Systematic Conservation Planning For Antarctic Research Stations, Shaun T. Brooks, Julia Jabour, Kevin A. Hughes, Fraser Morgan, Peter Convey, Elias T. Polymeropoulos, Dana M. Bergstrom

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

The small ice-free areas of Antarctica are essential locations for both biodiversity and scientific research but are subject to considerable and expanding human impacts, resulting primarily from station-based research and support activities, and local tourism. Awareness by operators of the need to conserve natural values in and around station and visitor site footprints exists, but the cumulative nature of impacts often results in reactive rather than proactive management. With human activity spread across many isolated pockets of ice-free ground, the pathway to the greatest reduction of human impacts within this natural reserve is through better management of these areas, which …

This Assessment Update by the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) considers the interactive effects of solar UV radiation, global warming, and other weathering factors on plastics. The Assessment illustrates the significance of solar UV radiation in decreasing the durability of plastic materials, degradation of plastic debris, formation of micro- and nanoplastic particles and accompanying leaching of potential toxic compounds. Micro- and nanoplastics have been found in all ecosystems, the atmosphere, and in humans. While the potential biological risks are not yet well-established, the widespread and increasing occurrence of plastic pollution is reason for …

A Heatwave In Antarctica Totally Blew The Minds Of Scientists. They Set Out To Decipher It – And Here Are The Results, Dana M. Bergstrom Jan 2024

A Heatwave In Antarctica Totally Blew The Minds Of Scientists. They Set Out To Decipher It – And Here Are The Results, Dana M. Bergstrom

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

Climate scientists don’t like surprises. It means our deep understanding of how the climate works isn’t quite as complete as we need. But unfortunately, as climate change worsens, surprises and unprecedented events keep happening.

In March 2022, Antarctica experienced an extraordinary heatwave. Large swathes of East Antarctica experienced temperatures up to 40°C (72°F) above normal, shattering temperature records. It was the most intense heatwave ever recorded anywhere in the world.

So shocking and rare was the event, it blew the minds of the Antarctic climate science community. A major global research project was launched to unravel the reasons behind it …

Drafting, Revision And An Author’S Duty Of Care––My Novel ‘Housework Of Desire’ And The Near-Destruction Of A Thirty-Year Friendship, Shady Cosgrove Jan 2024

Drafting, Revision And An Author’S Duty Of Care––My Novel ‘Housework Of Desire’ And The Near-Destruction Of A Thirty-Year Friendship, Shady Cosgrove

Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities - Papers

In a speech at the Art Gallery of NSW, Australian writer Charlotte Wood spoke about the process of drafting her award-winning novel The Natural Way of Things. She stated:

To free myself from the sometimes-paralysing fear of uncertainty, I’ve learned a few mental tricks. One of these is to conceive of my story in progress as a kind of performance that I am only there to watch take place, rather than to control. And in my mind’s eye, the unfolding performance of my novel has always taken place in the hushed dark of a richly textured circus tent… (2018). …

A Threefold Method For Studying Self-Pattern Dynamics, Shaun Gallagher Jan 2024

A Threefold Method For Studying Self-Pattern Dynamics, Shaun Gallagher

Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities - Papers

This chapter focuses on several factors of the self-pattern for purposes of exploring in more detail how those factors are dynamically related, and how they may be affected in various disorders. The chapter outlines a threefold method that allows for an increasingly detailed analysis of how these relations are typically ordered and sometimes differently ordered. Rather than defining relations a priori, the method is empirical. It borrows tools developed in several other areas of research, including, (1) from performance studies, the model of a meshed architecture, (2) the notion of interventionist causality, and (3) dynamical systems analysis, specifically a coordination …

In The 'Display Case': (Capitalist) Realism And Simon Stone's 'Zoological' Ibsen, Margaret M. Hamilton Oct 2023

In The 'Display Case': (Capitalist) Realism And Simon Stone's 'Zoological' Ibsen, Margaret M. Hamilton

