Journey To The New Frontier: Staff Experience In A Professional Development Program For Digital Dexterity, Renée C. Grant, Courtney A. Shalavin

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

A digitally literate workforce is no longer a choice but an imperative in this current era as organisations seek to develop and enable innovators and shapers of the new digital reality. However, it is not enough to be just digitally literate. Digital dexterity is the new frontier, extending beyond digital literacy by providing individuals with the ability to leverage media, information and technology. In a higher education environment, a digitally dexterous workforce is vital to facilitate innovation in learning and teaching and to keep pace with digital scholarship and research. Developing digital dexterity can be challenging due to varying levels …

Institutional Technology Adoption And Integration: A Holistic Grass Roots Approach To Inform Institutional Transformation, David Bruce Porter, Kristy Newton, Susan R. Downie, Dave Rigter

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

The capability to integrate educational technologies has become increasingly important for higher education institutions to be scalable and competitive. Addressing the barriers and enablers for the adoption of educational technologies can potentially catalyse institutional technology initiatives. To address one university’s technology adoption challenges, an ad hoc group of academic and professional staff, representing information technology, the library, educational design, and faculty units engaged in a collaborative reflection and institutional scan to identify the barriers to adoption and potential solutions. Methods: Beginning in April 2018, the group met fortnightly over three months to map the issues related to supporting technology integration across …

Fracture Toughness Of Cast And Extruded Al6061/15%Al2o3p Metal Matrix Composites, Alan K. Hellier, A. G. Crosky, H. A. Hassan, J. J. Lewandowski Jan 2018

Fracture Toughness Of Cast And Extruded Al6061/15%Al2o3p Metal Matrix Composites, Alan K. Hellier, A. G. Crosky, H. A. Hassan, J. J. Lewandowski

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Particulate reinforced metal matrix composites (PRMMCs) are of interest owing to the low cost of their raw materials and their ease of fabrication, making them suitable for applications requiring relatively high-volume production. The improved properties of PRMMCs result from the addition of hard ceramic particles (such as Al2O3 or SiC); the size, shape, volume fraction, interfacial properties and distribution of these (together with the fabrication method) determine the mechanical behaviour of the composite. However, PRMMCs have inferior ductility, toughness and low-cycle fatigue properties compared with unreinforced alloys, often limiting their usefulness in practice. Reinforcements of between 15 volume % and …

Residual Stress Effects On Fatigue Crack Growth From A T-Butt Weld Toe, Alan K. Hellier, H. Li, B. G. Prusty, G. M. Pearce, M. Reid, A. M. Paradowska Jan 2018

Residual Stress Effects On Fatigue Crack Growth From A T-Butt Weld Toe, Alan K. Hellier, H. Li, B. G. Prusty, G. M. Pearce, M. Reid, A. M. Paradowska

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A350 grade black mild steel is one of the most widely used structural materials in the world, being commonly found in buildings, bridges and offshore structures.Welding is commonly used to join two plates of structural steel and this often takes the form of a T-butt.In addition, other more complex geometrical joints are often simplified for stress analysis purposes by approximating them as 2-D T-butt plate models (e.g. skewed T-joints, cruciform welded joints, tubular welded joints, pipe–plate joints, etc.).However, all such welds are potentially susceptible to fatigue crack initiation and slow but accelerating growth arising as a result of fluctuating service …

Fracture Toughness Measurement For Aluminium 6061-T6 Using Notched Round Bars, Alan K. Hellier, P. P. Chaphalkar, B. G. Prusty Jan 2017

Fracture Toughness Measurement For Aluminium 6061-T6 Using Notched Round Bars, Alan K. Hellier, P. P. Chaphalkar, B. G. Prusty

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Current standard testing methods for determining plane strain fracture toughness (KIc), such as ASTM E399 and ASTM E1820, require a prior estimate of KIc, plus the specimens are large, involve a lot of machining and need fatigue pre-cracking. There is therefore a desire to develop new testing techniques which are simple, as well as cost and time effective. While the use of tensile notched round bars (NRB) test pieces is not novel, dating back to a conference paper by Brown in 1975, relatively few authors have so far attempted this.

Railway Turnout Failure Mode Analysis, H. Li, M. Carkagis, Alan K. Hellier, H. Zhu, J. Mcleod, S. Pannila

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A section of New South Wales’ railways rail turnout was removed, since testing revealed that it had become defective and no longer fit-for-purpose (see photos). The University of Wollongong was commissioned to investigate the failure mode of the track section, and to provide a detailed report on the material composition, heat treatment, surface finish, wear and any material defects. Since the turnout is over 25 years old, there are no test certificates or other quality assurance documents available for review.

