Real-Time Water Decision Support Services For Droughts, Tingting Zhao, Barbara Minsker, Jong Lee, Fernando Salas, David R. Maidment, Cedric David

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Through application of computational methods and an integrated information system, real-time data and river modeling systems can help decision makers identify more effective actions for management practice. The purpose of this study is to develop a real-time decision support model to recommend optimal curtailments during water shortages for decision makers. To enable ease of use and re-use, the workflows (i.e., analysis and model steps) of the real-time decision support model are published as Web services delivered through an internet browser, including model inputs, a published workflow service, and visualized outputs. The model consists of two major components: the real-time river …

Comparison Of Demand Pattern Calibration In Water Distribution Networks With Geographic And Non-Geographic Parameterization, Gerard Sanz, Ramon Perez 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Comparison Of Demand Pattern Calibration In Water Distribution Networks With Geographic And Non-Geographic Parameterization, Gerard Sanz, Ramon Perez

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Demands are one of the most uncertain parameters in a water distribution network model. A good calibration of the model demands leads to better solutions when using the model for any purpose. A demand pattern calibration methodology that uses a priori information has been developed for calibrating the behaviour of demand groups. Generally, the behaviours of demands in cities are mixed all over the network, contrary to smaller villages where demands are clearly sectorised in residential neighbourhoods, commercial zones and industrial sectors. Demand pattern calibration has a final use for leakage detection and isolation. Detecting a leakage in a pattern …

Adaptive Modeling Of Water Supply Networks For Improved Practical Applicability Of Hydraulic Online-Simulation, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Idel Montalvo Arango, Olivier A. Piller, Hervé Ung, Denis Gilbert 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Adaptive Modeling Of Water Supply Networks For Improved Practical Applicability Of Hydraulic Online-Simulation, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Idel Montalvo Arango, Olivier A. Piller, Hervé Ung, Denis Gilbert

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Online-Simulation of water distribution networks allows for estimating the current state of the entire network in near real-time. Measurement data coming from sensors at selected positions in the real network are used for driving a mathematical simulation model. Therefore the information gained from the measurements is extended and covers the whole system. As part of online monitoring or decision support systems online-simulations have multiple applications in operations and control of water supply networks. Although sensors and techniques for data transfer as well as mathematical simulation techniques are highly developed the practical applicability of online-simulations for decision support in large networks …

Meta-Heuristic Versus Gradient-Type Methods For Real Time Demand Calibration In Water Distribution System, Arango Idel Montalvo, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Olivier A. Piller, Christian Kühnert, Mathias Braun 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Meta-Heuristic Versus Gradient-Type Methods For Real Time Demand Calibration In Water Distribution System, Arango Idel Montalvo, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Olivier A. Piller, Christian Kühnert, Mathias Braun

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Water distribution system modeling in real time involves many challenges for water utilities. Calibration of models to match measurements coming from a water network with calculation resulting from models is a necessary step to make models reliable. There are many variables involved in the analysis of a water distribution system and each of them contains a determined level of uncertainties. Nevertheless, in a real time scenario it is significant the impact that water demands at nodes could have compared with other variables. Demands, in contrast to pipe roughness for example, are much more sensitive to changes in time. A better …

A New Alarm Generation Concept For Water Distribution Networks Based On Machine Learning Algorithms, Christian Kühnert, Thomas Bernard, Idel Montalvo Arango, Reik Nitsche

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Water Distribution Networks (WDNs) are critical infrastructures that are exposed to deliberate or accidental chemical, biological or radioactive contamination. A monitoring system capable of protecting a WDN against contamination events in real time is a big challenge needed to be accomplished. Powerful online sensor systems are currently developed and the prototypes are able to detect a small change in water quality. Consequently, the main objective of the project SMaRT-OnlineWDN is the development of an online security management toolkit for WDNs that is based on sensor measurements of water quality as well as water quantity. A new approach for the fast …

A Gradient-Type Method For Real-Time State Estimation Of Water Distribution Networks, Olivier A. Piller, Idel Montalvo, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Denis Gilbert, Mathias Braun, Hervé Ung 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

A Gradient-Type Method For Real-Time State Estimation Of Water Distribution Networks, Olivier A. Piller, Idel Montalvo, Jochen W. Deuerlein, Denis Gilbert, Mathias Braun, Hervé Ung

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Drinking water distribution networks risk exposure to malicious or accidental contamination. Several levels of responses are conceivable. One of them consists to install a sensor network to monitor the system on real time. Once a contamination has been detected, this is also important to take appropriate counter-measures. In the SMaRT-OnlineWDN project, this relies on modeling to predict both hydraulics and water quality. An online model use makes identification of the contaminant source and simulation of the contaminated area possible. The objective of this paper is to present SMaRT-OnlineWDN experience and research results for hydraulic state estimation with sampling frequency of …

Heterogeneous Computing Paradigm For Parallel Water Distribution System Analysis, Zheng Yi Wu 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Heterogeneous Computing Paradigm For Parallel Water Distribution System Analysis, Zheng Yi Wu