Scopus Harvesting Series

How are theatre practitioners (re)defining the realist project, a form of theatre intrinsic to the ideological domestication of capitalism? This paper takes up this question through an examination of Simon Stone's production of The Wild Duck 'after Ibsen', staged at Belvoir Theatre in Sydney in 2011, and the late Mark Fisher's (2009) theorization of a market-dominated present as capitalist realism. In doing so, it refers to three different cultural contexts by making parallels to the German theatre director Thomas Ostermeier's work and pointing to developments in Britain. It argues that performances dependent upon the subject's capacity to know and represent …

Embodiment As A Pedagogical Tool To Enhance Learning, Myrto F. Mavilidi, Kim Ouwehand, Mirko Schmidt, Catarina Pesce, Phillip D. Tomporowski, Anthony D. Okely, Fred Paas

Faculty of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities - Papers

This chapter focuses on practical implications of embodiment to facilitate learning in educational contexts. Starting from a brief historical overview of the scientific debate of action-perception that forms the genesis of embodiment, the chapter progresses to later influential theories. Contemporary trends are discussed in light of theories of embodied cognition, emphasising the importance of body movements in shaping higher-order cognitive processing and how embodied cognitive neuroscience links the brain, the body, and the broader environment. In reviewing the literature, empirical studies with movements are explored in relation to their type of embodiment (e.g., gestures, simulation, whole-body movements, physical activity), educational …

3d Rock Failure Modelling Of Pillar Behaviour During Longwall Retreat Into Normal And Angled Design Gas Drainage Stubs, Gaetano Venticinque Jan 2023

3d Rock Failure Modelling Of Pillar Behaviour During Longwall Retreat Into Normal And Angled Design Gas Drainage Stubs, Gaetano Venticinque

Resource Operators Conference

3D Rock failure modelling was used to perform a coal pillar stability analysis comparing normal and angled Gas Drainage Stub (GDS) design during the approach of a longwall. This paper aims to benchmark the response behaviour of rectangle and triangle shape fender pillars respectively formed during longwall retreat into normal and angled GDS designs. The results of this study are intended to provide a general hazard awareness of potential layout/support issues relevant to GDS design rather than providing a unique recommendation or overall mining solution.

Using FLAC3D, computer modelling of the rock failure process simulated pillar loading and pillar failure …

Brittle-Ductile Transition In Coal Pillar Failures, Xiaohan Yang, Mehdi Serati, Paul Buddery Jan 2023

Brittle-Ductile Transition In Coal Pillar Failures, Xiaohan Yang, Mehdi Serati, Paul Buddery

Resource Operators Conference

Factor of Safety (FoS) is the most widely used empirical criterion in coal pillar design. The increased vertical stresses associated with deep mining are resulting in pillar sizes much larger than those used in the development of the empirical strength formula. It is not uncommon to see pillars with over 50 m solid widths based on the established design criteria, which reduces overall reserve recovery and development productivity. Previous research revealed that pillars will transform from brittle to ductile failure with strain-hardening behaviour when their w/h ratio exceeds a certain critical value. However, the actual failure mechanics of pillars with …

An Approach To Solve Underground Coal Mine Logistics Strain, David Walker, Ernest Baafi, Senevi Kiridena Jan 2023

An Approach To Solve Underground Coal Mine Logistics Strain, David Walker, Ernest Baafi, Senevi Kiridena

Resource Operators Conference

There is currently no mechanism for mine management and strategic planners to identify potential future logistical supply chain bottlenecks within a mine plan and address them proactively. By identifying any logistics constraints as early as possible, the best opportunity to rectify the problem at the least expense is realised. The paper discusses a novel approach which has been developed to strategically identify logistics bottlenecks and the impacts that mine planning parameters might have on these at any point in time throughout a life of mine plan. The developed system was applied to a real-world Australian mine with actual logistics tracking …

A Structural Engineering Approach To Longwall Rock Mechanics In Massive Strata, Ian Gray, Tim Gibbons Jan 2023

A Structural Engineering Approach To Longwall Rock Mechanics In Massive Strata, Ian Gray, Tim Gibbons

Resource Operators Conference

Geotechnically massive strata behave as strong units, rather than the geologically massive description which describes the sedimentary formation. The consequence of such geotechnically massive units to mining is a series of problems associated with these units failing to break up into small blocks.

