The Impact Of Hypoxia On Mercury Methylation In Bottom Sediment Of Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Mei Huey Tan
The Impact Of Hypoxia On Mercury Methylation In Bottom Sediment Of Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Mei Huey Tan
LSU Master's Theses
Widespread concern has developed about high mercury content in fish in the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent estuaries and bays. Among the areas implicated as possible sources of the mercury that moves up the food chain from the methylmercury formed in sediments and anoxic waters is the seasonal hypoxic zone in the northern Gulf. This research was designed to determine if methylmercury formation is stimulated by the anaerobic sediment conditions accompanying the onset of summer hypoxia in the Gulf. Both field and laboratory studies were carried out. For the field study sediment samples were collected at three stations (i.e. C4, …
Spatial Distribution Of Anthropogenic Environmental Hazards In The Louisiana Coastal Zone: Implications For Ecosystem Restoration, Melissa Ann Kroninger
Spatial Distribution Of Anthropogenic Environmental Hazards In The Louisiana Coastal Zone: Implications For Ecosystem Restoration, Melissa Ann Kroninger
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this project was to assess the spatial distribution of anthropogenic environmental hazards in the Louisiana coastal zone and implications of those hazards for coastal resources and restoration efforts. Several state and federal environmental databases publicly available on the internet were selected for inclusion in this study. The hazard sites were mapped in a Geographic Information System by geocoding addresses obtained from the databases. Sites with unmatched addresses were mapped to zip code centroid. Hazard types in databases lacking spatial data at the address level were totaled and mapped by parish. Buffers were created at 1, 2, 3, …
Puncturing Ability Of Idealized Canine Teeth: Edged And Non-Edged Shanks, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen
Puncturing Ability Of Idealized Canine Teeth: Edged And Non-Edged Shanks, Patricia W. Freeman, Cliff A. Lemen
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Idealized edged and non-edged indenters, mimicking canine teeth, were used to puncture thin materials and thick materials. Less force was needed for the edged (triangular in cross section) indenter to penetrate thin Mylar, paper, leather, beetle elytra and turkey skin than the non-edged (circular in cross-section) indenter. Oak, grass and magnolia leaves responded equally to both indenters. In thick materials, the edged indenter punctured beetles, shrimp, bananas, and chicken flesh more easily than the non-edged indenter. Apple, tomato and avocado were punctured equally well. The edged indenter directs cracks at the corners so that the material can fold away in …
Sustainability Reporting At Higher Education Institutions, Robert Heilmayr
Sustainability Reporting At Higher Education Institutions, Robert Heilmayr
CMC Senior Theses
Multiple declarations, governmental and non-profit organizations and universities have issued a call for proper reporting of social and environmental impacts and initiatives within academia. Such reporting can increase awareness of environmental and social impacts, encourage development of sustainable policy and build a campus culture more committed to sustainability. Sustainability reporting at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has the added benefit of being a powerful teaching aid. This paper follows multiple lines of inquiry in order to determine whether HEIs are taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by sustainability reporting. The analysis evaluates the history of sustainability reporting at HEIs and compares …
Development Of Generalized Index-Removal Models, With Particular Attention To Catchability Issues, Thomas F. Ihde
Development Of Generalized Index-Removal Models, With Particular Attention To Catchability Issues, Thomas F. Ihde
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The index-removal method estimates abundance, exploitation and catchability coefficient, given surveys conducted before and after a known removal. The method assumes a closed population between surveys. Index-removal has seldom been applied due to its strong assumption of constant survey catchabilities. This work generalizes the method to allow multiple years of data to be incorporated, and the assumptions of the original model to be relaxed. If catchability is constant across years, precision can be improved by analyzing multi-year data simultaneously. Two multiple-year models were developed: the first, 1qIR, assumes constant catchability within and among years; the second, 2qIR, allows catchability to …
Development Of An Unstructured Grid, Finite Volume Eutrophication Model For The Shallow Water Coastal Bay: Application In The Lynnhaven River Inlet System, Yuepeng Li
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The shallow water region is an important portion of the estuarine and coastal waters, since it encompasses the entire land-water margin as the buffer zone and supports one of the most productive ecosystems. When light can penetrate to the sediment, it triggers the benthic microalgae community to perform photosynthesis, resulting in a benthic-pelagic exchange flux different from that of the deeper water. This study utilized the laboratory-measured benthic flux, and a suite of well-calibrated numerical models to examine the eutrophication process in the Lynnhaven River Inlet system with special emphasis on: the role played by benthic microalgae, and nutrient budgets …

