An Analysis Of Consumer Preferences For Gardening Products With Environmentally Friendly Attributes, Mckenzie Lynn Thomas May 2019

An Analysis Of Consumer Preferences For Gardening Products With Environmentally Friendly Attributes, Mckenzie Lynn Thomas

Masters Theses

Consumers have expressed preferences for gardening products that have environmental benefits or ecofriendly attributes. These products can utilize fewer resources in production, reduce the need for further inputs as well as return nutrients back to the earth. Utilizing a survey of Tennessee indoor and outdoor gardeners, the following two papers estimate how consumer demographics, behaviors and attitudinal variables influence the propensity of a consumer to prefer environmentally friendly gardening products and their use of a specific ecofriendly gardening product, potting mix with biochar. Some key findings from the first paper include that consumer gardening practices and demographic characteristics influence the overall …

Masters Theses

This thesis presents two separate studies focusing on producers and consumers in the United States cattle industry. The objective of the first study was to analyze the differences between a text cheap talk script and a visual cheap talk script in an online choice experiment to see if it decreased or eliminated hypothetical bias. The product evaluated was Tennessee Certified Beef, specifically USDA Choice boneless ribeye, with other attributes to complement the beef product. Using a random parameters logit model, results indicated that willingness to pay (WTP) estimates for respondents who saw the visual cheap talk script were higher than …

A Bayesian Approach To Multi-Drone Source Localization Methods, Joshua James Gurka May 2019

A Bayesian Approach To Multi-Drone Source Localization Methods, Joshua James Gurka

Masters Theses

From abandoned Soviet reactors to lost submarines and stolen medical materials, stewardship of the world’s nuclear materials throughout the nuclear age is not what one might hope it to be. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) estimates around 3000 incidents of illicit trafficking, theft, or loss of radioactive materials have occurred since 1993 [1]. Locating lost or stolen materials is no simple task, particularly when there is little information about the type of source or its activity, whether or not the source is stationary or being transported, and at large distances the signal-to-noise ratio is a limiting factor. Since the …

Holocene Climate Variability In Hispaniola: Sedimentary Alkane Evidence Of Precipitation During The Terminal Classic Drought, Elizabeth Maclennan

Masters Theses

Laguna Saladilla (19.656 N, 71.715 W) is a large (220 ha) freshwater lake located near sea level on the north coast of Hispaniola, 2 km south of Monte Cristi National Park in the Dominican Republic, and 1 km east of the international border with Haiti. Results of prior analyses of pollen, microscopic charcoal, mollusk shells, and diatoms in an 8.5-m sediment core from the lake were interpreted to largely indicate shifts in salinity and water depth attributed to relative sea level rise over the middle and late Holocene (Caffrey et al., Paleogeography, Paleoecology, Paleoclimatology 436: 9–32, 2015). Mollusk assemblages indicated …

Studies Of Molecular Magnetism And Dynamics By Inelastic Neutron Scattering And Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Zhiming Liu May 2019

Studies Of Molecular Magnetism And Dynamics By Inelastic Neutron Scattering And Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Zhiming Liu

Masters Theses

This thesis is mainly focused on studying molecular magnetism by inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Other techniques such as high-frequency electron paramagnetic resonance (HF-EPR) and DC magnetic susceptibility are also utilized to provide more comprehensive understanding. The sign and magnitude of axial zero-field splitting parameter D of Mn(TPP)X (H2TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin; X = Br and I) have been directly determined by INS and are consistent with the measurement of HF-EPR. Mn(TPP)F is EPR silent in both solid (5-290 K) and frozen solution (10 K in chloroform) state, making it different from its Br …

Persona, Print, And Propaganda: Orlando Di Lasso And Constructions Of Self In Counter-Reformation Bavaria, Tara Leigh Jordan May 2019

Persona, Print, And Propaganda: Orlando Di Lasso And Constructions Of Self In Counter-Reformation Bavaria, Tara Leigh Jordan

Masters Theses

Musicians often regard Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594) as Giovanni de Palestrina’s lesser-known, northern contemporary, with Palestrina standing as the pinnacle of Counter-Reformation sacred music in the current musicological canon. However, this conception of Lasso does not align with his reputation during his own time, where he stood as the most popular and cosmopolitan composer in Europe. In order to cultivate this reputation, Lasso exercised personal agency over his image as represented within his compositions and print publications, fashioning himself into a versatile and widely appealing musician that composed in every genre of both sacred and secular music. However, Lasso simultaneously …

