The Properties Of Refractories In Zinc Metallurgy. Part Iii. Comparison Of Various Clays, Richard Elkanah Sears

Masters Theses

"This thesis...contains a description of a part of a general investigation on the subject of the refractories used in the distillation of zinc. This investigation has been in progress for the past eighteen months at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, in cooperation with the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri. The first phase of this investigation had for its theme the determination of the properties of the fire clays and body mixtures now used in the manufacture of zinc retorts. The second phase deals with the …

German And Swiss Colonization In Morgan County, Tennessee, Hobart Schofield Cooper Dec 1925

German And Swiss Colonization In Morgan County, Tennessee, Hobart Schofield Cooper

Masters Theses

Preface

It is frequent occurrence that certain phases of the development of history escape even the most observant writers of history. In some cases facts overlooked and unrecorded are of negligible importance. In others, these unrecorded incidents leave a flaw, as it were, in the logical trend of historical events. Likewise, incidents of seeming local interest in extent when properly interpreted and coordinated often prove of inestimable value in the light of historical account. It is with a view of presenting a new hitherto unmentioned event in the history of Tennessee that the subject of this thesis was selected.

It …

The Feed Cost Of Producing Milk, Theodore Goodloe Hinton Aug 1925

The Feed Cost Of Producing Milk, Theodore Goodloe Hinton

Masters Theses

Though this problem of the cost of producing milk has been on worked on extensively in a number of states, very little has been done in the South, particularly in Tennessee. Anyone well acquainted with dairy feeding conditions in this state knows that there is an abundance of room for improvement. The production of the average Tennessee cow is low, and due mainly to poor cows, poor feeding and poor handling.

Realizing these things it was thought worth while to do some work toward determining the feed cost, or mere strictly speaking, the pounds of the several different classes of …

A History Of The Cherokee Indians Of The Tennessee Region From 1783 To 1794, Ralph Walter Frost Aug 1925

A History Of The Cherokee Indians Of The Tennessee Region From 1783 To 1794, Ralph Walter Frost

Masters Theses

Preface: The purpose of this thesis is to narrate the relationships that existed between the settlers and the Cherokee Indians occupying particularly what is now the State of Tennessee, with special attention to the character of both powers as brought forth by their contact with each other, and to the policies of each toward the other. The years 1783 to 1794 form an important period in the history of the United States and also the history of the Tennessee region. The Nation was in a state of confusion. The Continental Congress constituted the National power during most of these years …

The Evolution Of The Public School System In Tennessee, John Taliaferro Rennolds Aug 1925

The Evolution Of The Public School System In Tennessee, John Taliaferro Rennolds

Masters Theses

(From Introduction)

It is my purpose here, as far as possible, to trace and interpret the educational trend of the public mind in this state and the legislation which was its outcome; also the results, as far as the records make them appear, of this legislation in its practical application and its effects upon public opinion, which again was reflected in the legislation. We shall attempt to follow, as nearly as the meager records, especially before the Civil War, will permit, the trial and error method which has characterized the development of the schools of our State.

The Sugar Content Of Blood, Ben King Harned Mar 1925

The Sugar Content Of Blood, Ben King Harned

Masters Theses

Summary and Conclusions:

1 We have shown that the picric acid methods are not accurate.

2. We have shown that the titrimetric methods are not adapted to clinical use.

3. We have demonstrated that the Folin-Wu method, which gives the same results

as the titrimetric methods, and is the most accurate method used in clinics,

gives results approximately 15 per cent too high, because of interfering

substances.

4. We have developed a mercuric nitrate method, specific for blood sugar by

virtue of the fact that it precipitates interfering substances before making the

determination.

