A Decentralized Latency-Aware Task Allocation And Group Formation Approach With Fault Tolerance For Iot Applications, Muhammad Mudassar, Yanlong Zhai, Lejian Liao, Jun Shen Jan 2020

A Decentralized Latency-Aware Task Allocation And Group Formation Approach With Fault Tolerance For Iot Applications, Muhammad Mudassar, Yanlong Zhai, Lejian Liao, Jun Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Development of internet of things (IoT) and smart devices eased life by offering numerous applications targeting to provide real-time low latency services, but they also brought challenges in handling huge data generated from the powerful computations, to get a job done. Decentralized edge computing could help to achieve latency requirements of the applications by executing them closer to the user at edge of network, but most of the current studies actually deployed centralized approaches for cluster computing at edge, which put extra overhead of cluster formation and management. In this article, we propose to group heterogeneous edge nodes on task …

A New Approach To Keep The Privacy Information Of The Signer In A Digital Signature Scheme, Dung Hoang Duong, Willy Susilo, Viet Cuong Trinh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In modern applications, such as Electronic Voting, e-Health, e-Cash, there is a need that the validity of a signature should be verified by only one responsible person. This is opposite to the traditional digital signature scheme where anybody can verify a signature. There have been several solutions for this problem, the first one is we combine a signature scheme with an encryption scheme; the second one is to use the group signature; and the last one is to use the strong designated verifier signature scheme with the undeniable property. In this paper, we extend the traditional digital signature scheme to …

The Role Of Particle Shape On The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Granular Soils Captured Through Kozeny-Carman Approach, Thanh Trung Nguyen, Buddhima Indraratna Jan 2020

The Role Of Particle Shape On The Hydraulic Conductivity Of Granular Soils Captured Through Kozeny-Carman Approach, Thanh Trung Nguyen, Buddhima Indraratna

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Previous studies indicate that particle shape plays an important role in the hydraulic conductivity (k) of granular materials, often represented through the Kozeny-Carman (KC) concept. Several recent studies have improved the accuracy of the KC approach using the particle size distribution (PSD) to estimate the specific surface area of particles but overly simplifying the effect of particle shape. This current study innovatively adopts the Micro-Computed Tomography (CT) technique to compute particle shape parameters of different granular materials (e.g., glass beads, sand and crushed gravel) and then incorporate these parameters into the KC equation to estimate k more accurately, which is …

Pricing Of Barrier Options On Underlying Assets With Jump-Diffusion Dynamics: A Mellin Transform Approach, Marianito R. Rodrigo Jan 2020

Pricing Of Barrier Options On Underlying Assets With Jump-Diffusion Dynamics: A Mellin Transform Approach, Marianito R. Rodrigo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A barrier option is an exotic path-dependent option contract where the right to buy or sell is activated or extinguished when the underlying asset reaches a certain barrier price during the lifetime of the contract. In this article we use a Mellin transform approach to derive exact pricing formulas for barrier options with general payoffs and exponential barriers on underlying assets that have jump-diffusion dynamics. With the same approach we also price barrier options on underlying futures contracts.

Robust Extended H∞ Control Strategy Using Linear Matrix Inequality Approach For Islanded Microgrid, Maniza Armin, Mizanur Rahman, Md Mukidur Rahman, Subrata K. Sarker, Sajal Das, Md Rabiul Islam, Abbas Z. Kouzani, M. A Parvez Mahmud

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

This paper presents the design of an extended parameterisations of H∞ controller for off grid operation of a microgrid. The microgrid consists of distributed generation units, filters and local loads. The filters are used to achieve accurate sinusoidal output voltage. However, loads which are connected to the microgrid are parametrically uncertain. Hence, it undergoes with unknown loads uncertainties. These unknown loads may create unknown loads harmonics, non-linearities which may reduce the voltage and current profile of the microgrid. As a result, the sudden rise and fall of voltage current profile damages the domestic and commercial loads. The proposed controller provides …

On Masking And Releasing Smart Meter Data At Micro-Level: The Multiplicative Noise Approach, John Brackenbury, P. Y. O'Shaughnessy, Yan-Xia Lin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Smart meter electricity data presents privacy risks when malicious agents gain insights of private information, including residents’ lifestyle and daily habits. When allowing access to record-level data, we apply the multiplicative noise method to mask individual smart meter data, which simultaneously aims to minimise disclosure of a dwelling’s consumption signal to any third party and to enable accurate estimation of the sum of a cluster of households. Three testing criteria are introduced to measure the performance of multiplicative noise masking approach relevant to the smart meter data. We propose a novel ‘Twin Uniform’ noise distribution and derive relevant theoretical results. …