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Hydraulic and water quality models have been developed and used over decades for water distribution system (WDS) analysis. The models prove to be powerful tools for engineers to gain systematic understanding on the WDS conditions and conduct technically-sound WDS management. However, it takes significantly amount of computation time to perform one simulation run for large system with tens or hundreds of thousands of pipes over an adequately long period of duration in order to gain good results for system hydraulic and water quality dynamics. In the meantime, WDS analysis solvers are not developed to take the advantages of available computing …

Using A Concurrent Hybrid Method To Optimize Short-Term Operation Of A Multi-Reservoir System With Multiple Objectives, Duan Chen, Arturo Leon, Nathan L. Gibson, Veronika S. Vasylkivska 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Using A Concurrent Hybrid Method To Optimize Short-Term Operation Of A Multi-Reservoir System With Multiple Objectives, Duan Chen, Arturo Leon, Nathan L. Gibson, Veronika S. Vasylkivska

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Combining local search method with evolutionary-based algorithm has been introduced recently to improve performance of optimization on complex multi-objective problems (MOPs). Evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are attractive alternatives for solving the MOPs due to its global scope and independence of problem representation. However, it has been criticized for its relative slow convergence. Studies showed using local search method (LSM) can help to enhance convergence speed of the EA. Incorporating the LSM into the EA can mainly follow two ways: serial and concurrent. Serial approach applied the LSM after complement of the EA by predefining a switching time [1, 2]. The approach …

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Rainfall is one of the key terms involved in many hydrological processes, and it is particularly important in the field of urban hydrology. It is well known that urbanization can have potential impact on precipitation process due to the changes it causes to the ground roughness, thermal-dynamics and many other factors. In this study, the focus is set on the impact on the precipitation patterns in Beijing in term of spatial and temporal variation, from the urbanization over last 50 years in which time the fast and continuous expansion of the city at dramatic scales, the rapid growth of residents …

A New Spatial Interpolation Method Based On Cross-Sections Sampling, Guoxian Huang, Binliang Lin, Jianjun Zhou, Roger Falconer, Qiuwen Chen 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

A New Spatial Interpolation Method Based On Cross-Sections Sampling, Guoxian Huang, Binliang Lin, Jianjun Zhou, Roger Falconer, Qiuwen Chen

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The spatial interpolation results of the channel topography by the different methods have a very important effect on the topographic distribution of river channel. The study shows that the conventional interpolation methods such as TIN, Kriging and IDW methods can give good results with reasonable parameters when the sampling data is dense enough. However, the spatial distribution of source data sampled by the classical cross-section method in hydrological measurement may have large and small spaces along the longitudinal and transverse directions of river channel respectively, and then these interpolation methods above may give the unreasonable interpolation results. In this case, …

Design And Hydraulic Performance Of A Novel Hydraulic Ram Pump, Kailin Yang, Jiazhen Li, Yongxin Guo, Xinlei Guo, Hui Fu, Tao Wang 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Design And Hydraulic Performance Of A Novel Hydraulic Ram Pump, Kailin Yang, Jiazhen Li, Yongxin Guo, Xinlei Guo, Hui Fu, Tao Wang

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

The automatic hydraulic ram pump (hydram) is a unique device that utilizes energy from a falling quantity of water as the driving power to pump some of the water to a head much higher than the source. The hydraulic ram is structurally simple, consisting of only two moving parts: the waste valve and the delivery (check) valve. There is also an air chamber with an air or snifter valve. With a continuous flow of water, the hydram will operate automatically and continuously with no other external energy. Hydrams are suitable for small-scale water supply schemes supplying farm- houses and isolated …

Application Of Multivariate Statistical Methods To Surface Water And Groundwater Of The Soummam Basin, Algeria, Lazhar Belkhiri, Lotfi Mouni

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Multivariate statistical methods, i.e., cluster analysis (CA), discriminant analysis (DA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA), were used to assess spatial variation in the water quality of the Soummam basin, Algeria. The application of hierarchical cluster analysis, based on all possible combinations of classification method, showed three main groups of samples. The group 1 samples are exclusively composed of surface water. Groups 2 and 3 samples are consisted of groundwater. Discriminant analysis (DA) was assigned about 98.6% of the cases grouped by CA. All groups are super-saturation with Ca-montmorillonite, dolomite, gibbsite, K-mica, kaolinite and quartz, and all these groups are under-saturation …

User Modeling And Personalized Optimization For Stakeholder-Driven Watershed Design, Meghna Babbar-Sebens, Adriana Debora Piemonti, Snehasis Mukhopadhyay, Vidya Bhushan Singh

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

We have developed a web-based, interactive, watershed planning system called WRESTORE (Watershed Restoration Using Spatio-Temporal Optimization of Resources) (http://wrestore.iupui.edu) that allows stake-holder communities to participate in a democratic, collaborative form of optimization process for designing best management practices (BMPs) on their landscape, while also optimizing based on subjective, qualitative landowners’ criteria beyond the usual socio-economic, physical, and ecological criteria. This system utilizes multiple advanced computational approaches including the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) hydrologic model for watershed simulations, interactive genetic algorithms and reinforcement-based machine learning algorithms for search and optimization, and deep learning artificial neural networks for user modeling, …

