This paper investigates the location of precontact Chippewa contacts and the complexities of the geographic environment in which they occurred. Reconstructed land use and settlement maps along with recent archaeological and linguistic research have added new ideas concerning the origin, early migrations, and contacts of the Chippewa Indians. Very little is known about the culture and the area that the Chippewa occupied before the time of European influence. Although the location of large urban centers such as Seoul, Pusan, and Taegu has had a major impact on changes in the surrounding agricultural hinterland, regional differences of agricultural development in Korea have not received much attention until recently (Fig. 1). Keidel, for example, noted that Kyongi-do and Kyongsangnam-do have higher agricultural income levels than the remainder of the country because they produce commercial crops for Seoul and Pusan, respectively.1 More recently, after the construction of a modern highway between these two cities, Chungchongbuk-do and Kyongsangbuk-do provinces emerged as the major suppliers of commercial crops for Seoul and Pusan. In the early 1960's Bolivia made the first set of attempts at colonization of the lowlands, or Oriente, lying east of the Andes. This effort was largely in response to events that had taken place earlier in the century, namely the Chaco War, the Social Revolution of 1952 and the collapse of the mining economy.1 Colonization schemes were implemented in an attempt to provide enough land for the people, increase opportunities for displaced miners, and to promote national unity by settling the eastern areas of the nation.2 The early colonization projects were concentrated in two areas -the Alto Beni (east …

Creation and preservation of affluent suburban communities is dependent upon the existence of political expedients, whose primary function is to insure perpetuation of exclusionary socioeconomic barriers. Local land-use policies, as determined by municipal zoning regulations and building codes, have become mechanisms by which the status quo is maintained. The content of local land-use policies is particularly susceptible to political influence of community pressure groups. PreCipitation efficiency (Pe) is the percentage of the average atmospheric water vapor above a station that is released and falls to earth as measurable preCipitation in a given time period. Pe is a single parameter describing the efficiency of atmospheric mechanisms in releasing moisture. Temporal and spatial variations in Pe are controlled primarily by synoptic atmospheric systems. The relationship between atmospheric systems and seasonal! annual variations in Pe is investigated for the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. Once upon a time in the land of academia, there existed an esteemed Department of Geography. It was steeped in tradition and was recognized by its peers as being among the foremost academic departments in the world. Yet this recognition was inadequate to spare it from an abrupt termination. This Department of Geography whose allegiance was once claimed by such notable geographers as Carl Sauer, Preston James, George Kish and others was sentenced to extinction by the Board of Regents on June 19, 1981. Policy frameworks increasingly portray energy transition as a mechanism for achieving a range of resilience- related goals, including socio-economic development and energy security. Energy transition is often character ized as a particularly important resilience strategy for lower-income states in the Global South, which face the simultaneous challenges of decarbonization and development. Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ) was a field campaign aimed at better understanding the impact of wildfires and agricultural fires on air quality and climate. The FIREX-AQ campaign took place in August 2019 and involved two aircraft and multiple coordinated satellite observations. This study applied and evaluated a self-supervised machine learning (ML) method for the active fire and smoke plume identification and tracking in the satellite and sub-orbital remote sensing datasets collected during the campaign.
