The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise Jan 1938

The Catalytic Vapor-Phase Hydrolysis Of Benzene And Toluene, Clemens Raebel Maise

Masters Theses

"The vapor-phase synthesis of organic compounds represents a new field of study which has attracted the attention of investigators only within recent years. However, wide interest is apparent in this field and several processes of commercial importance have already been developed. Hydrolysis is perhaps the newest of all the types of vapor-phase synthesis; the literature consists of little more than a few patents...The vapor-phase hydrolysis of benzene and toluene, therefore, presented an interesting possibility. These two hydrocarbons are considered very stable toward water in the liquid-phase. The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent their stability toward …

A Comparison Of Methods For The Determination Of Iron In Clays And Related Ceramic Materials, Hoyt Gillum Thompson Jan 1938

A Comparison Of Methods For The Determination Of Iron In Clays And Related Ceramic Materials, Hoyt Gillum Thompson

Masters Theses

"Iron is always present in clay and ceramic products. This element has a definite effect upon the properties of substances containing it, hence it is important for the ceramist to know the exact amount of this element present in a ceramic material. Many methods have been devised for the precise determination of iron, both in large and small amounts. Of the many methods used, the American Society for Testing Materials has listed only two for the examination of clays, refractories, and similar material...However the amounts of iron for which these methods are most suitable are not given. Nor does the …

Cotton Varieties In Tennessee, 1928-1931, N. J. Stanford

Masters Theses

From the cotton variety study in Tennessee, from 1928 through 1931, the following questions arise: What varieties are grown? What is the trend? What is the effect of present practices on the quality of cotton produced? Where are these varieties grown? Are there many one-variety farms? What is the possibility of establishing one-variety communities? What is the quality of seed used by producers?

An effort will be made in this report to answer as many of these, and related questions, as time and available information will permit.

A History Of Brushy Mountain Penitentiary, Ruth Winton Aug 1937

A History Of Brushy Mountain Penitentiary, Ruth Winton

Masters Theses

Among the problems which confronted the legislature of Tennessee in 1893 was that of abolishing the convict lease system in the state. The results of the coal miners' insurrections in 1891-1892 made it imperative that the state take complete charge of her convicts. In order to meet this situation, coal lands were purchased in 1894 in Morgan County, and Brushy Mountain Penitentiary was built, at Petros, in 1896, so as to take care of the leased convicts at the expiration of the convict lease system, January 1, 1896. The purpose of this study has been to trace the development of …

Tennessee's Policy In The Removal Of The Cherokee, Minnie Hazel Myers Aug 1937

Tennessee's Policy In The Removal Of The Cherokee, Minnie Hazel Myers

Masters Theses

PREFACE: Indian removal was one of the most vital problems in the early history of the State of Tennessee. When this state came into the Union she had title to only two widely separated triangles of land, one in northern Middle Tennessee, the other in East Tennessee. The Indians held title to all other lands within her limits, and these lands practically surrounded the white settlements. Squatters who settled upon Indian soil and holders ot North Carolina land warrants petitioned the Federal Government to purchase Indian land; public officials pleaded for the purchase of Indian land to aid in the …

Masters Theses

(From the Definition and Scope of the Study)

At the outset of the project, originally undertaken in the fall of 1936, it was hoped to discover certain definite facts regarding the status of foreign languages at the University (the trend of enrollment toward each of the various languages or away from them, and from what other subjects of the curriculum students came to foreign languages or to what subjects they went from them; the total enrollment in the various languages over the years studied, etc., etc.). It was not at that time fully appreciated how much effort and time …

Efforts Of The Continental Congress To Promote Manufactures And Domestic Arts In The Colonies, Floyd Neal Penick Aug 1937

Efforts Of The Continental Congress To Promote Manufactures And Domestic Arts In The Colonies, Floyd Neal Penick

Masters Theses

While efforts were made to promote manufactures in the colonies long before the Revolutionary War began, this struggle forced the Continental Congress to exert more strenuous efforts for the encouragement of the production of certain necessary commodities than had formerly been made. These endeavors, however, were largely incidental to the greater work of successfully prosecuting a war. It is probably true that more emphasis would have been placed upon the domestic manufactures at this time had the Revolution not occurred. The non-importation agreements, passed because of the Intolerable Acts and similar measures, made such a result almost inevitable.

