Perceived Social Support, Self-Esteem, And Locus Of Control As Predictors Of Health Behaviors, Including: Participation In Regular Physical Activity And Smoking Behavior., Gail Marie. Rizzuto-Dowling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among perceived social support, self-esteem, and locus of control with overall health behaviours, including regular physical activity and smoking behaviour. Each predictor variable: perceived social support, self-esteem, and locus of control has been described as a theoretical construct within the health-related literature. Perceived social support was measured via Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ), Self-esteem was measured via the Coopersmith Self-Inventory (SEI), and Locus of control was measured via the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC). Overall health behaviours, a dependent variable was measured via the Personal Lifestyle Questionnaire (PLQ). Regular …

Phosphotyrosine-Containing Proteins During Spore Germination Of Dictyostelium Discoideum., Mona Louise. Gauthier Jan 1995

Phosphotyrosine-Containing Proteins During Spore Germination Of Dictyostelium Discoideum., Mona Louise. Gauthier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This present study contributes to the growing hypothesis of signal transduction processes to be the underlining mechanisms which induce Dictyostelium discoideum spores to autoactivate and release nascent amoebae. This work focuses on the role of tyrosine phosphorylation during germination and the extracellular signals which govern the phosphorylation/dephosphorylation of specific protein(s) on their tyrosyl residues. Probing for phosphotyrosine-containing proteins during the germination program of this organism by Western blot analysis using anti-phosphotyrosine antibodies revealed at least ten proteins with relative mobilities between 207kDa and 32kDa. The pattern observed was shared by all strains examined, V12, NC4, SG2 and SG1, independent of …

Pilferers Not Professionals: The Shoplifting Experiences Of Fourteen Canadian Women., Gina. Sampson Ryan Jan 1995

Pilferers Not Professionals: The Shoplifting Experiences Of Fourteen Canadian Women., Gina. Sampson Ryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Shoplifters and shoplifting is the focus of this thesis. Fourteen adult, female shoplifters in Windsor, Ontario and Cape Breton, Nova Scotia were interviewed over a period of three months in 1993. The motivations of these Canadian women were explored in an attempt to answer the questions of who, what, where, when, how and why. Previous research on shoplifters and shoplifting is limited and Canadian research especially, has consisted of few studies and government documents. It is argued that shoplifting is not only a crime of poverty, but one of control as well. Women shoplift for a variety of reasons, but …

An Exploratory Study Of Community Support For The Elderly 85 Years And Older., Margomary. Hawkes Jan 1995

An Exploratory Study Of Community Support For The Elderly 85 Years And Older., Margomary. Hawkes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examines that segment of the population which is variously referred to as the 'old old' (Neugarten, Croty and Tobin 1964; Neugarten and Miller 1964), and the 'frail elderly' (Baker 1988; Novak 1988)--which this study will refer to as the 'most elderly'. These are people who are eighty-five years of age and older. Since Canadians are living longer and healthier lives, the questions arise: how is society preparing for a larger older population, and how are the present 'most elderly' dealing with the day-to-day exigencies of life? Since these 'most elderly' were born just before or just after the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aluminum matrix composites, with high strength and high thermal stability, are replacing cast iron in automotive engine and brake components where temperature exceeds 200$\sp\circ$C. Intermetallic materials are designated high temperature materials and considerable progress has been made in improving their ductility. Thus two materials, representing each class of materials with potential tribological application prospects, have been selected for this work. Sliding wear of Al6061, Al6061-20%Al$\rm\sb2O\sb3$ and $\rm Ti\sb{50}Ni\sb{47}Fe\sb3$ was studied in the temperature range 25-520$\sp\circ$C against a SAE52100 steel counterface. A new wear machine was constructed to operate in the temperature range 25-1000$\sp\circ$C. Both wear rates and coefficient of friction …

To assess the relevance of H4IIE for human populations, we examined levels of aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activities H4IIE rat liver, HepG2 human liver and MCF-7 human breast cells after exposure to a variety of HAHs. These included TCDD, and three coplanar non-ortho substituted polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners: 3,3$\sp\prime$,4,4$\sp\prime$-tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 77), 3,3$\sp\prime$,4,4$\sp\prime$5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126), and 3,3$\sp\prime$,4,4$\sp\prime$,5,5$\sp\prime$-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB 169), either alone or in combination. AHH and EROD activities were also examined after treatment with muscle tissue extracts of Lake Ontario rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). H4IIE was generally more sensitive to all HAH treatments. AHH and EROD activities …