Proposing A Haptic Approach To Facilitating L2 Learners' Pragmatic Competence, Michael S. Burri, Amanda Ann Baker, William Acton Jan 2019

Proposing A Haptic Approach To Facilitating L2 Learners' Pragmatic Competence, Michael S. Burri, Amanda Ann Baker, William Acton

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Pragmatic competence plays a critical role in successful communication. Pragmatics in the second language classroom has received substantial interest in TESOL, yet teachers often find the teaching of pragmatics challenging. Instruction generally tends to focus on grammar and vocabulary development, even though pragmatics is closely linked to the sound system (i.e., phonology) of the language. An effective method should combine attention to both pragmatic and phonological competence. We propose an integrated approach, drawing on haptic (movement and touch) pronunciation teaching techniques (Acton, Baker, Burri & Teaman, 2013) to facilitate study and uptake of pragmatics in the classroom. In part by …

Building Conceptual Knowledge Of Fraction Operations Among Pre-Service Teachers: Effect Of A Representation-Based Teaching Approach Within A Teacher Education Program, Elise J. Thurtell, Patricia A. Forrester, Mohan Chinnappan

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

A deep understanding of fraction concepts and operations is necessary if pre-service teachers (PSTs) are to present the concepts in multiple forms to learners. Such an understanding needs to be grounded in rich conceptual knowledge. In the present study, we explore the development of this understanding by supporting a cohort of 103 PSTs, who had previously demonstrated poor conceptual understanding of fraction concepts and operations, with a Representational Reasoning in Teaching and Learning (RRTL) approach aimed at strengthening their conceptual knowledge. A comparison of pre- and post-test results indicated that participants showed a significant improvement in shifting the balance of …

Towards An Assessment Framework Of Reuse: A Knowledge Level Analysis Approach, Ghassan Beydoun, Achim Hoffmann, Rafael Valencia-Garcia, Jun Shen, Asifqumer Gill

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The process of assessing the suitability of reuse of a software component is complex. Indeed, software systems are typically developed as an assembly of existing components. The complexity of the assessment process is due to lack of clarity on how to compare the cost of adaptation of an existing component versus the cost of developing it from scratch. Indeed, often pursuit of reuse can lead to excessive rework and adaptation, or developing suites of components that often get neglected. This paper is an important step towards modelling the complex reuse assessment process. To assess the success factors that can underpin …

Questioning Segregation Of People Living With Dementia In Australia: An International Human Rights Approach To Care Homes, Linda Roslyn Steele, Kate Swaffer, Lyn Phillipson, Richard Fleming

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

This article explores how care homes-and, specifically, their common features such as dementia care units and locked doors and gates-impact on the human rights of people living with dementia. We suggest that congregation, separation and confinement of people living with dementia by the care home built environment constitute 'segregation'. In the specific context of residential aged care facilities in Australia, we draw on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ('CRPD') to frame this segregation as an injustice. We focus on the rights to non-discrimination (Article 5), liberty and security of the person (Article 14), equality …

Rotating The Medical Supplies For Emergency Response: A Simulation Based Approach, Quan Zhou, Tava Lennon Olsen Jan 2018

Rotating The Medical Supplies For Emergency Response: A Simulation Based Approach, Quan Zhou, Tava Lennon Olsen

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Serious expiration problems exist in national medical reserves prepared for emergency response. One alternative to reduce expiration is to rotate the reserve to hospitals so products can be used for day to day operations. Yet, rotation incurs extra handling costs and needs to be combined with hospitals' ordering decisions. This decision process is complex and involves various sources of uncertainty. In this paper, we use discrete-event simulation to model the rotation of the reserve in combination with the hospitals’ inventory management, and combine it with optimization to search for the optimal rotation policy. With simulation experiments, we evaluate the performance …

Connecting And Collaborating Across Oceania And Its Diaspora: A Shared Approach To Meaningful Development And Engagement, Jioji Ravulo Jan 2018

Connecting And Collaborating Across Oceania And Its Diaspora: A Shared Approach To Meaningful Development And Engagement, Jioji Ravulo