An Exploratory Study Of The Relationship Between Exposure To Interparental Domestic Violence And Young Adults’ Physical Health Symptoms, Shahad Ahmed Subiani May 2019

An Exploratory Study Of The Relationship Between Exposure To Interparental Domestic Violence And Young Adults’ Physical Health Symptoms, Shahad Ahmed Subiani

Masters Theses

Research on children’s exposure to interparental domestic violence (CEDV) has mostly examined the association between CEDV and children’s externalizing and internalizing problems, with less emphasis on CEDV’s impact on physical health outcomes. However, research has shown that CEDV has the potential to negatively influence youth development and adjustment, as represented by physical health symptoms. Emerging research suggests that CEDV impacts youth differently depending on the characteristics of the physical violence and the extent to which the DV is rooted in coercive control. However, this CEDV complexity has not been examined within the physical health outcome literature. To address these gaps, …

On The Resilience Of Supply Chain Design Under Disruptions, Samarth Shashank Vagal May 2019

On The Resilience Of Supply Chain Design Under Disruptions, Samarth Shashank Vagal

Masters Theses

It is not possible to design a system in which there are no failures. To make the system more efficient, it is important to design the system in such a way that once the failure has occurred, the system can be restored to its full functionality in a short span of time. For a system to perform this task, we need to make the system "resilient". The basic idea of resilience is the ability to recover from an occurred failure in a system so that the system is performing at its best level. Resilience can be applied to all types …

Heat Sensitization Of Human Enteric Viruses By Plant Extracts And Validation Of Their Thermal Inactivation By Bacterial Surrogates, Mayuri Hemant Patwardhan May 2019

Heat Sensitization Of Human Enteric Viruses By Plant Extracts And Validation Of Their Thermal Inactivation By Bacterial Surrogates, Mayuri Hemant Patwardhan

Masters Theses

Human enteric viruses including hepatitis A virus (HAV) and human noroviruses (HNoV) predominantly are linked to foodborne outbreaks worldwide. Heat has been historically used to inactivate foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms to increase safety and also prolong shelf-life. Recent foodborne viral outbreaks have enhanced the need for research to determine optimal processing approaches and thermal inactivation parameters such as D- and z-values, for their control. Heat-sensitization of foodborne viruses by "generally recognized as safe''(GRAS) substances can potentially reduce their time-temperature inactivation parameters during processing. HAV reportedly has higher resistance to heat (in buffer the D72°C was 0.9 min) than known …

This filter enables long-term battery powered operation of a highly selective harmonic signal discriminator for an analog signal processing system. The Gm-C biquadratic circuits were fabricated in a 0.18-μm [micrometer] CMOS process. Each 2nd-order biquad filter nominally consumes 20 μW [microwatt] and can be programmed for the desired gain (0db3dB), quality factor (5 to 20), and center-frequency from 1kHz to 100kHz. The 8th-order filter channel achieved an effective quality factor of …

The Influence Of Task Dynamics On Object-Label Mapping: Synchrony Between Perception And Action, Abigail Julian Dimercurio May 2019

The Influence Of Task Dynamics On Object-Label Mapping: Synchrony Between Perception And Action, Abigail Julian Dimercurio

Masters Theses

Often areas of infant development such as action and cognition are studied separately, despite fine interactions between the two developmental systems. Specifically, there is a relationship between motor skills and language development seen with a robust, positive correlation between more advanced locomotor skills and larger vocabulary sizes. Additionally, when infants create a large number of different object views through manual object exploration, they also demonstrate larger vocabulary sizes later in development. The present study proposes a model of examining language skills, specifically object-label mapping using Dynamic Systems Theory with multileveled interactions between attention, infant manual exploration, and novel label timing …

“Make Someone Love Something And Share Your Passion”: Perceptions Of Coach Caring Amongst Elite Women’S Rugby Sevens Athletes, Sierra Morris

Masters Theses

Previous researchers have explored the effects of caring (see Noddings, 1992) on self-efficacy, motivation, and, ultimately, performance in physical activity contexts (e.g., Gano-Overway et al., 2009). However, the construct of coach caring has only recently been explored with coaches at the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) level (Fisher et al., 2017a, 2017b; Knust & Fisher, 2015). Results suggest that DI coaches define caring as fostering strong relationships, providing athletes with everything they need to succeed, and developing the whole person for life outside of sport. Since DI coaches believe that coach caring can lead to greater …