Creating Online Chaos: A Short Guide, Celeste Liddle Aug 2016

Creating Online Chaos: A Short Guide, Celeste Liddle

Journal of Global Indigeneity

Activist groups were among the first to recognise the potential of the internet as a tool to organise. Aboriginal people use social media at a significantly higher rate than everyone else, and this trend, though not as pronounced, also holds for feminist networks as well. This session is going to talk briefly about how Celeste Liddle came to use the internet as a tool for social change and draw on examples from her blog, union work and broader to highlight its capacity as an alternate communication tool in a media environment which is still very much dominated by the voices …

Even The Activist’S Gotta Eat: Taking Ownership, Building Platforms, Leesa Watego

Journal of Global Indigeneity

Next September it will be a decade since Facebook became available to the general public. Since that time, Indigenous Australians and Indigenous Peoples worldwide have used Facebook to connect, express, and mobilise. The ready access that an email address gave, the easy and consistent interface, and the sometimes persistent pressure of one’s peers meant that most of us have willingly given ourselves over. For most, Facebook IS the internet. For a few others however, blogging becomes a goal once they realise the gated community has limitations. This paper will raise questions about how we provide support to those wishing to …

The Protect Mauna Kea Movement: Since Before The Overthrow In 1893, Katie Kamelamela Aug 2016

The Protect Mauna Kea Movement: Since Before The Overthrow In 1893, Katie Kamelamela

Journal of Global Indigeneity

The #ProtectMaunaKea movement started long before social media but with these new platforms a once remote audience has the opportunity, and option, to engage with a global audience. The newest Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) has been met with great opposition due to the decentralization of storytelling through social media outlets, #TMTshutdown. The Protect Mauna Kea movement is an amalgamation of individual pursuit, family recognition, and organizational support that is truly based in aloha, aloha ‘aina and kapu aloha, our foundational values. Through still and moving pictures sacred songs, chants, ideas and stories are being transmitted to persons around the world …

Navigation And Negotiation Of Fambamz On Facebook, Tuiloma Lina Samu Aug 2016

Navigation And Negotiation Of Fambamz On Facebook, Tuiloma Lina Samu

Journal of Global Indigeneity

Drawing on my PhD research Digital Navigators: Young Pasifika adults navigating Facebook in Aotearoa New Zealand, this presentation highlights points of difference about how Pasifika young adults are using Facebook particularly when it comes to intergenerational family dynamics. Young Pasifika adults are used to being under surveillance from older adults in their families, authorities and the wider community. They are very careful about the content they put on Facebook and are highly aware of protecting younger members of the family from negative experiences on social media. Pasifika peoples in Aotearoa have been strongly conditioned through religious colonisation experiences to be …

As an Indigenous Peoples Human Rights activist I will be speaking on Indigenous movements and the fight for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. My focus has been on the Immigration and Migration of Indigenous Peoples into the state of Arizona and throughout the USA. I am actively engaged in preserving the Cultural and Spiritual rights of Indigenous Peoples along the US and Mexico border, rights which are continuously violated by both the US and Mexican governments. Additionally, the border policies, and military actions by both governments have engaged in wide spread prejudice and discrimination within the US legal and political …

Health Economic Principles In The Uae, Immanuel Azaad Moonesar Jan 2012

Health Economic Principles In The Uae, Immanuel Azaad Moonesar

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

The demand for health care insurance exists because of the uncertainty associated with an individual’s state of health and the risk of very large expenditures in the case of illness and sickness (Dewar, 2010). The health insurance usually provides risk sharing between the insured and insurer, pooling risks among the insured, and sometimes risk sharing between the insurer and the healthcare providers (Getzen, 2010). In other words, people buy insurance because they are risk-averse. Sometimes there may be a demand for health care insurance without a need. On the other hand, there may be a need and not demand for …

Graduate School of Medicine - Papers (Archive)

An OSCE clinical log station: driving reflection on clinical competence development Hudson JN, Rienits H, Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong Background: An electronic clinical log was introduced at an Australian 4-year graduate entry medical school with the first intake of students in 2007. While some students embraced this log to record and reflect on their early clinical experiences, initial uptake of the log was low. Among the strategies used to encourage student use of this learning resource was the introduction of an innovative clinical log OSCE station. What was done: The clinical log station aimed to foster longitudinal …
