …

Microstructural Characterisation Of Nitrogen Implanted And Plasma Nitrided Austenitic Stainless Steel, Xinyang Li Jan 1996

Microstructural Characterisation Of Nitrogen Implanted And Plasma Nitrided Austenitic Stainless Steel, Xinyang Li

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In the present work, the cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) , traditional selected area diffraction (SAD), nanobeam electron diffraction (NBD) , high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and glancing angle X-ray diffraction (GAXD ) have been used to investigate the surface microstructure of AISI 316 austenitic stainless steel after plasma immersion ion implantation (PI3) and plasma nitriding.

It has been established that GAXD is incapable of unambiguous characterisation of the microstructure of nitrogen implanted and nitrided austenitic stainless steel. Further, it has been demonstrated that sole reliance on GAXD could, at best, provide a very complicated and confusing picture …

Transformation Characteristics And Structure-Property Relationships For A Copper Bearing Hsla Steel, Seyed Sadegh Ghasemi Banadkouki

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Two aspects of mechanical property improvement in a modern low carbon copper bearing high strength low alloy (HSLA) steel have been investigated. These aspects are precipitation hardening by fine copper rich particles and, secondly, the production of fine packets of bainitic and martensitic structures with retained austenite films.

The investigation involved a detailed study of the isothermal and continuous cooling transformation characteristics and microstructural evolution in commercially hot rolled samples of CR HSLA80 steel, which is a low carbon low alloy variant of the ASTM A710 type structural steel. The TIT- and CCTdiagrams were constructed by a combination of dilatometry …

Difference Subspaces On Locally Compact Groups, Wai-Lok Lo Jan 1996

Difference Subspaces On Locally Compact Groups, Wai-Lok Lo

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

be a locally compact group. A difference subspace of LP(G)(1 ≤ p ≤ oo) is a vector subspace of LP(G) generated by a set of vectors of the form ƒ-μ*ƒ, where ƒ is in LP(G), μ is in some prescribed set of measures on G, and * is convolution in the usual sense.

The main aim of this thesis is to present some characterisations of difference subspaces on locally compact Abelian groups. The thesis contains a generalisation of the result, obtained by B. E. Johnson, which characterised a certain type of difference subspace of …

Solving Linear And Nonlinear Transient Diffusion Problems With The Laplace Transform Dual Reciprocity Method, Pornchai Satravaha Jan 1996

Solving Linear And Nonlinear Transient Diffusion Problems With The Laplace Transform Dual Reciprocity Method, Pornchai Satravaha

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

In this thesis, a new numerical method, with the Laplace Transform and the Dual Reciprocity Method (DRM) combined into the so called Laplace Transform Dual Reciprocity Method (LTDRM), is proposed and applied to solve linear and nonlinear transient diffusion problems. The method comprises of three crucial steps. Firstly, the Laplace transform is applied to the partial differential equation and boundary conditions in a given differential system. Secondly, the dual reciprocity method is employed to solve the transformed differential system. Thirdly, a numerical inversion is utilised to retrieve the solution in the time domain.

The LTDRM is first applied for the …

Astrophysical Gas Dynamics Of Structure Formation, Peter J. Maguire Jan 1996

Astrophysical Gas Dynamics Of Structure Formation, Peter J. Maguire

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

Several problems concerning the behaviour of gas during structure formation in the Universe are investigated. The beta problem concerns the relative distributions of gas and gravitating matter in clusters of galaxies. One-dimensional self-similar simulations of cluster collapse are used to investigate whether the different colhsional properties of the gas and gravitating matter in clusters can significantly affect their relative distributions. These models can produce beta values similar to those observed. Data for the beta problem are considered next. Beta is found to correlate with cluster temperature. This trend can be explained by a fixed specific energy excess in the gas, …

The Effect Of Colour On Transient System Activity, As Indexed Four Different Psychophysical Measures, Kristen Pammer Jan 1996

The Effect Of Colour On Transient System Activity, As Indexed Four Different Psychophysical Measures, Kristen Pammer

University of Wollongong Thesis Collection 1954-2016

The strongest differentiation between the transient (magnocellular) and sustained (parvocellular) visual pathways, is in terms of colour processing, with the transient system generally considered to be colour insensitive. This distinction is obvious in both the anatomy and physiology of the visual system (e.g., Wiesel & Hubel 1966; Gouras 1968; De Valois, Abramov & Jacobs 1966; Schiller & Malpeli 1977). Both physiological (e.g., Wiesel & Hubel 1966; Derrington, Krauskopf & Lennie 1984) and psychophysical evidence (e.g., Williams, Breitmeyer, Lovegrove & Gutierrez 1991) has suggested that transient cells may be suppressed by diffuse red light. The possible effect of blue light is, …