5. We have developed an acetone method, …

Effect Of Various Factors On The Rate Of Reduction Of Zinc Ferrite, Calamine, And Willemite By Carbon, Foster Cary Nix Jan 1925

Effect Of Various Factors On The Rate Of Reduction Of Zinc Ferrite, Calamine, And Willemite By Carbon, Foster Cary Nix

Masters Theses

"Zinc ores containing large amounts of ferric oxide, calamine and willemite have been known for a long time among practical zinc metallurgists to be more difficult to reduce than ores of the same type but free from the above named compounds. This has been thought to be due to the high temperatures necessary for the reduction of the zinc ferrite and the zinc silicates by carbon. The ferrite is formed both during the roasting of sulphide ores and during distillation in the retorts, while calamine and willemite are introduced as such in the ores. The amount of ferrite formed during …

A Granular Briquette Resistance Furnace For The Electrothermic Dry Distillation Of Zinc Ores, Milton E. Countryman

Masters Theses

[This thesis] "describes experiments carried on at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, cooperating with the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri, which had for their purpose the development of a 'granular briquet [sic] resistance furnace' for the electrothermic dry distillation of zinc ores"--page v.

Effect Of The Size Of Particles Of Zinc Ore And Carbon Upon The Rate Of Reduction Of Zinc Ore By Carbon, Keith Oxley Alexander Jan 1925

Effect Of The Size Of Particles Of Zinc Ore And Carbon Upon The Rate Of Reduction Of Zinc Ore By Carbon, Keith Oxley Alexander

Masters Theses

"In the retort smelting of zinc ores one of the chief metallurgical problems is to obtain as complete a reduction of the zinc as is consistent with economical operation. Among the factors influencing the completeness of reduction are the temperature and time of distillation, the form in which the zinc exists in the ore, the form of carbon used as reducer, and the size of the particles or ore and reducer"--Introduction, page 1.

The Properties Of The Fire Clays Used For The Manufacture Of Zinc Retorts, Adolph Harmon Kuechler Jan 1925

The Properties Of The Fire Clays Used For The Manufacture Of Zinc Retorts, Adolph Harmon Kuechler

Masters Theses

"The ultimate object of this refractories investigation is to develop a body for zinc retorts, or changes in the method of their manufacture, that will result in better retorts than the ones now in use. In doing this, the question of permissible cost must, at all times, be kept in mind. The immediate object of the present phase of this investigation, of which this thesis covers only a part, is to determine the physical and chemical properties of the refractories (fire clays, grogs, bodies, etc.) now used for the manufacture of zinc retorts. This will be a basis for later …

Masters Theses

In the present paper an attempt is made to bring together careful and newly rewritten descriptions of the adult moths of all the species occurring in Tennessee. No previous attempt has been made to describe the genitalia altho Felt many years ago figured some of them. The notes on the habits, distribution and seasonal history of the various species are the result of numerous observations made during the past ten years in the writer's travels over the state.

For some of the species there is not previous record of any of the facts of their life histories and for none …

The Teaching Of Games In Elementary Schools, A. Watt Hobt Aug 1924

The Teaching Of Games In Elementary Schools, A. Watt Hobt

Masters Theses

(From Introduction)

The great impetus given to games during recent years and the knowledge that play, to be educational, must be taught and supervised, has led to a demand for teachers of play and a resulting demand for college courses for teacher training in play. Many states have recently passed physical education laws requiring play instruction by trained teachers. The play movement has changed according to Rainwater; "From provision for little children to that of all people; from facilities operated during the summer only to those maintained thruout the year; from out-door equipment and activities only to both …

The Solubilities Of Certain Inorganic Salts In Anhydrous Normal Alcohols, William Orval Keeling Jan 1924

The Solubilities Of Certain Inorganic Salts In Anhydrous Normal Alcohols, William Orval Keeling

Masters Theses

"An examination of the literature shows that extensive studies have been made of the solubilities of inorganic salts in aqueous, normal alcohols, but that little has been done in determining the solubilities in anhydrous alcohols. Northing was found of a systematic study of the solubilities of NaCl, KCl, NaN0₃ and KNO₃ in the lower alcohols over a fairly wide range of temperature. The author has made a study of the solubilities of the above mentioned salts in lower anhydrous normal alcohols at the temperatures 20°C, 25°C, 30°C and 40°C"--Introduction, page 1.

The Reduction Of Zinc Oxide By Carbon, George August Zeller Jan 1924

The Reduction Of Zinc Oxide By Carbon, George August Zeller

Masters Theses

"In spite of the fact that the reduction of zinc oxide by carbon is the fundamental reaction upon which the pyrometallurgy of zinc is based, there is a decided lack of accurate knowledge concerning the mechanism of the reaction, the temperature at which it begins, and the effect of various factors upon the rate at which it takes place"--Introduction, page 1.