A Study Of Vocational Agriculture In The Westmoreland Community (Sumner County, Tennessee) From July 1, 1931 To June 30, 1936, Nelson H. Baulch

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine the work that the department of vocational agriculture of the Westmoreland High School has accomplished during the five-year period from July 1, 1931, to June 30, 1936.

Perhaps one of the most outstanding advantages in the teaching of vocational agriculture is the fact that the students are required to conduct supervised farm practice programs on their home farms. Since this is true, it should be the aim of every teacher of vocational agriculture to raise the standards of the agricultural conditions of his community. It has been assumed that this can best …

Management Of Dairy Cattle Breeding Establishments, Daniel Evans Harris Aug 1937

Management Of Dairy Cattle Breeding Establishments, Daniel Evans Harris

Masters Theses

It is the purpose of this thesis to present and discuss the problems of farm management and dairy herd management as they apply particularly to the dairy cattle breeding establishment. Much has been written on farm management dealing with the ordinary type of farms of the country. However, the progressive breeding establishment is far from an ordinary farm and special application of farm management facts found in the literature must be made to the breeding establishment. Very little literature relating directly to this subject is to be found.

Aquiculture, Hugh T. Ramsey Jun 1937

Aquiculture, Hugh T. Ramsey

Masters Theses

There is every evidence that the productivity of our ponds, lakes, and streams can be materially increased by the intelligent application of present scientific knowledge to this problem.

For many years it has been recognized that our streams and lakes are becoming more and more barren of fish, and other aquatic life, but remedial measures, until recently, have been applied to only one-half of the problem. Efficient fish hatchery systems are maintained, both state and federal, and millions of fingerlings and legal-size fish are planted each year in an effort to increase the fish population of our waters, and to …

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay

Masters Theses

"Sodium thiosulfate was one of the pioneer reagents used in photography, and is still the most important reagent used in photographic fixing. The solubility of the silver halides in an excess of sodium thiosulfate makes it important as a reagent for removing the undeveloped silver halides from the film. The life of a fixing bath is controlled by the halogen content. As the ratio of halogens to sodium thiosulfate is increased, the time required for fixing is also increased until the ratio reaches such a point that fogging of the film results. Most of the solutions are discarded long before …

The Military History Of East Tennessee, 1861-1865, Frank P. Smith

Masters Theses

Campaigns of the Civil War may be place in three major divisions: the fighting in Virginia, with it attendant invasion of Maryland and Pennsylvania, between the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of the Potomac; the campaigns of the West, covering Kentucky, Middle and West Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Carolinas; and the trans-Mississippi struggles.

With the exception of the Chattanooga campaign, East Tennessee was not included in these larger maneuvers and battles, probably because of its topographical features and geographical location. However, there are certain facts regarding the region during the Civil War that are of interest. …

A Study Of Family And Personal Relationships Of 69 Girls In A Public Junior College In Mississippi, Fleta Estelle Whitaker Aug 1936

A Study Of Family And Personal Relationships Of 69 Girls In A Public Junior College In Mississippi, Fleta Estelle Whitaker

Masters Theses

(From the Introduction) The extensive development in the physical and biological sciences, according to Flora Rose of Cornell, has resulted in more momentous changes in our environment than had occurred in the previous history of mankind. It is unfortunate, however, that during this same period few developments have been brought about in the social sciences. Because of this, our relationship to our environment and to each other is often unbalanced. Our ways of thinking, feeling, and acting have not changed to meet these new conditions. Thus, our behavior patterns belong to a simpler social organization than the complex …
