Animated films from the Arab world hardly ever make it into cinemas in Japan, Europe or the United States, or onto the festival circuit (Van de Peer, 2017). The purpose of this research is to study the Arabic animation film industry from the point of view of its producers. Also, this study examines the reasons of the weakness of the Arabic animation films and the possible causes of the absence of the Arabic animation films from the world stage. This qualitative study has sought to understand the Arabic animator's perceptions of the Arabic animation film industry, and where is it …

The Whole World In His Hands: What A Qibla Indicator Illuminates About Islamic Community In Sixteenth-Century Ottoman Turkey, Meghan Doyle
Global Tides
In the sixteenth century, at a time of Ottoman rule and production in modern-day Turkey, qibla indicators were ubiquitous objects, used to assist faithful Muslims in finding the direction to Mecca. A particularly well-preserved qibla indicator in the British Museum allows for an inquiry into how these objects were used, bridging the gap between folk astronomy and scientific geography. Applying contemporary theories of belongingness to the composition and function of the qibla indicator reveals the psychological effect this object may have had on members of the Islamic community. Ultimately, what the qibla indicator may lack in geographical accuracy it more …

Arab Citizens’ Perceptions Of The Investigative Journalism, Ahmed Makharesh
Student Theses and Dissertations
Investigative journalism has a significant history in the United States (Bebawi, 2016). Operating under a free press protected by the first amendment, investigative journalism flourished in the early years of the U.S. As the marketplace began to dictate practices among journalists, investigative journalism has at times been very active and at other times the marketplace has restricted investigative journalists because of cost. Investigative journalism has been a hallmark of major television networks in the U.S. and Europe. However, investigative journalism in other parts of the world is often restricted, not by the marketplace but by government policies. This study seeks …

The ETM and ALCE testing: Summer internship in Clark labs
Wenle Jiang
This paper is a description of my internship with Clark Labs in the summer of 2017. I worked as research assistant responsible for testing the Earth Trends Modeler and the American Land Change Explorer. Earth Trends Modeler is a revolutionary earth observation tool that allows for the modeling and analysis of earth trends and ecosystem dynamics. The American Land Change Explorer (ALCE) is a free web application designed to illustrate the potential of predictive land change modeling using a subscription-based service called the American Land Change Modeler …

Seabird Distribution And Oil & Gas Potential Along The Northern Sea Route, Russia: An Arctic Marine Conservation Case Study, Meghan Kelly
Sustainability and Social Justice
Seabirds are indicator species for the marine environment. Their populations are simultaneously affected by access to food resources and anthropogenic pressures including direct disturbance and habitat degradation associated with industrial development (Parsons et al. 2007). Therefore, using seabird distribution as a policy-relevant indicator for the Arctic marine environment supports an ecosystem based management approach aimed at protecting sensitive habitats from increased offshore oil and gas development.
This research identifies seabird habitat in the Russian Arctic utilizing in situ seabird observations from the Northern Sea Route to create a species distribution model. The spatial location of these areas will be compared …

Sustainability and Social Justice
The purpose of this study is to describe the knowledge shared by youth development staff in an NGO in Cape Town about the impact of violence on youth development work. Through five open ended interviews and review of organizational materials, the study uses a narrative and feminist intersectionality analytic to asks how Educo has and could use the critical race theory method of counter-storytelling to subvert the normalization and perpetuation of interpersonal and structural violence. The paper demonstrates how the knowledge and expertise of the people in the organization, as they respond violence youth face, is not valued by funders …

Commodification And Resistance: Migrant Labor In Jordan, Matthew Walleser
Sustainability and Social Justice
Neoliberal globalization, which has guided the economic system of the world for the last forty years, claims to offer opportunities for equality and wealth for all citizens. However, I argue that the structural violence inherent in the neoliberal system and its drive for maximizing profits leads to cycles of abuse and discrimination, as well as a transfer of wealth and power toward elites and away from average citizens. I discuss how Jordan, like other developing countries, has been a locus for this violence. Through the lens of migrant workers within Jordan, this research paper traces the effects of these policies …

Southeastern Tanzanian Benedictine Monasteries: Filling A Void Of Governmental Services For The Poorest Regions, John Christie-Searles
Dissertations
This research illuminates the partnership of a particular civil society actor, Benedictine monasteries, in achieving developmental goals and delivery outcomes for education and health in Tanzania. Faith based organizations (FBOs) like these Benedictine monasteries quietly persevered with their work. These monasteries without governmental support were able to achieve similar results in areas of Tanzania deprived of infrastructure and consistent governmental administrative attention.
Monastic apostolate fervor is similar to the professionalism exhibited by international aid organizations and nongovernmental organizations in their desire to meet the needs of the poor. Motivations are complex and varied from evangelization to political and strategic agendas …

Multiple episodes of dispossession and displacement characterize the lives of landless rural and semi-rural families across El Salvador. The residents of 30 de Abril, a semi-rural community in El Salvador formed from displaced families, engaged in a five-year struggle to force the government to make good on its promise of land to the rural poor. Now, with legal titles in hand, residents continue to work together to seek additional services and resources for their community, proving their resilience in the face of displacement. Based upon the experience of 30 de Abril, this paper explores the trajectory of one community‟s struggle …

Public commitments by political leaders to fast-track economic integration in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) have been at variance with the extremely slow pace of domesticating the 2009 SADC Central Bank Model Law. This paper identifies specific legislative gaps in the national central bank laws that member states need to address in order to enhance institutional uniformity and promote central bank independence in the SADC region. Countries with recent amendments have made adjustments for more compliance, while others have not done so. The paper recommends that member states should speedily effect the needed legislative alignments if the frequently delayed …

Transfer Mispricing In Africa: Contextual Issues, Edna Kabala, Manenga Ndulo
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
Transfer pricing is a significant tax issue and lies at the core of international trade and globalisation. This brief raises contextual issues and challenges surrounding the experience of transfer mispricing in Africa. The brief comes at a time when African countries have consistently exhibited high real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rates in the past two decades, and increased FDI inflows and technological upgrades have aided their high participation in global trade. Despite the profitability of MNEs operations in Africa, the investing firms are paying less in terms of tax. This has created a problem for African countries to raise …