This paper deals with the determination of what constitutes geotechnically massive strata. This is essentially a function of the geology and the mechanical properties of the geological stratigraphic units that need to be combined into geotechnical units. The mechanical properties depend on the rock itself and on the structure in the form of joints and faults. The …

Reduction Of Fugitive Methane Emissions From Open Cut Coal Mines, Frank Hungerford Jan 2023

Reduction Of Fugitive Methane Emissions From Open Cut Coal Mines, Frank Hungerford

Resource Operators Conference

Fugitive coal seam gas emissions from open cut coal mines occur when coal and surrounding strata is exposed and fractured as part of the mining process. This liberates the seam gas confined within the coal seams and is a large contributor to the mining industries greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint. Gas reservoir assessment is required to determine the in situ gas content and composition of the coal seams and carbonaceous strata and to define gas zones likely to be targeted in gas reduction drilling. This paper describes the drilling methods and pre-drainage practices and applications available at access and capture seam …

Energy Sources Of Rock Burst And The Influence Of The Surrounding Rock Mass, Charlie C. Li Jan 2023

Energy Sources Of Rock Burst And The Influence Of The Surrounding Rock Mass, Charlie C. Li

Resource Operators Conference

The kinetic energy for rock ejection in a rock burst event is converted from the strain energy stored in the burst rock, a portion of strain energy released from the surrounding rock mass and a portion of seismic energy transferred from fault-slip seismicity. The kinetic energy is mainly contributed by the burst rock itself in a small-scale strain burst, but the energy released from the surrounding rock mass plays a major role in a large-scale rock burst. Intergranular and extensional cracking is dominating in burst-prone rocks, while in the non-burst-prone rocks the dominating cracking is intragranular and shear. Both the …

Outburst Control In The Wongawilli Seam, Dennis Black Jan 2023

Outburst Control In The Wongawilli Seam, Dennis Black

Resource Operators Conference

The Wongawilli coal seam varies from 8 m to 10 m thick and consists of interbedded bands of kaolinitic brown mudstone and coal plies. In the southern part of the coalfield, the lower section of the seam is higher quality and lower ash. Dendrobium mines the bottom 3.5 m to 4.0 m of the seam, producing hard coking coal for use in steelmaking.

Effects Of Rib Distances On Axial Load Transfer Mechanisms Of Fully Grouted Rock Bolts, Amin Motallebiyan, Hadi Nourizadeh, Behshad Jodeiri Shokri, Shima Entezam, Ali Mirzaghorbanali, Naj Aziz, Kevin Mcdougall Jan 2023

Effects Of Rib Distances On Axial Load Transfer Mechanisms Of Fully Grouted Rock Bolts, Amin Motallebiyan, Hadi Nourizadeh, Behshad Jodeiri Shokri, Shima Entezam, Ali Mirzaghorbanali, Naj Aziz, Kevin Mcdougall

Resource Operators Conference

Rock bolt systems are widely used for the reinforcement of underground coal mines after excavation. These systems consist of steel bolts installed in drill holes and encapsulated by resin or grout. The spacing between the rock bolt ribs is one of the factors affecting the axial load transfer mechanisms. Steel rebar with a 16 mm diameter, Stratabinder HS grout, and steel pipes with a diameter of 50 mm were used to simulate the rock bolt system. The distance between the ribs on the rebar was doubled for half of the samples to investigate the effects of rib spacing on the …

Application Of Numerical Modeling In Study Of The Behaviour Of Cable Bolts Under Axial Loading, Sina Anzanpour, Naj Aziz, Ameen Topa, Jan Nemcik, Ali Mirzaghorbanali Jan 2023

