The Social Construction Of The Male Batterer As 'Normal'., Sandra Ann. Macmillan Jan 1995

The Social Construction Of The Male Batterer As 'Normal'., Sandra Ann. Macmillan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research, from a feminist constructionist perspective, attempts to deconstruct society's view of the male batterer as normal from legal documents such as police and probation reports, court transcripts, psychological reports and women's own accounts. This latter data was collected by the Michigan Battered Women's Clemency Project for women in Michigan prisons who are sentenced to lengthy incarceration for committing violent crimes related to the battering situation. This study goes against the existing literature available on men's violence against women and explains men's violence in terms of power and control on a structural and individual level. The existing research available …

The Verification Of Object-Oriented Programs And Programs With Exception Handling Constructs., Matthew. Blain Jan 1995

The Verification Of Object-Oriented Programs And Programs With Exception Handling Constructs., Matthew. Blain

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is a masters thesis on the verification of object-oriented programs. An object-oriented mini-language and proof system are constructed. Polymorphism, one of whose characteristics is the ability to assign objects of more than one type to a given variable, is a major feature in this mini-language. Class specifications are introduced as a tool for verifying properties of classes within a program. Specifications for classes are especially valuable in the verification of reusable classes. Another problem that is addressed is how a specification for a class B can be derived from a valid specification for another class A given that B …

Psychological Adjustment To Breast Cancer: Congruence Of Locus Of Control And Information And Decision-Making Participation., Betty Jane. Kirkland Jan 1995

Psychological Adjustment To Breast Cancer: Congruence Of Locus Of Control And Information And Decision-Making Participation., Betty Jane. Kirkland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Forty-two breast cancer patients were interviewed to examine the relationship between psychological adjustment to breast cancer, current locus of control orientation, and treatment approach (i.e., amount of medical information received and degree of treatment participation). Specifically, the present study tested Reid's (1984) "congruence hypothesis" which suggests that a treatment approach congruent with locus of control orientation is associated with better psychological adjustment than a mismatched approach. Psychological adjustment was assessed with the profile of Mood States (McNair, Lorr, & Droppleman, 1971, 1992) and three subscales--emotional adjustment, sexual adjustment, and appearance satisfaction--of the Mastectomy Attitude Scale (Heyl, 1977). Locus of control, …

Self-Report Of Depressive Symptomatology And Daily Hassles: Effects Of Instructional Set, Gender, And Gender Role Orientation., Karen Anne Marie Holowaty Jan 1995

Self-Report Of Depressive Symptomatology And Daily Hassles: Effects Of Instructional Set, Gender, And Gender Role Orientation., Karen Anne Marie Holowaty

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has demonstrated that experimental cues, whether overt or subtle, intended or unintended, affect experimental behavior. More specifically, investigators from various research areas have shown that cues within a testing or experimental setting can affect responding to self-report instruments. Differences in the self-report of depressive symptomatology and daily hassles according to gender, gender role orientation, and manipulated instructional set were investigated. It was hypothesized that both depression scores and hassles scores would differ according to manipulated instructional set. It was also hypothesized that the depression and hassles scores of males and females would differ significantly, and that scores would …

Self-Regulated Learning Strategies: Their Relation To Academic Performance And Self-Efficacy In Chemistry And English., Linda E. Staudt Jan 1995

Self-Regulated Learning Strategies: Their Relation To Academic Performance And Self-Efficacy In Chemistry And English., Linda E. Staudt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study examined the relationships between the reported use of self-regulated learning strategies, student achievement, course and student characteristics, and self-efficacy perceptions. Two hundred and forty-eight Grade 11 students at the advanced and general levels of study completed a Learning and Study Strategy Questionnaire in Chemistry and/or English. Students taking courses at the advanced level of study were found to be greater users of self-regulated learning strategies than those students taking courses at the general level. Select higher-order strategies were positively correlated with achievement at the advanced level. At the general level, reported use of any of the nine identified …

Simultaneous Part Family And Machine Cell Formations In Cellular Manufacturing Systems: An Analytical And Algorithmic Approach., A. Alper. Ozdemir Jan 1995

