This presentation provides the talking points from a discussion on the Middle East, Russian “Siege and Starve” tactics, and the need to recognize agriculture as a U.S. national security issue. Presented to the Cattleman’s Association on February 21, 2022; two days prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Nebraska has a history of cooperatives in agriculture. The most common types are agricultural marketing and supply cooperatives. The Nebraska Cooperative Council map highlights that there are over 400 cooperative locations in Nebraska. In addition to agricultural cooperatives, such as Ag Processing, Inc. and Producers Livestock Marketing Association, there are also cooperative credit unions and the Nebraska Rural Radio Association.

Fungi that bind leaf litter into mats and produce white-rot via degradation of lignin and other aromatic compounds influence forest nutrient cycling and soil fertility. Extent of white-rot litter mats formed by basidiomycete fungi in Puerto Rico decreased in response to disturbances—a simulated hurricane treatment executed by canopy trimming and debris addition in 2014, a drought in 2015, a treefall, and two hurricanes 10 days apart in September 2017. Percent fungal litter mat cover ranged from 0.4% after Hurricanes Irma and Maria to a high of 53% in forest with undisturbed canopy prior to the 2017 hurricanes, with means mostly …

Background: Most studies on the environmental impacts of agriculture have attempted to measure environmental impacts but have not assessed the ability of the sector to reduce or mitigate such impacts. Only a few studies have examined greenhouse gas emissions from the sector. This paper assesses the ability of states in the U.S. to reduce agricultural emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, two major greenhouse gases (GHGs) with important global warming potential.

Sustainable agricultural practices are the best solution to resolve widespread degradation of agricultural land in Indonesia. However, application of this practices in Indonesia are still very limited. Many empirical studies show that private agricultural land is an incentive that encourages farmers to apply sustainable agricultural practices. This research aimed to analyze relationship between agricultural land ownership and adoption of sustainable agriculture practices. The main data source used is 2017 Food Crop Cost Structure Survey. OLS and 2SLS methods are applied to estimate impact of agricultural land ownership. Regression results indicate that private land motivates farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices.

Poverty is multidimensional and has a close relationship with food insecurity. By using the Alkire-Foster MPI with four dimensions (monetary, health, education, basic infrastructure), it was found that the monetary dimension has a role and contributes to multidimensional poverty although it’s not the main factor. The causes of poverty are obtained from other dominant dimensions. Meanwhile, the portrait of household food security in North Kalimantan Province in aggregate has been classified into food security category. It is concluded that poverty affects food security. This study proves that multidimensional poor households are very likely to become food insecurity households.

Using a discrete choice experiment, our study investigates consumer preferences for different levels of pesticide use in organic, integrated pest management, and Conventional production methods. An online survey of fresh tomato purchases was conducted in Missouri in the fall of 2021. Fresh tomatoes were selected because tomatoes grown using various production methods are currently being sold at farm stands, farmers' markets, supermarkets, natural stores, or even online in Missouri.