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Through this short, critical piece, I, as someone who comes from an Indigenous Pacific heritage, aim to challenge the way in which mainstream society positions societal problems as siloed, isolated from a structural, collective understanding of societal problems generally evident in Indigenous epistemologies. I suggest that by using an anti-oppressive social work practice approach where power imbalances are examined and understood within a wider context, we, as a Pacific community, are better equipped to create strategies and solutions that are inclusive of those traditionally not included in the conversation for change. We need to promote the importance of creating a …

The Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience (AIME) is a national, extra-curricular mentoring programme that is closing the educational gap for young Indigenous Australians. So what is AIME doing that is working so well? This article draws on a large-scale classroom ethnography to describe the pedagogies that facilitate the teacher-student relationships in this programme. We use Shawn Wilson's theorisation of Indigenous ways of knowing in order to 'unpack' how these approaches succeeded in creating the egalitarian and trust-filled relationships reportedly experienced in the AIME programme.

An Adaptive Agent-Based Approach To Traffic Simulation, Johan Barthelemy, Timoteo Carletti Jan 2017

An Adaptive Agent-Based Approach To Traffic Simulation, Johan Barthelemy, Timoteo Carletti

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

The aim of this work is to present the initial exploration of a behavioural Dynamic Traffic Assignment model, particularly suitable to be used and implemented in agent-based micro-simulations. The proposal relies on the assumption that travellers take routing policies rather than paths, leading us to introduce the possibility for each simulated agent to apply, in real time, a strategy allowing him to possibly re-route his path depending on the perceived local traffic conditions, jam and/or time spent. The re-routing process allows the agents to directly react to any change in the road network. For the sake of simplicity, the agents' …

A Decomposition Approach Via Fourier Sine Transform For Valuing American Knock-Out Options With Rebates, Nhat Tan Le, Duy-Minh Dang, Tran Vu Khanh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

We present an innovative decomposition approach for computing the price and the hedging parameters of American knock-out options with a time-dependent rebate. Our approach is built upon: (i) the Fourier sine transform applied to the partial differential equation with a finite time-dependent spatial domain that governs the option price, and (ii) the decomposition technique that partitions the price of the option into that of the European counterpart and an early exercise premium. Our analytic representations can generalize a number of existing decomposition formulas for some European-style and American-style options. A complexity analysis of the method, together with numerical results, show …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

In recent years there is a growth in the number of companies that offers cloud storage solutions. From user’s perspectives, it is becoming a challenging task to choose which cloud storage to use and from whom, based on user’s needs. In this context, no framework can evaluate the decision criteria for selection of cloud storage services. This paper proposes a solution to this problem by identifying the cloud storage criteria and introduces the PAPRIKA approach for measuring the criteria of cloud storage based on client’s preference. This work demonstrated the applicability of the framework (decision model) by testing it with …

From Bim (Building Information Modelling) To Bem (Building Energy Modelling): A Collaborative Approach, Emma Elizabeth Heffernan, Mohammed I. Sohel, Scott F. Beazley, Timothy J. Mccarthy

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

The use of simulation to predict building energy performance has been shown to have significant benefits in terms of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. However, in terms of implementation, the process can be disjointed and messy, with a lack of integration between architects and engineers. For the process of creating a building energy simulation to be more efficient, a seamless transition from an architectural design to an energy model is required. This paper highlights some of the practical issues manifest in the process of data exchange for energy analysis. It presents a proposed workflow for the exchange of …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

Surface elevation dynamics have always responded to disturbance regimes. Creating Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) to detect surface dynamics has led to the development of several methods, devices and data clouds. DEMs can provide accurate and quick results with cost efficiency, in comparison to the inherited geomatics survey techniques. Nowadays, remote sensing datasets have become a primary source to create DEMs, including LiDAR point clouds with GIS analytic tools. However, these data need to be tested for error detection and correction. This paper evaluates various DEMs from different data sources over time for Apple Orchard Island, a coastal site in southeastern …

Moving Beyond Body Image: A Socio-Critical Approach To Teaching About Health And Body Size, Jan Wright, Deana Leahy

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Concerns about young people's (read, young women's) body dissatisfaction in schools have resulted in the introduction of programs promoting positive body Image in an effort to reduce eating disorders. These programs, informed by psychological or socio-psychological notions of the relations between self and bodies, seem to have considerable credibility in schools and in the academic Iiterature because of their authoritative underpinnings. In this chapter, we want to examine the ways in which such programs engage with discourses around bodies, fat, and size. For example, do they challenge discourses of weight-based oppression, create safe spaces for learning about weight and size, …
