Influence Of Hue Temple Architecture On The Thai Hoa Palace In The Royal Citadel, Angunthip Srisuwan, Pham Dang Nhat Thai

Asian Review

The historical city of Hue in central Vietnam retains the imprint of the Nguyen Era (1802-1945), when many temples were built and restored. This paper examines the influence of architectural features of the Thai Hoa Palace in the royal citadel on the main shrines of Hue temples. This study is based on field surveys of square-enclosure Khau ( ) temples in Hue city, which share similar styles of "double house, one foundation," "one poem, one-drawing," two-layered roof structures, and symbols of decorative motifs at the corner of the roof. The design of the royal palace closely followed the design of …

Achieving Access To Health For Mobile Populations Through Community Health Systems On The Thai-Myanmar Border, Cynthia Maung, Tara Russell 2015 Chulalongkorn University

Achieving Access To Health For Mobile Populations Through Community Health Systems On The Thai-Myanmar Border, Cynthia Maung, Tara Russell

Asian Review

Over the past two decades, communities in the border areas of Tak Province, Thailand, and in neighboring districts of Myanmar, have established a primary healthcare system. Conflict, displacement and institutional neglect have left this region of Eastern Myanmar without functioning public health services. Forced displacement and statelessness excluded these same communities from health services in Thailand. This paper presents two short case studies that describe how the network prioritizes access to basic care at the village level, with ethnic and community organizations training village health workers to provide health education and to manage common diseases. More serious cases are referred …

SMU Press Releases and News

The Singapore Management University (SMU) has more reasons to celebrate in Singapore’s golden jubilee year, besides SMU’s 15th anniversary – it saw the inaugural batch of graduates from the first-of-its-kind SMU Warriors Scholarship (SWS) ahead of Singapore’s 50th National Day. These ‘warriors’ are retiring Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel, aged around 50, who commenced SMU postgraduate studies last year and completed their studies this year. Four of the ‘warrior’ graduates celebrate their 50th birthday with the nation this year.

Arts institutions and artistes thrive in an ecological system of supporters and facilitators. They enable artistes to focus their attention and energy on practice and teaching of the art forms and on creating new productions. They enable institutions to slowly grow and attain self-sustainability in the long run by subsidising expenses on housing, productions, and fees of visiting artistes. They also provide a platform for students to perform and to improve through competition. Students also benefit from scholarships for advanced study. In this chapter, we describe briefly the roles played by various enablers of Indian performing art forms over the …

How The Russian Orthodox Church Views The "Russian World", Thomas Bremer 2015 Münster University, Germany

How The Russian Orthodox Church Views The "Russian World", Thomas Bremer

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The cultural concept of a “Russian world” (Russian: “russkiy mir”) plays an increasingly important role today, and is not limited to political discourse. The Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), which officially joined the “Russian World” foundation in 2009, has frequently referred to Russkiy mir in recent discourse. The term “Russian world” refers to a culture that differentiates itself from Western culture and is superior to it. Despite ROC usage of the term, understanding of Russkiy mir is diffuse. There are still some semantic constants which occur repeatedly. The most significant of these are a) the historical aspect, b) religion or religious …

Orthodox "Imagined Communities" In The Ottoman Balkans, James R. Payton Jr

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

As a young scholar being trained in Early Modern European history, I imbibed unstated assumptions along with the canons of western historiography. My teaching and research career, though, soon moved eastward, to focus on Byzantium, the Balkans, and the Eastern Christianity which permeated both. With this transition, I became uneasily aware of how little attention western scholarship has given to these fields, or to the momentous developments which took place in the eastern half of the European continent. Some of these developments challenge and undermine some hallowed scholarly perspectives; among them is the assessment commonly held among western scholars about …

Based on a random survey sample, the current study examined audience assessments of different media platforms in Pakistan. This study found that in the complex Pakistani media landscape, ethnicity is a key indicator in predicting media credibility. Our study’s results indicate that minority ethnic groups tend to find domestic television to be less credible, and international television or traditional media to be more credible, than do members of the majority Punjabi group. Media reliance was found to be a significant indicator of media credibility assessment — particularly regarding media such as international television and the Internet — as media reliance …

This book has taken us through the fascinating history of the Indian performing arts in Singapore. The development and spectacular growth of the Indian arts in Singapore have mirrored the economic developments in Singapore. From very slow beginnings of the hardworking pioneering artistes, some institutions have grown dramatically and have become landmark cultural institutions, well known to Singaporeans and arts connoisseurs in India, especially the cognoscenti in the cultural capital of Chennai in the South. In the early days prior to independence, both local and new Indian immigrants were starved for opportunities to learn Indian classical music and dance, and …

Is There A Future For The Euro?, Augustine H. H. Tan

Research Collection School Of Economics

A Greek exit could spell the euro zone's disintegration. The Greek referendum last Sunday resoundingly backed its embattled government over its tortuous negotiations with the Troika of the European Central Bank (ECB), the European Union (EU) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Greece is now back at the negotiating table, which may ease the terms of loan repayment and lighten the reforms demanded or it may lead to a Grexit.

Alexander C. T. Geppert, Fleeting Cities: Imperial Expositions In Fin-De-Siècle Europe, Fiona Williamson

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The classical exhibitions of fin-de-siècle Europe were a phenomenon unique to that age. Comprising astonishing feats of engineering, major investment and global participation, such exhibitions (or expositions) have been termed ‘laboratories of urban modernity’ (57) and ‘enterprises of national importance’ (202). Geppert’s ambitious and detailed comparative analysis of five protean exhibitions, or ‘cities within the city’ (221), staged in Berlin, London and Paris between 1896 and 1931, draws on the growing literature on space and place, and transnational and entangled networks. Exhibits such as native villages and historic city recreations, he explains, enabled visitors to pursue an imaginary journey through …

A Curious Study Of China, Sana Khalil

Business Review

China seems well-positioned in terms of innovation output; nonetheless, have underperformed with regards to innovation input which presents a very curious case for study. I investigate the determinants of China's cross-regional innovation output and link the variations in innovation output with the level of economic development. Using panel dataset from 31 regions of China, I show that the differences in China's regional innovation output can significantly be explained by variations in R&D manpower and expenditure, share of highly educated students, and public education spending. Additionally, domestic patent stock, high-tech export share and output value of new products are positively and …