Lactose Fermenting Bacteria In The Water Supplies Of The Rolla Quadrangle, Joe Beaty Butler Jan 1924

Lactose Fermenting Bacteria In The Water Supplies Of The Rolla Quadrangle, Joe Beaty Butler

Masters Theses

"I. Preliminary investigations. This includes the securing of 139 water samples from water sources in the Rolla Quadrangle, and inoculating 1cc samples from these into Dunham's Lactose tubes and thereby getting lactose gas production checks on the field samples. II. Confirmatory tests. This consisted in the isolation of lactose fermenters on Eosin-Methylene Blue Agar and checking of the cultures back through the lactose and then through dulcitel and saccharose so as to complete Jackson's Classification. 106 cultures were classified in this manner. III. Running through a complete set of tests of pure cultures, so as to completely (as possible) identify …

Conductivity And Ionization Of Certain Salts In Absolute Alcohol, Armin Brene Jewell Jan 1924

Conductivity And Ionization Of Certain Salts In Absolute Alcohol, Armin Brene Jewell

Masters Theses

"One of the most striking observations one makes in connection with the study of the conductivities of alcoholic solutions is their great similiarity [sic] to those of aqueous solutions with the exception that the values of the concentrations are very much smaller. The differences are rather of degree than of kind. It will be noted that as the temperature is increased the molecular conductivity increases and the fraction of salt decreases which is what would be expected by analogy"--Discussion, page 43.

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh Jan 1924

Hydro-Electric Treatment Of Joplin-Miami Zinc Concentrate, David Francis Walsh

Masters Theses

"The Electrolytic Process is a process capable of almost unlimited mechanicalization. For obvious reasons it is more economic to treat high grade concentrates; yet, the extremely high grade concentrates are not essential. The Electrolytic Process can treat economically concentrates as low as 30.% zinc under certain conditions. It is significant that as the grade of concentrates offered for treatment is lowered, the treatment cost per ton of concentrates decreases for the Electrolytic Process; whereas, it will increase, as previously stated, for the Retort Process. It is seen then that the position of the Electrolytic Process is strengthened where lower grade …

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers Jan 1924

On Plain Carbon Steel, Walter Edward Remmers

Masters Theses

"In 1921, an investigation was carried on by Messrs. Howe, Foley and Winlock, under the auspices of the National Research Council, the results of which were published under the title of - "Influence of Temperature, Time and Rate of Cooling on Physical Properties of Carbon Steel," by the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, February, 1923. These results showed that all physical properties of a 0.34 C. percent steel are improved by increasing the rate of cooling from temperatures above the critical range up to a certain rapidity beyond which, there is a gain in strength at the expense …

This study of the development of the apple scab fungus, Venturia inaequalis (Cooke) Winter, was begun January first 1922. The ultimate aim of the work was to study the development of the fungus under Tennessee conditions in order to determine more accurately the best time to spray for the protection of the host against the fungus. Throughout this study special attention was given to the following points:

The time at which the first ascospore discharge occurs.

The duration of the ascospore discharge.

Correlation of the weather conditions and the development of the fungus.

The advancement of the apple buds, leaves …

Teacher-Training In High Schools, Mabel W. Hardin May 1923

Teacher-Training In High Schools, Mabel W. Hardin

Masters Theses

It is the purpose of this paper to make a study of the efforts being made in the United States to train rural-school teachers in the public high schools and county training schools.