The Effectiveness Of The Site Plan Control Process In Windsor, Ontario, 1988-1992., Nancy Louise. Morand Jan 1995

The Effectiveness Of The Site Plan Control Process In Windsor, Ontario, 1988-1992., Nancy Louise. Morand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

All of Ontario's twenty most populous municipalities utilize Site Plan Control (SPC) as a method to closely control development. All but Windsor and Thunder Bay apply SPC on a municipality-wide basis. The City of Windsor has not placed the entire city under SPC, but rather only specific geographic areas, thus offering a rare opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the Site Plan Control process. Thirty commercial developments which proceeded under SPC during the five year period from 1988 to 1992 were compared to thirty which proceeded in NON-SPC areas. Variables for comparison were chosen that related directly to the three …

Use Of Remotely Sensed Data To Detect Recent Changes In Both Areal Boundary And Species Composition Of Mangrove Communities Along The Guyana Coast., John Michael. Kovacs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two approaches were taken to investigate mangrove forests located along the coast of Guyana. The first involved assessing the extent of recent changes for both species composition and areal boundary, as well as identifying the major factors associated with these changes. The second approach involved evaluating satellite imagery as a means for monitoring these communities. For the first study, a Geographic Information System (GIS) was utilized to track the changes over time. It was determined that mangrove communities located between the Pomeroon and Corentyne Rivers have experienced an overall decrease by 5.57% or a loss of 24.93 km$\sp2$ between the …

Windsor Airborne Trace Metal Stratification Study (Ontario)., William Donald. Henderson Jan 1995

Windsor Airborne Trace Metal Stratification Study (Ontario)., William Donald. Henderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The results of this investigation show that the placement of air samplers for the accurate assessment of the concentration of airborne trace metals is critical. The collection of airborne metal laden particulate matter by filtration at different heights above the ground at three different locations in Windsor, Ontario, Canada demonstrated the importance of sampler placement. This air sampling strategy for investigation of airborne trace metals was modelled after that used by Ontario's Ministry of Environment and Energy for its "Cities of the 90's" air toxics program. This strategy included using a 47 mm Whatman 41 filter paper air sampling medium, …

Synthesis Of Multilevel Pass Transistor Logic Networks., Arunita. Jaekel Jan 1995

Synthesis Of Multilevel Pass Transistor Logic Networks., Arunita. Jaekel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traditional design of logic circuits involves implementing a function in terms of standard logic gates. However, this type of design does not fully exploit the unique switching properties of MOSFETs, which can lead to more efficient realizations. Over the past decade there has been considerable interest in Pass Transistor Logic (PTL) circuits. PTL circuits implement a logic function as a network of NMOS transistors. They show enhanced performance over conventional logic in terms of both speed and area optimization as well as reduced power dissipation, particularly for certain classes of circuits. Existing synthesis techniques for PTL are limited to two-level …

The Conflict Tactics Scale: Assessing The Meaning, Context, And Consequences Of Partner Violence., Renee A. Cormier Jan 1995

The Conflict Tactics Scale: Assessing The Meaning, Context, And Consequences Of Partner Violence., Renee A. Cormier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test if the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) is a valid measure of the incidence/prevalence of partner violence and whether it overestimates the comparability of male and female victimization. Similar to other studies using the CTS, 36% of females and 52% of males reported being victimized by either a current or past partner. Significantly more females (55%) than males (34%) reported perpetrating an act from the CTS. Responses on the CTS would therefore suggest that females are more violent than males and that males suffer more abuse, but the supplementary information concerning the …

This thesis examines the subject of community "high-crime" reputation. The site chosen as a case study is Olde Sandwich Towne, Windsor, Ontario, to which this label has been applied. A combination of field and literature research, interviews, and participant observation inform this thesis. In examining the characterization of Olde Sandwich Towne as a high-crime area, this study describes the basis for the label as demonstrated in how the label developed, problems created by the label, the process of community deterioration, and crimes which, according to police data, are typical of the community. This study also evaluates attempts by the community …

Psychotherapy's Impact On Society., Peter. Cobrin Jan 1995

Psychotherapy's Impact On Society., Peter. Cobrin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychotherapy's impact on society is examined by comparing the relevant literature on the issue with themes generated from 24 semi-structured interviews with practising psychotherapists. The process of transforming the interview material into a hierarchical arrangement of themes is based on Rennie's (1992) version of Grounded theory. The study is also based on Lather's (1991) attempt at combining critical theory with social constructionist inquiry. Generally, the main purposes of this study are: (1) to better understand how psychotherapists make sense of their role in society; (2) to assist psychotherapists in thinking about these issues; and (3) to incorporate the experiences of …

