Counselor Education Syllabi

This course provides an opportunity for the student counselor to begin to develop and refine their individual and group counseling skills within the functional milieu of a clinical or school setting. All practicum activities are closely supervised by university and field-based supervisors. Prior to entry into the course, all students must provide to the instructor verification of having current professional liability insurance.

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the etiology and classification of mental disorders as defined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR). Students will learn to utilize diagnostic information to facilitate the initiation and implementation of case management strategies, treatment plan development, and therapeutic intervention with people seeking/receiving mental health counseling services. Instructional methodology will include lectures, case studies presented in class, diagnosis and treatment planning activities using dyadic and small group activities, and other instructional modalities designed to facilitate the learning process.

The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of motivational interviewing (MI) group counseling in enhancing intrinsic motivation and academic engagement among students at State Senior High School 2 Sragen, Indonesia. Students with low intrinsic motivation and academic engagement often display a lack of attention during learning activities, disinterest in school, use of cell phones for non-academic purposes during study time, and failure to complete assigned tasks. Identifying mental health issues is essential, necessitating an instrument to assess adolescent mental health. This study aims to adapt the Arabic Scale of Mental Health (ASMH) into Indonesian and evaluate its validity using the Rasch model. This study aims to develop a metaverse-based Virtual Reality Counseling (VRC) medium to support psychological services for students with special needs. The research method used is the research and development method with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The results show that the metaverse-based VRC medium has met the media acceptability aspects, making it feasible for effective implementation. Additionally, experimental results indicate a decrease in the levels of mental health disorders experienced by the counselees after undergoing individual counseling assisted by the metaverse-based VRC medium. Abstract Background Emerging biomarker technologies (e.g., MRI, EEG, digital phenotyping, eye-tracking) have potential to move the identification of autism into the first year of life. We investigated the perspectives of parents about the anticipated utility and impact of predicting later autism diagnosis from a biomarker-based test in infancy. Methods Parents of infants were interviewed to ascertain receptiveness and perspectives on early (6-12 months) prediction of autism using emerging biomarker technologies. One group had experience parenting an older autistic child (n=30), and the other had no prior autism parenting experience (n=25). Nontraditional educational settings (NES) cater to diverse student populations, including those considered at-potential or at-risk. Research on interventions and the role of helping professionals in these settings is limited. This dissertation comprises two studies aimed at elucidating interventions and support mechanisms for at-potential students in NES, alongside exploring the role of school counselors in fostering their holistic development. Gatekeeping is an essential function within counselor education that is aimed at helping counselors in training (CIT) achieve competency to practice. There is a lack of research focused on understanding gatekeepers’ experiences, including how they resolve challenges. The purpose of this hermeneutic study was to understand the lived experiences of gatekeepers in counselor education, including gatekeeping challenges and how they are addressed in the training system. There were five emerging themes with eight subthemes. The findings highlight how gatekeeping is vital, cannot be done in isolation, and how individuals learn from their experiences. Relational Cultural theory (RCT) as a pedagogy in counselor education and supervision (CES) uniquely positions educators and learners for growth through vulnerability and authenticity. The authors in this article share their individual journeys with RCT along with practical strategies for implementing RCT as a pedagogy in an asynchronous digitally delivered counselor education program. The purpose of this study was to assess the journal article publications accrued by a recent cohort of counselor educators (N = 376) over the first ten years since attaining their doctoral degrees. After ten years, these counselor educators had accrued a median of three journal article publications. There were not any clear trends in publications over the first ten years since degree completion except for an upper trend in publication counts for counselor educators at R1 universities. Professional school counselors in Texas responded to a questionnaire about training received and their needs concerning preparedness to identify and work with youth exposed to child sex trafficking (CST). The study utilized a convergent parallel mixed methods design. Quantitative results indicated many participants did not find that their graduate degree program prepared them to work with CST and less than half felt their school and/or district provided adequate training opportunities. Limited research exists on implementation of Fink’s learning Taxonomy in counselor education curriculum. ACA and IAMFC codes of ethics center culturally-affirming lifespan development skills as professional identity responsibilities specific to counselors. Despite the critical importance of lifespan, the training of CITs in this area is inadequate and grounded in research based on homogeneous samples and discriminatory practices. Counselor education is deeply in need of a lifespan curriculum that reflects diverse populations. The updated lifespan curriculum must be inclusive and consider the impact of context and culture on lifespan development. In this conceptual article, we call on counseling faculty to infuse updated developmental science with clinical skills development across their plans of study.