Point Of Care Healthcare Quality Control For Patients Using Mobile Devices, Owen Lynch
Masters
The advances made in the domain of mobile telecommunications over the last decade offer great potential for developments in many areas. One such area that can benefit from mobile communications is telemedicine, which is the provision of medical assistance, in one form or another, to patients who are geographically separated from the healthcare provider. When a person is ill, individual attention from medical professionals is of the utmost importance until they have returned to full health. However, people who suffer with long term and chronic illnesses may need life long care and often must manage their condition at home. Many …

Synthesis Of Some Pyridinone Nucleoside Analogues As Antitumor Agents, Shaikha Saif Saeed Alneyadi
Theses
Abstract
3-Deazapyrimidine nucleosides have been shown to exhibit great potential as pro drug for use in medicine especially as antagonists to cancer tumors and the HIV-virus. Recent research has focused on the design, synthesis and characterization of novel nucleoside analogues.
Fluoropyridinone and their corresponding nucleoside derivatives have been synthesized and characterized to induce the activity against tumors. 4, 6-diaryl-3-cyano-2(1H)-pyridinones (82a-i) and their nucleosides were prepared. A trifluoromethyl group was introduced into the pyridinone ring system to study its effect on different tumor cells. The glycoside analogues (83a-e, 85a-e, 87a-e and 88a-d) have been synthesized …
Development Of Electroanalytical Methods For The Determination Of Sialic Acid As A Biomarker For Cancer, Khawla Ali Rashid Al-Tayyari
Development Of Electroanalytical Methods For The Determination Of Sialic Acid As A Biomarker For Cancer, Khawla Ali Rashid Al-Tayyari
Theses
Sialic acid (SA) is a general term for a family composed of 43 derivatives of neuraminic acid. Whereas N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) is the most commonly occurring sialic acid in human. There has been a great interest in the determination of SA in humans because variations in SA level was linked to different medical conditions and diseases. In particular, serum SA are elevated in several types of cancers. SA also exists in Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone, which induces the production of red blood cells and hence used in the treatment of anemia.
Although of the great physiological significance of SA …

Date Palm (Phoenix Dactylifera L.) Tissue Culture: Type Of Contamination And Improvement Of Disinfestation Techniques, Mouza Nasser Al-Shamisi
Theses
Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) cultivation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is considered one of the most important economic supports for the agricultural sector. Propagation of date palm by offshoots cannot satisfy the increasing demand of date palm trees, and high propagation rate can only be achieved using tissue culture techniques. However, one of the major problems of this technique is the failure of producing aseptic cultures, yielding to the loss of the explants at the initiation phase.
The objectives of this study were to develop a reliable disinfection technique of date palm explants at the initiation …

Effects Of Novel Synthetic Nucleosides As Anti-Tumor Agents On Human Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia Cell Line (Hl-60), Salma Awad Merghani Mahmoud
Theses
Nucleosides and their analogs are considered a clinically proven class of therapeutic agents possessing anticancer and antiviral activity. Several trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrazole N-nucleosides (coded NIA, NIIA and NIIA) and their nucleobases were synthesized and tested for the ability to induce apoptosis in acute human promyelocytic cell line (HL-60). The growth and proliferation of HL-60 was more effectively inhibited by NIA, NIIA and their nucleobases compared to NIIIA and its nucleobase. In addition, DNA fragmentation was detected in a concentration-dependent manner as a result of nucleosides treatment. A caspase-3-dependent apoptosis was observed based on the Western blot analysis of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP) …

Shoreline evolution is the change in shore position through time. In fact, it is the material resistance of the coastal geologic underpinnings against the impinging hydrodynamic (and aerodynamic) forces. Along the shores of Chesapeake Bay and Rappahannock River, it is a process-response system. The processes at work include winds, waves, tides and currents, which shape and modify coastlines by eroding, transporting and depositing sediments. The shore line is commonly plotted and measured to provide a rate of change but it is as important to understand the geomorphic patterns of change. Shore analysis provides the basis to know how a particular …

Some Factors Affecting The Interfacial Interaction At Thermomechanical Pulp Fiber And Polypropylene Interphase, Sangyeob Lee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focused on some selected factors that influence the interfacial interactions at the interphase between wood based materials and thermoplastic surfaces. Several treatments were applied to enhance interfacial properties. In general, interfacial properties were altered by physical and chemical surface modification. Study of the interfacial interactions between wood fiber surfaces as a reinforced material and thermoplastics as a matrix material is important to understand fundamentals of wood fiber-plastic composites (WPC). This study represents fundamental research to define treatment effects on surfaces of wood pulp fibers and polypropylene (PP) film. Two thermosets, ion implantations, and maleic anhydride (MA) grafting were …