Simple Torsion Free C(,2)-Modules Having A 2-Dimensional Weight Space., Ling Chen Jan 1995

Simple Torsion Free C(,2)-Modules Having A 2-Dimensional Weight Space., Ling Chen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Let L denote a finite dimensional simple Lie algebra over the complex numbers $\doubc$ having a Cartan subalgebra ${\cal H}$. The classification of all simple ${\cal H}$-diagonalizable L-modules having all finite dimensional weight spaces is known to depend on determining the simple torsion free L-modules of finite degree. It is further known that the only simple Lie algebras which admit simple torsion free modules of finite degree are those of types A and C. For the case of $C\sb2$ we prove that every indecomposable torsion free $C\sb2$-module of degree 2 is simple and it is equivalent to a submodule of …

Investigation Of The Use Of The Object-Oriented Paradigm In The Construction Of A Triple Store Based On Dynamic Hashing., Rajesh. Shenoy Jan 1995

Investigation Of The Use Of The Object-Oriented Paradigm In The Construction Of A Triple Store Based On Dynamic Hashing., Rajesh. Shenoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Any set of knowledge, no matter how complex, can be represented as a collection of triples, each of which consists of a subject identifier, relationship name, and object identifier. In order to support applications in natural language processing, it is advantageous if a triple can be retrieved using any field or a combination of fields as key. An appropriate data structure to support this type of access consists of multiple copies of the collection of triples, each of which is structured as a dynamic hash table. Such a data structure has a number of features which could cause problems in …

An alternative social constructivist based approach to leadership and culture management is developed for, and evaluated in conjunction with, a five member senior management team for a large social service agency. The research is praxis-oriented, emergent in design, and emancipatory in its intent (Lather, 1991; Morgan, 1993). Lincoln and Guba's (1985) method of Naturalistic Inquiry is used to guide the conduct of the inquiry. The central purposes of the study are to: (1) develop a constructivist based theory of social organizing through the conceptual integration of leadership and culture; (2) design and conduct a training and application initiative focused on …

Organizational Effectiveness In A Human Service Context., Andrea. Plotnick Jan 1995

Organizational Effectiveness In A Human Service Context., Andrea. Plotnick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Human service organizations (HSOs) are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate their effectiveness. Yet there is both an absence of appropriate management models for HSOs and often a lack of recognition of inherent differences among HSOs. One important dimension on which HSOs can be differentiated is operational certainty, defined here as environmental certainty, technological determinacy and formal structuralization. Two descriptions of office skills-training programs were developed, to represent each end of the operational certainty dimension. A college-based office skills-training program was described with high environmental certainty, high technological determinacy and high formal structuralization and a community-based office skills-training program was …

A Backcast Methodology For Planning And Justification Of Advanced Manufacturing Technology Acquisition: A Model Of Capability Building Process., Zheng. Liu Jan 1995

A Backcast Methodology For Planning And Justification Of Advanced Manufacturing Technology Acquisition: A Model Of Capability Building Process., Zheng. Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Inadequacies of conventional investment justification methodologies in Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT) cases are well known. The inadequacies mainly stem from exclusion of qualitative and "intangible" factors when evaluating AMT investment proposals. To address the problem, a framework of AMT planning and justification is presented in this paper. The framework takes a 'backcast' approach, in which the AMT acquisition is modelled as an essential effort in a process of building manufacturing capabilities for a firm's long term competitiveness positioning. The intangible benefits associated with AMT acquisitions are explicitly considered and modelled as a set of manufacturing capability measures. Non-financial, or activity-based …

A Comparison Between Selected Aspects Of The National Curriculum In England And Wales And The Common Curriculum In Ontario, With Particular Reference To The Science Programs In Both Systems., Bernard. Taylor Jan 1995

A Comparison Between Selected Aspects Of The National Curriculum In England And Wales And The Common Curriculum In Ontario, With Particular Reference To The Science Programs In Both Systems., Bernard. Taylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study argues that the Transition Years science programs in Ontario, when compared with the National Curriculum science programs for Key Stage 3 in England and Wales, are being implemented in ways which: are less assessment driven, promote a wider variety of teaching methods, give teachers more ownership of the curriculum, and are less centralised. In investigating these hypotheses the researcher looked at the historical background to recent curriculum changes in Ontario, and in England and Wales, as well as interviewing teachers, principals and headteachers, and administering questionnaires, in both Ontario and England and Wales. The study showed that the …

Concrete Culverts Reinforced With Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics (Gfrp)., Atef Awad. Hanna Jan 1995

