International students significantly enrich U.S. counselor education and supervision programs by contributing diverse cultural perspectives that inspire teaching, research, and professional growth. Yet, these students often face complex challenges including cultural adjustment, language barriers, social isolation, and the academic demands of counseling academic programs that impact their educational outcome s and psychological well-being. Systemic barriers, such as visa restrictions and institutional unawareness, further complicate their experiences. This study explored acculturation experiences of international students enrolled in CACREP-accredited counselor education programs in the United States.

Approximately two-thirds of the United States population experience Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) that are associated with increased risk for negative physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. Research on the effects of ACEs is largely conducted and published outside of counseling fields, yet has direct implications for counselors in the conceptualization, assessment, and interventions for a variety of complaints presented by clients across the lifespan and in any treatment setting. In the present study, we examined several variables related to school counselors working with students who experienced traumas. We studied the prevalence of traumas reported by students and by school characteristics, school counselors’ trainings on trauma-informed practices, and the relationships between organizational predictors and school counselors’ perceived trauma-informed practices in their schools. Participants were 278 practicing school counselors. Highlights of the various findings included: school counselors, on average, worked with students who reported 11 types of traumas, several trauma types were more- or less-often reported by students based upon the organizational variables of school district type and grade levels, and …

This transcendental phenomenological study delves into the lived experiences of 10 women who experienced sex trafficking. Through in-depth individual interviews, participants unveiled a narrative marked by coercion, manipulation, and multifaceted abuse. Despite variations in the duration and onset of their ordeals, participants uniformly expressed the profound and lasting impact of sex trafficking across numerous facets of their lives. Psychological distress, physical ailments, disrupted vocational trajectories, strained relationships, and spiritual upheaval were recurrent themes, illustrating the pervasive nature of their trauma. Nonsuicidal self-injury conversations can occur under veiled discussions,whether online or in-person, due to stigmatized emotions associated with self-harm. Previous studies addressednonsuicidal self-injury on Reddit, yet do not specifically address emotions expressed within posts. The present study assessed emotional discourse in 996 subreddit posts about self-harm engagement and related circumstances, through an inductive, thematic analysis design. Emotions consisted of four identified themes: (a) lonely and looking for belonging on Reddit, (b) despair and exhaustion trying to stop the behavior, (c) humiliated and scared after disclosure to in-person supports, and (d) thankful for subreddit support. Background: Major depression places psychological strain on the individual that may increase the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Though the use of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs) is widespread in clinical practice, its effect on the prevention of RA incidents is still unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the association between CHMs use by patients with depression and their subsequent risk of being diagnosed with RA.

Using explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, we investigated counseling student outcomes and attitudes in asynchronous versus synchronous learning modalities. We studied whether asynchronous or synchronous learning contributed to differences in student outcomes on a final project in an Advanced Human Growth and Development course. Using a Kruskal-Wallis H test, we found no significant differences on final project scores among groups categorized according to the number of asynchronous and synchronous activities completed. We also explored the attitudes of online counseling students towards synchronous and asynchronous learning. Counselor educators (CE) prepare counselor education doctoral students (CEDS) to work as counselors, scholars, leaders, supervisors, and teachers. While we have a firm understanding of how CEDS develop in general (Limberg et al., 2013; Moss et al., 2014), there is little known about how they develop specifically as teachers. The goal of this research study was to gain insight into how teacher identity develops for CEDS. We interviewed 10 participants using transcendental phenomenology methodology to gain insight into their teaching preparation experiences and identities as teachers. Duty And Inequality: A Thematic Analysis Of Muslim Sexual Trauma Counselors, Mitchell Waters, Waleed Sami

In this qualitative study, the experiences of four practicing Muslim counselors who specialize in the treatment of sexual trauma were examined. By collecting data with semi-structured interviews, three distinct themes emerged: a) embodied inequality, b) theodicy and ambivalence, and c) Islamic integration and the therapeutic relationship. The findings of this study highlight the inequalities many Muslim counselors embody while balancing engagement in traditional counseling work. Implications for counselor educators and supervisors that enhance multicultural competence and improve counseling outcomes are provided.

The COVID-19 pandemic created challenging circumstances for many counselors-in-training. In this study, researchers used a qualitative phenomenological design to explore eight master’s counseling students’ experiences navigating multiple roles, including graduate student and caregiver, during the pandemic. Themes included the many ways participants’ lives changed, participants’ sense of being pulled in many directions simultaneously, and factors that added to or mitigated the strain of navigating multiple life roles during a public health crisis. Site supervisors play a vital role in training clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) students during their field work. While clear roles and responsibilities for site supervision is a professional and ethical requirement, the scope of these expectations remains ambiguous. This article provides baseline empirical data on the expectations of sites and site supervisors communicated through field experience handbooks of CACREP-accredited CMHC programs. The authors completed a qualitative content analysis that resulted in three key categories including Site and Site Supervisor Administrative Expectations, Clinical Supervision, and Site/Program Interaction. Implications for counseling programs and future research are discussed.

Gatekeeping is a responsibility for all counselor educators (CEs). Little is known about how CEs work with their colleagues to enact gatekeeping in counselor education programs. This grounded theory study explored 12 diverse CEs’ gatekeeping experiences, creating an ecological model of the Faculty Microsystem during gatekeeping that illuminates important conditions, processes, and interactions during gatekeeping in counselor education. Implications for counselor educators and doctoral students on the nature of collaboration during gatekeeping are described.

Counselors working in a wide variety of settings should be competent in providing grief counseling. The current CACREP (2024) standards include grief education under lifespan development, but grief education can be woven throughout all eight domains of the foundational counseling curriculum. This article explains the foundational grief counseling concepts of attachment theory, the dual process model of grief, meaning-making theory, and adaptive grieving styles. Included in this article are suggestions for infusing these foundational grief counseling concepts into each of the eight CACREP foundational counseling curriculum areas.

Although advances in neuroscience validate the therapeutic practices and professional identity of counselors, educators struggle to infuse accurate neuroscience knowledge into the classroom. Utilizing a quasi-experimental, repeated measures design, this study examined the effectiveness of a neuro-informed lecture in reducing neuromyth endorsement among graduate students enrolled in the counseling theories course. Participants (n = 62) completed a demographics questionnaire and identical neuroscience pre- and post-surveys. The intervention group (n = 32) received the lecture-based intervention, while those in the comparison group (n = 30) did not. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and antidepressant medications are often used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). After examining the existing research on the treatment of MDD, a study was conducted using a vignette methodology to determine if there is a decreased rate of symptoms for patients who are currently being treated for MDD by a mental health professional utilizing CBT and antidepressant interventions.