An interest in this study, on the part of the writer, has been awakened by a growing conviction that the normal schools are not functioning in furnishing a force of teachers that love the business of country teaching well enough to stay with it until they can effect permanent improvement, even if the number of normal graduates were equal to the demand; and that normal schools, in …

The Ciris And Ovid: A Study Of The Language Of The Poem, Richmond Frederick Thomason May 1923

The Ciris And Ovid: A Study Of The Language Of The Poem, Richmond Frederick Thomason

Masters Theses

Introduction:

Some twenty-five poems, known as the Vergilian Appendix, and attributed by the ancients to the youthful Vergil, have come down to us in inferior manuscripts, but not in the great Vergilian codices. Among the best known of these poems are three short epics, the Culex, the Aetna and the Ciris. For centuries scholars have been agreed that all the poems of the Appendix are spurious, with the possible exception of one or two very short pieces which are contained in the Catalepton and which purport to give certain personal details. [Note. The present study has been prepared in cooperation …

On The Breakage Of Rock Drill Steel, Muir Luken Frey Jan 1923

On The Breakage Of Rock Drill Steel, Muir Luken Frey

Masters Theses

"Prior to 1920 there was little attention paid to the general problem of breakage of rock drill steel. Each locality had its problem and the matter was treated as a purely local one, independent upon conditions in that particular section. But in the above-mentioned year, there arose an interest of wider scope, from what causes it is impossible to determine accurately, and the matter is now the subject of a broad investigation in which the users of rock drill steel, the United States Bureau of Mines, and the United States Bureau of Standards are cooperating...There is, to date, no satisfactory …

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby Jan 1923

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby

Masters Theses

"In experimental work carried on at East St. Louis, Illinois in 1916 and 1917, with a furnace of commercial size for the electrothermic dry distillation of zinc ores, a difficulty that developed was the destruction of the firebrick lining in certain parts of the large condenser. The condenser was satisfactory in other ways, yielding a large proportion of the zinc as liquid metal, with no blue powder; but in order to obtain a proper length of service from the condenser it became necessary to find and overcome the cause of the disintegration of the lining ... it will be evident …

Effect Of Time And Temperature On Distillation Of Zinc-Lead-Silver Complex Sulphide Concentrates, Ernest Sterling Wheeler Jan 1923

Effect Of Time And Temperature On Distillation Of Zinc-Lead-Silver Complex Sulphide Concentrates, Ernest Sterling Wheeler

Masters Theses

"Accurate information is lacking as to the effect of temperature and time of distillation on the relative proportions of zinc, lead and silver volatilized from complex ores, and while it is evident that the possibility of the commercial treatment of these complex ores has engaged the attention of metallurgists for years, it is one that will still bear investigation even on a small scale"--Statement of Problem, page 5.

Determination Of The Solubilities Of Lithium, Sodium, And Potassium Sulphates In Absolute Methyl And Ethyl Alcohols, Jennie Lynn Lenox Jan 1922

Determination Of The Solubilities Of Lithium, Sodium, And Potassium Sulphates In Absolute Methyl And Ethyl Alcohols, Jennie Lynn Lenox

Masters Theses

"It was thought by the author that there might be some relation between the solubility of a salt in the alcohols and the position of those alcohols in the series of monohydric alcohols; that is, that there should be a definite increase or decrease in the solubility of any particular salt in going from a higher to a lower alcohol. The object of this paper was to find the solubilities of some simple salts in as pure alcohol as could be prepared, and to find any relationships if possible"--page 2.

Investigations In Colloidal Phenol, Charles James Millar Jan 1922

Investigations In Colloidal Phenol, Charles James Millar

Masters Theses

"In making some experiments with various colloids it was noticed that phenol and water seemingly formed a colloid, so it was deemed advisable to experiment farther and see if this fact could be established. The references on this subject vary widely and for this reason some of them are given here. Ostwald recognised [sic] the colloid state of a phenol-water mixture at the critical temperature but evidently failed to see the possibility of the phenol-water colloid at all temperatures. In the following article I will try to show that the phenol-water mixture forms a colloid, not only at the critical …

The Equilibrium Of The Reaction Zn + Co₂ = Zno + Co, Clarence Ware Burkhart Jan 1922

The Equilibrium Of The Reaction Zn + Co₂ = Zno + Co, Clarence Ware Burkhart

Masters Theses

"Many attempts have been made in the last twenty years to smelt zinc ores in the electric furnace. The disadvantages of the present retort process have been discussed so often that they need not be dwelt upon here. The principle ones are, the low thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, low metal recoveries, small smelting units necessary, short life of the retorts and the difficulty of treating impure and low grade ores. Electric smelting offers remedies for most of these difficulties"--Introduction, page 1.
