A Problem Of Berry And Knotted Zeros In The Eigenfunctions Of The Harmonic Oscillator, Alberto Enciso, David James Hartley, Daniel Peralta-Salas

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

European Mathematical Society 2018 We prove that, given any finite link L in R 3 , there is a high-energy complex-valued eigenfunction of the harmonic oscillator such that its nodal set contains a union of connected components diffeomorphic to L. This solves a problem of Berry on the existence of knotted zeros in bound states of a quantum system.

Dislocations Of Arbitrary Topology In Coulomb Eigenfunctions, Alberto Enciso, David James Hartley, Daniel Peralta-Salas

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

For any finite link L in R3 we prove the existence of a complex-valued eigenfunction of the Coulomb Hamiltonian such that its nodal set contains a union of connected components diffeomorphic to L. This problem goes back to Berry, who constructed such eigenfunctions in the case where L is the trefoil knot or the Hopf link and asked the question about the general result.

Developing Coal Burst Propensity Index Method For Australian Coal Mines, Xiaohan Yang, Ting X. Ren, Lihai Tan, Alex M. Remennikov, Xueqiu He Jan 2018

Developing Coal Burst Propensity Index Method For Australian Coal Mines, Xiaohan Yang, Ting X. Ren, Lihai Tan, Alex M. Remennikov, Xueqiu He

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Coal burst is the violent failure of overstressed coal, and it is often accompanied by sound, coal ejection and seismic events. It is subsequently recognized as a serious safety risk of Australia after double fatalities coal burst happened at Austar Coal Mine. Considering the increasing trend of coal burst severity and frequency with mining depth, it is an urgent task to develop the coal burst risk assessment methods for Australia underground coal mines. Coal burst propensity index method is a widely used method of burst risk evaluation of coal as it is summed up from the coal burst research and …

Column Averaged Dry Mole Fractions Of Carbon Dioxide In Alice Springs, Australia, Voltaire A. Velazco, Nicholas M. Deutscher, David W. T Griffith Jan 2018

Column Averaged Dry Mole Fractions Of Carbon Dioxide In Alice Springs, Australia, Voltaire A. Velazco, Nicholas M. Deutscher, David W. T Griffith

Research Data

Remote sensing measurements of column averaged dry mole fractions (DMF) of carbon dioxide (CO2), taken in Alice Springs, Australia. The measurements were taken using a portable spectrometer (Bruker model EM27/SUN, Gisi et al. , 2012). The column abundances were retrieved from solar absorption spectra using the retrieval software GGG2014 (Wunch et al., 2015).

Full-View Three-Dimensional Measurement Of Complex Surfaces, Limei Song, Yuan Ru, Yangang Yang, Qinghua Guo, Xinjun Zhu, Jiangtao Xi Jan 2018

Full-View Three-Dimensional Measurement Of Complex Surfaces, Limei Song, Yuan Ru, Yangang Yang, Qinghua Guo, Xinjun Zhu, Jiangtao Xi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

A full-view three-dimensional (3-D) measurement method for complex surfaces is proposed, where 3-D data for standard balls with different angles are used to calibrate the rotation axes of a turntable and obtain transformation matrices of 3-D data of adjacent views. It can achieve accurate registration of 3-D data of views with different angles and obtains full-view 3-D data for complex surfaces in conjunction with the method for principal point calibration of cameras and modified triple-frequency six-step phase-shifting phase demodulation methods. Experiments show that the developed system based on the proposed method can achieve automatic registration of 3-D data of views …

Organizing Online Computation For Adaptive Micro Open Education Resource Recommendation, Geng Sun, Tingru Cui, Ghassan Beydoun, Shiping Chen, Dongming Xu, Jun Shen Jan 2017

Organizing Online Computation For Adaptive Micro Open Education Resource Recommendation, Geng Sun, Tingru Cui, Ghassan Beydoun, Shiping Chen, Dongming Xu, Jun Shen

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

Our previous work, Micro Learning as a Service (MLaaS), aimed to deliver adaptive micro open education resources (OERs). However, relying solely on the offline computation, the recommendation lacks rationality and timeliness. It is also difficult to make the first recommendation to a new learner. In this paper we introduce the organization of the online computation of the MLaaS. It targets at solving the cold start problem due to the shortage of learner information and real-time updates of the learner-micro OER profile

Motion By Mixed Volume Preserving Curvature Functions Near Spheres, David James Hartley Jan 2015

Motion By Mixed Volume Preserving Curvature Functions Near Spheres, David James Hartley

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

In this paper we investigate the flow of hypersurfaces by a class of symmetric functions of the principal curvatures with a mixed volume constraint. We consider compact hypersurfaces without boundary that can be written as a graph over a sphere. The linearisation of the resulting fully nonlinear PDE is used to prove a short-time existence theorem for hypersurfaces that are sufficiently close to a sphere and, using centre manifold analysis, the stability of the sphere as a stationary solution to the flow is determined. We will find that for initial hypersurfaces sufficiently close to a sphere, the flow will exist …

More Law And Order On The Run, Julia Quilter Jan 2014

More Law And Order On The Run, Julia Quilter

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

After the July 2012 death of Thomas Kelly from a one-punch assault in Kings Cross, the NSW government engaged in a nuanced and multi-faceted response to alcohol-fuelled violence in Sydney’s major entertainment precinct. Unfortunately, the government’s latest response — the Crimes and Other Legislation Amendment (Assault and Intoxication) Act 2014 (NSW) (‘the Act’) — is deserving of no such praise. Not only is the argument that a discrete ‘one punch’ law is necessary in NSW without foundation, but the legislation has been drafted in a legally complex and confusing way that is likely to result in operational difficulty.

The Effect Of Detraining On Muscle Strength And Cross-Sectional Area Following Unilateral Resistance Training, Herbert Groeller, John A. Sampson Jan 2009

The Effect Of Detraining On Muscle Strength And Cross-Sectional Area Following Unilateral Resistance Training, Herbert Groeller, John A. Sampson

Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Muscle strength appears well preserved following short periods of detraining, despite a decline in muscle cross-sectional area and muscle activation. PURPOSE: This study determined the effect a 12-week unilateral elbow flexor resistance training regimen followed by 8 weeks of detraining on muscle cross-sectional area, muscle activation, and dynamic and static strength in trained and non-exercising contralateral limbs. METHODS: Ten males volunteered for the investigation and completed a 4-week pre-treatment training period (50-80%1RM) prior to commencing the experimental resistance training regimen. Subjects attended 3 sessions per week over 12 weeks of experimental training wherein they exercised at 85%1RM. Each subjects trained …