Concrete Culverts Reinforced With Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics (Gfrp)., Atef Awad. Hanna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The use of Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) in reinforced concrete culverts has been investigated as an alternative rust free material to replace the conventional steel bars. Structures reinforced with GFRP show early development of cracks followed by proportional increase in loading and deflection as a result of the reduced bending rigidity compared to members reinforced with steel rebars. The reduction in bending rigidity is desirable in buried structures due to the fact that their behaviour is governed by the soil-structure interaction in which the bending moment and shear forces are reduced in the culvert walls with the reduction of …

An Assessment Of Bicycle Transportation Policy In Ontario., Patrick Joseph. Dunn Jan 1995

An Assessment Of Bicycle Transportation Policy In Ontario., Patrick Joseph. Dunn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined Ontario's bicycle transportation policy. An attempt was made to understand why bicycle transportation is receiving attention and what conditions--political and practical--are necessary to increase bicycle use in Ontario's urban centres. Using the Netherlands as a policy model, the political factors driving bicycle transportation were identified as well as the practical components to increase bicycle travel. In the broader policy environment, substantive policy measures are motivated by a political necessity to limit automobile use, while supporting transportation alternatives. As policy is an important determinant of mode choice, bicycle transportation must be supported by pro-active policy. In addition, bicycle …

An Analysis Of Manual Postal Sorting And Station Design Using Electromyography., Chris Peter. Kourtis Jan 1995

An Analysis Of Manual Postal Sorting And Station Design Using Electromyography., Chris Peter. Kourtis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Twelve subjects sorted mail to discover if the mail sorting task or station design caused repetitive strain injury symptoms. Subjects performed the task at six different stations. Each station had two design components for study. Electrodes were placed on the deltoid, trapezius and infraspinatus muscles to study localised muscle fatigue, which is known to be a contributing factor to repetitive strain injuries. 54% of the male and 33% of the female trials resulted in statistical indications of muscle fatigue. There was no indication that the occurrence of indicators was due to station design. Additional analysis was performed using subjective responses …

Field Independence-Dependence, Self-Concept And Playfulness In Preadolescents., Sandra Leanne. Bosacki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this paper was to investigate the relationships between field independence-dependence (FI-FD), self-concept and playfulness in preadolescent girls and boys. Sixty-three sixth-grade students (33 girls, 30 boys) from four classes in three schools in Southwestern Ontario participated in the study, with each student completing the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT; Witkin, Oltman & Raskin, 1971) and The Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI; Coopersmith, 1967). The students' current teachers (2 female, 2 male) and those from the previous year (2 female, 3 male) completed the Playfulness-NonPlayfulness Scale (PF-NonPF; Lieberman, 1977a). Contrary to prediction, no significant gender differences or correlations were …

Purification, Characterization, And Functional Investigations Of Novel Platelet Proteins., Jeffrey Stephen. Baldwin Jan 1995

Purification, Characterization, And Functional Investigations Of Novel Platelet Proteins., Jeffrey Stephen. Baldwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, a novel Kunitz inhibitor of trypsin-like enzymes has been discovered in bovine platelets that has a higher degree of association for plasmin than trypsin, and thereby has been termed bovine platelet plasmin inhibitor (BPPI). Basic problems in the purification, resulting in protein that was essentially insoluble, has hampered structural determinations by x-ray or NMR analysis. An investigation into the cause of the protein insolubility has revealed that an excessively high concentration of acetonitrile, used to elute the protein from a C18 reversed-phase cartridge, was most probably the cause of the insolubility. Concentrated BPPI solutions permitted the preparation of a …

Metalated Macrocyclic Receptors., James Edward. Kickham Jan 1995

Metalated Macrocyclic Receptors., James Edward. Kickham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The dissertation describes the incorporation of a stable organopalladium fragment into several macrocyclic structures, in which three of four palladium coordination sites are permanently occupied by an S$\sb2$C ligand "bracket". The remaining metal site is filled by a more labile donor, and is used for binding ancillary ligands (substrates) such as phosphines, o-aminopyridine, DNA nucleobases and hydrazine derivatives. Chapter 2 describes the synthesis, oxidative addition, and coordination chemistry of (Pt(TT(11) MC)) (BF$\sb4\rbrack$ (4), (PD(TT(11) MC)) (BF$\sb4\rbrack$, (8) and (Pd(pr-TOMB-1)) (BF$\sb4\rbrack$ (14), in which one donor (E = S,O) is displaced by stronger ancillary ligands, as confirmed by X-ray structural data …
