Developing The Refined Sexual Shame Inventory: Validation Study Of The Kyle Inventory Of Sexual Shame, Jang Soon Lim

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There has been an increase in a need to provide appropriate assessments and treatments for sexual shame associated with pornography use, a dysfunctional result of the development of the Internet and social network services. There is no clinically validated inventory of sexual shame in the literature, while many active studies of shame have recently produced meaningful results. This study aimed to develop a brief measure of sexual shame based on the Kyle Inventory of Sexual Shame (KISS) that has not truly been validated with multiple samples. Initial Development And Validation Of The Multidimensional Strong Black Woman Scale, Brandi Janee' Chamberlin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The unique experiences of African American women are well documented through intersectionality research. Taking an intersectional framework, this study is designed to develop and initially validate a new scale, the Multidimensional Strong Black Woman Scale. The Strong Black Woman is characterized by strength, resilience, independence, stoicism, and caretaking. This schema is adopted by many African American women to combat negative racial stereotypes, born out of slavery and discrimination. The Strong Black Woman often neglects her own mental and physical health in order to care for others, and delays help-seeking behaviors. This has a negative impact on mental health. The strong …

Attachment And Burnout: Exploring The Predictive Nature Of Self-Efficacy In A Sample Of Direct-Care Staff Members, Eric Jason Camden 2019 Liberty University

Attachment And Burnout: Exploring The Predictive Nature Of Self-Efficacy In A Sample Of Direct-Care Staff Members, Eric Jason Camden

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The push for least-restrictive care and associated policies has increased the prevalence of youth with higher levels of acuity requiring admission to residential treatment centers. This increased psychiatric severity of children and adolescents served in residential centers places the largest burden on direct-care staff members. As a result, direct-care staff members experience workplace stressors such as staff-member shortages/unplanned call-outs, poor morale, high stress, and burnout. Burnout is widely recognized as a significant hazard for professional caregivers and is a potent barrier to clinical effectiveness. Extant literature on burnout examines individual and organizational factors that lead to burnout experiences, and this …

Master’S-Level Counseling Students’ Experience Of Expressive Arts Techniques In A Cacrep Multicultural Counseling Course, Cameron Houin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Counseling governing bodies have defined what should be prioritized in multicultural counseling courses, including students’ multicultural knowledge and awareness; however, best practice regarding how to teach these multicultural concepts has largely been left up to the counselor educator. Counselor educators have begun implementing expressive arts techniques in the classroom, but very little literature exists related to using such techniques in a multicultural course in a manner that positively influence counseling students’ multicultural competency.

The purpose of this study was to explore master’s-level counseling students’ experience of expressive arts techniques utilized during their multicultural counseling course. Ten student participants took part …

The Job Interview Self-Presentation Tendencies And Experiences Of Latina Undergraduate Students, Nichole Shada 2019 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The Job Interview Self-Presentation Tendencies And Experiences Of Latina Undergraduate Students, Nichole Shada

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the United States, self-promotion during a job interview is not just common, it is expected (Paulhus, Westlake, Calvez, & Harms, 2013). Job applicants are encouraged to inform potential employers about the qualifications, strengths, and professional accomplishments that make them the best fit for the job, which requires applicants to engage in self-promotion during the job interview. Literature has begun to suggest that sociocultural factors such as gender or culture may influence an individual’s propensity to engage in modesty as opposed to self-promotion in career-related contexts like the job interview. However, few studies have explored how these sociocultural factors interact …

Investigating A Mental Health Literacy Intervention Among Economically Disadvantaged Youth, Jayna Mumbauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Mental health is a critical and pervasive issue for children and adolescents in the United States, with one in five youth living with a diagnosable mental health condition (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Mental health literacy is the knowledge and beliefs surrounding mental health that guide recognition, management, and prevention (Jorm, 1997, p. 143). Mental health literacy is a particularly important framework for youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds as they face increased vulnerabilities to …

The Lines Between The Checkboxes : The Experiences Of Racially Ambiguous People Of Color, Tyce Nadrich

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The influences of race on people’s lived experiences are vast and enumerable. Despite advancements in multicultural counseling literature, the experiences of racially ambiguous people of color, or persons who do not align with preexisting ideas about race (Brown & Brown, 2004; James &Tucker, 2003; Young, Sanchez, & Wilton, 2013), are relatively unknown. Further, the racially ambiguous experience is often conflated with persons of mixed-race heritage (Young, Sanchez, & Wilton, 2013). The goal of this dissertation study was to understand the lived experiences of racially ambiguous people of color. Participants identifying as racially ambiguous were recruited to discuss their lived experiences. …

Grief And Loss: Supportive Stories For Children With Autism, Danielle Kirsten Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of grief on children with autism is an under-researched area of study. Until recently, it was often assumed that individuals with autism did not have the capacity to grieve. Bibliotherapy is offered as supportive strategy for bereaved children, providing them with structure and guidance through a time of uncertainty and change. This study is based on two focus groups, one with teachers of children with autism …

Animal Heads: Exploring Christian Themed Solutions And Mental Health Through Comics, Mariannette Oyola-Perez 2019 Liberty University

Animal Heads: Exploring Christian Themed Solutions And Mental Health Through Comics, Mariannette Oyola-Perez

Masters Theses

The second leading cause of death for the ages of 10-24 is suicide, a statistic that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows has steadily risen since 1999. Although it is seldom spoken about in mental health circles, an enmity seems to exist between Christianity and modern psychology in regards to mental illness and how it should be treated; this enmity could be preventing helpful Christian-based principles from being shared with the at-risk population while simultaneously excluding Christians from a conversation they need to be a part of.

Interestingly, further research shows that the at-risk demographic overlaps significantly with …

Additionally, an extensive review of the literature has found there have been no qualitative studies examining experiential groups co-facilitated by a course instructor and a doctoral student. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to …

Discrimination and racism are factors identified in those studies, however, there is little research on the experiences of Black women in graduate programs and the impact of racial microaggressions on them.

The purpose of this study was to examine Black female graduate students’ experiences of …

Integrating Multicultural Discussions In Counseling Supervision: A Grounded Theory Study, Zoricelis Davila 2019 Liberty University

Integrating Multicultural Discussions In Counseling Supervision: A Grounded Theory Study, Zoricelis Davila

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There is sufficient evidence that supports the ethical responsibility supervisors have to facilitate multicultural discussions through the integration of cultural topics in the supervisory session. Unfortunately, it is reported that supervisors who feel inadequate addressing cultural issues tend to ignore and not integrate such discussions. This lack of competence leads to the frustration and dissatisfaction of supervisees, which in turn impacts counseling practice. A dearth of information exists about the process that counseling supervisors follow to integrate multicultural topics in supervision. Further, there is limited evidence about the action and interaction between the supervisor and supervisee leading to the integration …