Synechocystis: Low Dosage And Rapid Response To Ethylene, Cidney Jean Allen May 2019

Synechocystis: Low Dosage And Rapid Response To Ethylene, Cidney Jean Allen

Masters Theses

Ethylene is a well-studied plant hormone, that has been shown to affect different aspects throughout the life cycle of plants. The ethylene receptors in plants resemble two component signaling models found in bacteria. Recent studies have identified a functional ethylene receptor, ethylene response 1 (Etr1), in sp. Strain PCC 6803. Etr1 is known for its two component signaling photoreceptor capabilities. The light signaling pathway from Etr1 involves two proteins that serve as response regulators (Slr1213 and Slr1214) and a small RNA, carbon stress-induced RNA1 (csiR1). It has been shown that Etr1 plays a role …

Reducing Skim Milk Powder Dispersion Turbidity By Dissociation Of Casein Micelles At Acidic And Neutral Ph: Physicochemical Properties And Possible Mechanisms, Inseob Choi May 2019

Reducing Skim Milk Powder Dispersion Turbidity By Dissociation Of Casein Micelles At Acidic And Neutral Ph: Physicochemical Properties And Possible Mechanisms, Inseob Choi

Masters Theses

Casein micelles comprise 80% of dairy proteins. However, casein micelles as the source for protein fortification in beverages are limited due to its contribution to dispersion turbidity. On the other hand, protein beverages are experiencing substantial market growth and what follows is the demand for new protein ingredients. At acidic conditions, like those commonly found in lots of beverages, dispersions of skim milk powder (SMP) have high turbidity and readily precipitate. In order to circumvent these problems, the dissociation of casein micelles is required to reduce turbidity and improve dispersion stability during storage. Additionally, beverages with neutral pH are preferred …

Assessing Eating Disorder Signs And Associated Personalities In An Adolescent Sample, Jessi Rose Dietrich

Masters Theses

Background: An eating disorder is defined as a severe disturbance to a person’s eating behaviors or obsessions with food, body weight, and/or shape. Eating disorders are characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits such as skipping meals or avoiding specific food groups among others. Although eating disorders are most commonly seen in young female adults, they often develop earlier during adolescence and can also be seen. Research with adult populations has identified the relationship between eating disorders and personality traits. Specifically, neuroticism is positively associated with increased eating disorder tendencies. However, it is unknown if this same relationship between personality …

Blind Bernoulli Trials: A Noninteractive Protocol For Hidden-Weight Coin Flips, Richard Joseph Connor May 2019

Blind Bernoulli Trials: A Noninteractive Protocol For Hidden-Weight Coin Flips, Richard Joseph Connor

Masters Theses

We introduce the concept of a "Blind Bernoulli Trial," a noninteractive protocol that allows a set of remote, disconnected users to individually compute one random bit each with probability p defined by the sender, such that no receiver learns any more information about p than strictly necessary. We motivate the problem by discussing several possible applications in secure distributed systems. We then formally define the problem in terms of correctness and security definitions and explore possible solutions using existing cryptographic primitives. We prove the security of an efficient solution in the standard model. Finally, we implement the solution and give …

Masters Theses

The observation and analysis of solar-type stars has been a rich area of research. Determining what the Sun was like when life was first taking hold on Earth, and what the Sun will be like as it ages with the potential impacts on the future Earth, provides the motivation for a number of monitoring campaigns to photometrically and spectroscopically measure collections of solar-like stars (solar analogs). One such campaign, The Young Solar Analogs (YSA) Project, has been monitoring 30 stars in the range of ages 300 million to 1.5 billion years old, and spectral classes F8 - K2 [10]. The …

Coulomb Corrections For Inclusive Electron Scattering Data, Jay Thomas Carroll May 2019

Coulomb Corrections For Inclusive Electron Scattering Data, Jay Thomas Carroll

Masters Theses

Experiment E89-008 was performed using the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in 1996. It measured inclusive electron scattering for D [deuterium], ¹²C [carbon 12], ⁵⁶Fe [iron 56], and ¹⁹⁷Au [gold 197]. Of those, the ¹²C, ⁵⁶Fe, and ¹⁹⁷Au data was analyzed in terms of F(y), which is a tool that was used to understand the momentum distribution of nucleons in the nucleus. However, the processing on this data was incomplete, and Coulomb corrections were never applied. These corrections are essential in finalizing and completing the processing of the E89-008 data. To apply …
