The Family Inventory Of Resources For Management: Content Validity And Utility Among Mothers Living At Home With Adult Sons/Daughters Who Have Developmental Delays., Elizabeth Jane. Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current study explored the use of internal and external resources, that were identified as helpful, by mothers who had adult sons/daughters with developmental delays living at home. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 mothers (ranging in age from 47 to 79 years) and analyzed qualitatively using a "constant comparative" approach. Ten categories of resources emerged from the analysis namely, Community Agencies, Employers, Family Members, Friends/Neighbours, Health Professionals, Husbands, Informal Networks, Personal Resources, Religious Faith, and Schools. However, a correlational analysis revealed that the only category significantly related to the Family Inventory of Resources for Management (FIRM), a test designed …

The Conflict Tactics Scale: Assessing The Meaning, Context, And Consequences Of Partner Violence., Renee A. Cormier Jan 1995

The Conflict Tactics Scale: Assessing The Meaning, Context, And Consequences Of Partner Violence., Renee A. Cormier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to test if the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) is a valid measure of the incidence/prevalence of partner violence and whether it overestimates the comparability of male and female victimization. Similar to other studies using the CTS, 36% of females and 52% of males reported being victimized by either a current or past partner. Significantly more females (55%) than males (34%) reported perpetrating an act from the CTS. Responses on the CTS would therefore suggest that females are more violent than males and that males suffer more abuse, but the supplementary information concerning the …

Leadership And Culture: Developing A Constructivist Approach To Social Organizing., Edward Murray. Vokes Jan 1995

Leadership And Culture: Developing A Constructivist Approach To Social Organizing., Edward Murray. Vokes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An alternative social constructivist based approach to leadership and culture management is developed for, and evaluated in conjunction with, a five member senior management team for a large social service agency. The research is praxis-oriented, emergent in design, and emancipatory in its intent (Lather, 1991; Morgan, 1993). Lincoln and Guba's (1985) method of Naturalistic Inquiry is used to guide the conduct of the inquiry. The central purposes of the study are to: (1) develop a constructivist based theory of social organizing through the conceptual integration of leadership and culture; (2) design and conduct a training and application initiative focused on …

Individualism-Communalism And Employment Equity: The Effects Of Value Priming On Hiring Decisions., Helen B. Ofosu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the effect of priming with individualistic or communalistic values on the decision to hire a Black or White job candidate. The experimental design was a 3 (value priming group) x 2 (applicant qualifications) x 2 (gender of participant) factorial. Introductory psychology students read and responded to an individualistic, a communalistic, or a neutral values survey. Half the participants then read profiles of two equally qualified job candidates, one Black and one White. Unequal qualifications condition participants read profiles of a Black and a relatively better qualified White candidate. Participants then indicated whom they would hire and …

Factors Affecting The Acceptability Of Assisted Suicide., Gayle. Vincent Jan 1995

Factors Affecting The Acceptability Of Assisted Suicide., Gayle. Vincent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current research was to contribute to the debate on assisted suicide by describing: (1) circumstances under which assisted suicide is regarded as an acceptable option, and (2) personal characteristics that mediate acceptance of assisted suicide. Participants rated scenarios constructed in a factorial design based on the presence (versus absence) of the following factors: terminal illness, physical incapacitation, severe pain, mental incapacitation, and an expressed wish to die. Contrary to the proposed hypotheses, each of these variables alone increased the acceptance of assisted suicide, regardless of whether or not a wish to die had been expressed. Further, …

The Relationship Between Communication And Cohesion In Inter-Collegiate Rugby Players., Philip Joseph. Sullivan Jan 1995

The Relationship Between Communication And Cohesion In Inter-Collegiate Rugby Players., Philip Joseph. Sullivan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study was undertaken to examine the relationship between communication and cohesion in inter-collegiate rugby players. Communication in many social systems has been found to be intimately related to other aspects of the group's functionality, including how affiliative or cohesive they are. Certain dimensions of communication are believed to facilitate a cohesive group, including interactions which are honest, supportive, open and direct. This style of communication has been labelled healthy communication. Because of the similarity between sports teams and families and the proven relationship between sport-specific communication patterns and cohesion, it was hypothesized that certain dimensions of communication would be …