Simultaneous Part Family And Machine Cell Formations In Cellular Manufacturing Systems: An Analytical And Algorithmic Approach., A. Alper. Ozdemir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Increased level of global competition and rapid changes in consumers' tastes have forced the companies to reorganize their manufacturing operations, in a way that they can produce large variety of products, in small quantities, at high quality and at a low competitive price. Cellular Manufacturing Systems have been identified as the key in achieving these objectives. In this research, mathematical programming models are developed for single and multi period planning horizons, respectively. The objective of the models is to minimize the total cost function associated with the design of cellular manufacturing systems, while minimizing exceptional part types and obtaining a …

Spatial Patterns Of Milk Consumption In The Soviet Union, 1985 And 1989., Daniel Paul. Shafransky Jan 1995

Spatial Patterns Of Milk Consumption In The Soviet Union, 1985 And 1989., Daniel Paul. Shafransky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study focused on the factors affecting milk consumption in the Soviet Union in the years 1985 and 1989. These two years were chosen because complete data sets existed for the former Soviet Union and they represented the time period before the Soviet demise. The factors affecting the levels of milk consumption are assessed.Dept. of Geography. Paper copy at Leddy Library: Theses & Major Papers - Basement, West Bldg. / Call Number: Thesis1995 .S52. Static And Dynamic Responses Of Simply Supported And Continuous Skew Composite Bridges., Tarek Ibrahim. Ebeido Jan 1995

Static And Dynamic Responses Of Simply Supported And Continuous Skew Composite Bridges., Tarek Ibrahim. Ebeido

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The load distribution factor concept allows the design engineer to consider the longitudinal and transverse effects of wheel loads as two separate phenomena and thus simplifying the analysis and design of the bridge. North American codes of practice do not provide the design engineer with sufficient guidance regarding elastic load distribution factors for skew composite bridges. These codes of practice also require a check to be made on the strength of the sections of the bridge at the ultimate limit state, but they specify the use of elastic load distribution factors for the evaluation of the design forces at the …

Vuv Spectroscopy Of Rf Plasma Sources., Jan. Li Jan 1995

Vuv Spectroscopy Of Rf Plasma Sources., Jan. Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this experiment we observe the spectra from RF discharges through SF$\sb6,$ CF$\sb4$ and CH$\sb4$ and some mixtures of these and helium over the wavelength range of 115-315 nm. In the spectra of SF$\sb6,$ strong sulphur atomic lines were observed to cover the wavelength range of 120-195 nm. Fluorine features should be even stronger, but no fluorine lines were observed because their wavelengths are shorter than 100 nm and are cut off by the MgF$\sb2$ window on the detector. The intensity-pressure variations of SI lines have been established in chapter 4 as well as the relative intensity ratios for lines …

Women And Aids: The Social Construction Of Female Sexuality And The Barriers To Hiv Preventive Behaviours (Immune Deficiency)., Jacqueline C. Gahagan Jan 1995

Women And Aids: The Social Construction Of Female Sexuality And The Barriers To Hiv Preventive Behaviours (Immune Deficiency)., Jacqueline C. Gahagan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An examination of the social construction of female sexuality is used to gain insights into the gap between AIDS knowledge and safer sex behaviours. The analysis of data brought forth by 20 open-ended interviews with young women at The University of Windsor is used to assist in understanding the barriers faced by these individuals as they attempt to negotiate safer sex. The emphasis of this research has been placed on the interviews as a method of going beyond quantitative data in attempting to recognize how young women make sense of their sexual experiences and the social context within which they …

Universality, Family Allowance And The Closing Federal Door., Thecla Debra. Moore Jan 1995

Universality, Family Allowance And The Closing Federal Door., Thecla Debra. Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The historical development of federal activity in the income security system up to the early 1990s is examined in this thesis. The main argument of this thesis is that the federal government has slowly undermined the dominance of the welfare state by eroding the concept of social rights that is fundamental principle of the Canadian welfare state. The attack on the family allowance program by both the Trudeau government, from 1973 to 1978, and the Mulroney government, from 1984 to 1992, serves as the primary example of this circumstance. The influence of neo-conservatism is believed to have shaped the direction …