Real-Time Control Of Floods Along The Demer River, Belgium, By Means Of Mpc In Combination With Ga And A Fast Conceptual River Model, Bert Van Den Zegel, Evert Vermuyten, Vincent Wolfs, Patrick Willems 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Real-Time Control Of Floods Along The Demer River, Belgium, By Means Of Mpc In Combination With Ga And A Fast Conceptual River Model, Bert Van Den Zegel, Evert Vermuyten, Vincent Wolfs, Patrick Willems

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Climate model projections show that climate change will further increase the risk of flooding in many regions of the world. There is a need for climate adaptation, but building new infrastructure or additional retention basins has its limits, especially in densely populated areas where open spaces are limited. Another solution is the more efficient use of the existing infrastructure. This research investigates a method for real-time flood control by means of existing gated weirs and retention basins. The method was tested for the specific study area of the Demer basin in Belgium but is generally applicable. Today, retention basins along …

Reservoir Management For Flood And Drought Protection Using Infinite Horizon Model Predictive Control, Luciano Raso, Pierre-Olivier Malaterre, David Dorchies 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Reservoir Management For Flood And Drought Protection Using Infinite Horizon Model Predictive Control, Luciano Raso, Pierre-Olivier Malaterre, David Dorchies

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a control method that solves in real time an optimal control problem over a finite horizon. The finiteness of the horizon is both the reason of MPC's success and its main limitation. In operational water resources management, MPC has been in fact successfully employed for controlling systems with a relatively short memory, such as canals, where the horizon length is not an issue. For reservoirs, which have generally a longer memory, MPC applications are presently limited to short term management only. Short term reservoir management can be effectively used to deal with fast process, such …

Partial Information And Partial Weight - Two New Information Theoretic Metrics To Help Specify A Data-Based Natural System Model, Ashish Sharma, Rajeshwar Mehrotra 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Partial Information And Partial Weight - Two New Information Theoretic Metrics To Help Specify A Data-Based Natural System Model, Ashish Sharma, Rajeshwar Mehrotra

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

How to define a system? This is a problem faced routinely in science and engineering, with solutions developed from our understanding of the processes inherent, to assessing the underlying structure based on observational evidence alone. In general, system specification involves identifying a few meaningful predictors (from a large enough set that is plausibly related to the response) and formulating a relation between them and the system response being modeled. For systems where physical relationships are less apparent, and sufficient observational records exist, a range of statistical alternatives have been investigated as a possible way of specifying the underlying form. Here, …

Evaluating And Optimizing Sustainable Drainage Design To Maximize Multiple Benefits: Case Studies In China, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Evaluating And Optimizing Sustainable Drainage Design To Maximize Multiple Benefits: Case Studies In China, Jo-Fai Chow, Dragan A. Savić, David Fortune, Zoran Kapelan, Netsanet Mebrate

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

In the past, the focus of drainage design was on sizing pipes and storages in order to provide sufficient network capacity. This traditional approach, together with computer software and technical guidance, had been successful for many years. However, due to rapid population growth and urbanisation, the requirements of a “good” drainage design have also changed significantly. In addition to water management, other aspects such as environmental impacts, amenity values and carbon footprint have to be considered during the design process. Going forward, we need to address the key sustainability issues carefully and practically. The key challenge of moving from simple …

Accurate Prediction Of Ecological Quality Ratio With Product Unit Neural Networks, Arie De Niet, Erwin Meijers, Sebastiaan Schep

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

This paper shows how to use product unit neural networks (punn's) to derive a data-driven model for the prediction of ecological quality in surface water. In a comparison with other approaches the punns provide by far the best prediction. Moreover they reveal the underlying relations between characteristics and ecological quality. Encouraged by the European Water Framework Directive many measures are taken by Dutch government to improve water quality en ecological quality of surface water. Although it is well known which type of measures are most effective in what cases, it is uncertain what the total effect of a measure is. …

Disaster Risk Assessment And Mitigation Strategy For Tropical Cyclone Induced Storm Surge Hazard And Coastal Impacts Of Climate Change In Sri Lanka, Janaka J. Wijetunge 2014 City University of New York (CUNY)

Disaster Risk Assessment And Mitigation Strategy For Tropical Cyclone Induced Storm Surge Hazard And Coastal Impacts Of Climate Change In Sri Lanka, Janaka J. Wijetunge

International Conference on Hydroinformatics

Associated with extreme winds, heavy rainfall and storm surge, land-falling tropical cyclones have the potential to cause enormous damage and losses to coastal areas of Sri Lanka. In particular, much of the damage and loss of life results from coastal flooding due to cyclone induced storm surge. Moreover, climate change impacts are likely to exacerbate the impacts of such coastal hazards on existing and future coastal communities and development. Whilst some impacts such as possible sea level rise are gradual and occur over a long time-frame, extreme weather events can occur at any time and can have a significant impact …
