K-Pop live is a social networking and language learning platform developed by an undergraduate student team from Singapore Management University. K-Pop live aims to combine social media together with gamification to promote Korean culture. It consolidates all relevant Tweets from Twitter as well as videos from YouTube. The platform allows the user to connect with his friends who share similar interests in terms of K-pop artists and music.

In this article I report findings of research into the lives and work of Mainland Chinese teachers of English in a broader context characterized by market economic reform. I draw on transcriptions of group interviews to describe and discuss teachers’ lives and work, and forward a critical analysis that posits a connection between teachers’ accounts and the re-structuring of social relations in post-Mao China. The article details one of several themes treated in the study, specifically the broad category of ‘effects of educational reform.’ I suggest that the compliance and resistance apparent in these accounts reveals Chinese teachers to be …

With Nepal's recent transition to state secularism, the politicization of Muslim religious identity has emerged with increasing vitality. One particular pan-Nepali Muslim organization, the Rastriya Muslim Mane Nepal (National Muslim Forum Nepal), offers a window into the complex relationship between national and religious identity that animates this politicization. Through analysis of the National Muslim Forum's earliest discourses, produced between 2005 and 2006, both immediately before and after the people's revolution that resulted in the declaration of Nepal as a secular state, this essay highlights the ways that experiences of conflict coupled with a national political transition shape and contribute to …

This paper argues that commercialization of indigenous cultures may contribute to their continued survival. This is based on the findings from a case study in Ifugao, Philippines. Because of various factors like the conversion to Christianity, the adaptation of national systems of government and education, and the introduction of international mass media, the indigenous Ifugao cultural practices are vanishing. In an attempt to revive these practices, the municipal and provincial governments in Ifugao are arranging annual festivals showcasing indigenous culture. This dissertation interrogates the assertion in postcolonial scholarship, especially from the work of Homi Bhabha that the construction and performance of hybrid identities act as a form of resistance for marginalized communities against structures of oppression. While this study supports this assertion, it also critiques how hybridity fails to address issues of unequal power relations. This has led to an uncritical use of hybridity that reproduces the very idea of static identity which its proponents claim to transcend.

Countries that come out of the "gray zone" during "third wave democratization," as ambiguous as they may seem politically, may not be a manifestation of a failed democratization attempt. Rather, their "hybrid" characteristics, portraying neither a full democracy nor outright authoritarian practices entrenched in the system, may plausibly serve as a panacea to governing, especially in a troubled state.

This dissertation aims at integrating two scholarships: state-society relation studies and Chinese foreign policy analysis. I created Two-level Perception Gap Model to analyze different intellectual groups' relations with party-state by confirming Chinese intellectuals play a role in CFP making in general, China's Japan policy in particular. This model is an alternative approach, instead of conventional wisdom patron-client approach, to explain and analyze the pluralized intellectual-state relations in China. This paper examines the role of ASEAN in the resolution of territorial conflicts between its member states. It studies the border dispute cases of Vietnam-Cambodia and Indonesia-Malaysia, before turning its focus to the Thai-Cambodian conflict over Preah Vihear (Phra Wihan).1 The domestic political contexts in both countries provided important reasons for the weak role ASEAN has been able to play. But the associations struggle to find a meaningful place in dispute settlement is not limited to Preah Vihear, and it will likely continue as long as member states are unwilling to make use of the mechanisms they once created. The South China Sea has sea lanes of global significance, rich fishing grounds, and potentially vast oil and gas reserves. ASEAN members arc in conflict over Chinas claims in the area, but are working towards a binding code of conduct. Unity within ASEAN and continued diplomatic efforts will be essential to preventing disputes leading to armed conflict. By solving its internal inconsistencies and achieving stability, ASEAN will be able to promote its centrality in the region's security architecture as well as its importance in the global arena.