Application Of Numerical Modeling In Study Of The Behaviour Of Cable Bolts Under Axial Loading, Sina Anzanpour, Naj Aziz, Ameen Topa, Jan Nemcik, Ali Mirzaghorbanali

Resource Operators Conference

Over the past few decades, the rapid development of efficient mathematical algorithms and the increasing availability of powerful computers have made it possible to develop realistic constitutive models. With the development of highly sophisticated constitutive models, the Finite Element Method (FEM) has become an invaluable tool for predicting ultimate loads and the associated failure mechanisms. Consequently, more capable and realistic models can be developed to analyze and design various types of structures. This paper concentrates on the application of FEM model for better understanding of the behaviour of cable bolts under axial loading conditions. A detailed geometry of the pullout …

Slope Stability Prediction Using The Artificial Neural Network (Ann), Al Muhalab Al-Dughaishi, Shivakumar Karekal, Fok Hing Chi Tivive Jan 2023

Slope Stability Prediction Using The Artificial Neural Network (Ann), Al Muhalab Al-Dughaishi, Shivakumar Karekal, Fok Hing Chi Tivive

Resource Operators Conference

Slope failure is a significant risk in both civil and mining operations. This failure phenomenon is more likely to occur during the high rainfall season, areas with a high probability of seismic activity and in cold countries due to freezing-thawing. Further, a poor understanding of hydrogeology and geotechnical factors can contribute to erroneous engineering designs. Several Limit Equilibrium Methods (LEMs) and numerical modelling tools have been developed over the years. However, the highlighted success of the Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in other disciplines/sectors has motivated researchers to implement ANNs to forecast the Factor Of Safety (FOS). This paper aims to …

Investigation Of The Effect Of Using Fly Ash In The Grout Mixture On Performing The Fully Grouted Rock Bolt Systems, Shima Entezam, Behshad Jodeiri Shokri, Hadi Nourizadeh, Amin Motallebiyan, Ali Mirzaghorbanali, Kevin Mcdougall, Naj Aziz, Karu Karunasena Jan 2023

Investigation Of The Effect Of Using Fly Ash In The Grout Mixture On Performing The Fully Grouted Rock Bolt Systems, Shima Entezam, Behshad Jodeiri Shokri, Hadi Nourizadeh, Amin Motallebiyan, Ali Mirzaghorbanali, Kevin Mcdougall, Naj Aziz, Karu Karunasena

This paper attempts to reveal the influence of using fly ash in the grout on the axial bearing capacity of fully grouted rock bolts. For this purpose, different fly ash contents, including 1% and 2%, have been applied with Stratabinder HS with a water-to-grout ratio of 30%. Also, after preparing and curing the required samples, the UCS tests were conducted to determine the influence of fly ash on the grout strength. Along with the UCS tests, several pull-out tests were examined by preparing and curing rock bolt samples with steel reinforcement rebars of 16 mm and steel pipes with a …

Microstructural Characterisation And Mechanical Evaluation Of Ti-15mo Manufactured By Laser Metal Deposition, Edohamen Awannegbe, Huijun Li, Tingting Song, Frank Niessen, Ma Qian, Azdiar A. Gazder, Mitchell John Bromley Nancarrow, Elena V. Pereloma

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A bidirectional powder deposition strategy was employed to additively manufacture Ti-15Mo wt% using laser metal deposition. Phase identification, elemental analysis and microstructural characterisation were conducted after fabrication and uniaxial tensile testing using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy along the different processing directions. In addition, electron backscattering diffraction and transmission electron microscopy were used to analyse deformation mechanisms. It was found that three distinct zones, namely the fusion, remelted and heat affected zones, evolved in all 25 deposited layers which predominantly comprised coarse columnar grains. Mo segregation was pronounced in the as-built microstructure. Deformation accommodation in β matrix was by …
