Remarkably, the marine life in the Southern Ocean is incredibly biodiverse and clearly thriving, although the organisms (fish and invertebrates) live for most of the year below 0°C. These freezing conditions have been present in the Antarctic for 10-15 Million Years and have resulted in the evolution of some bizarre adaptations to the cold. In this talk, I will discuss some of the adaptations to life below 0°C and how these animals respond to climate change. In particular, I will highlight the use of molecular tools to understand marine organisms responses to change.

Difficulties Of Hydrofracturing In Sandstone – Experimental Study, S Vikram, Dheeraj Kumar, Ds Subrahmanyam
Journal of Sustainable Mining
Hydrofracturing in sandstone is not an easy task. Sandstone is porous; fluid dissipation is common hence unable to obtain breakdown pressures in certain flow rates (0.0000005–0.0001 m3/s). The higher flow rate (0.00025 m3/s) is ascertained to determine the fracturing pressures. Due to this, fracture propagation and delineation are observed [1]. To enhance, an experimental method is adopted by carrying out 6 Hydrofracturing tests in a borehole comprising sandstone. A high flow rate of 0.00025 m3/s and viscosity 0.001 Pascal second is applied. Later, the fracture simulation was run on 12 core samples collected from the same depths in a lab. …

Fluorine Beyond Pfas: Tracking Fluorine During Photolysis Of Fluorinated Pesticides And Pharmaceuticals, William Arnold
Sustainability Seminar Series
Fluorine incorporation into organic chemicals is ubiquitous. There are many mass produced chemicals, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and medical contrast agents, containing one or more fluorine atoms that are released into the environment. Upon photolysis or oxidative treatment in aquatic systems, persistent fluorinated byproducts or fluoride from pesticides and pharmaceuticals are formed depending on the type and stability of the fluorine-containing functional group. Byproduct quantification was performed using 19F-NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Some motifs are persistent, generating new PFAS, while others degrade to fluoride. These results will assist in the future optimization of water treatment methods and development of pharmaceutical/pesticide …

The transportation sector stands out as a major challenge for California’s transition to a more sustainable transportation system, as it accounts for most of the greenhouse gas emissions. This underscores the urgency for government agencies to take decisive action in promoting the adoption of low-carbon transportation (LCT) within the heavy-duty vehicle (HDV) and off-road equipment (ORE) sectors. This study employs content analysis to investigate the impact of behavioral factors, specifically awareness and impression, on LCT adoption within these sectors. The analysis results are refined using a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool. The results indicate that awareness about LCT, in conjunction …

Pollinator Communities And Their Ecosystem Services At Conservation Grasslands And Adjacent Croplands, Araceli Gomez Villegas
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Pollinators are intrinsically linked to the success of unmanaged and managed ecosystems by providing pollination services that aid in the reproduction of wildflowers and many crops. Land use change, habitat loss, fragmentation, and related landscape-level phenomena (for example, increased pesticide exposure) threaten pollinators and have been associated with population declines. In the Midwestern region of the United States, land conversion of native prairies and grasslands to row-crop agriculture has been one of the largest contributors to pollinator habitat loss. Conservation programs, such as the Conservation Reserve Program, have worked towards removing environmentally sensitive lands from agriculture production and enrolling them …

Procedures For Rangeland Condition Assessment In The Kimberley 2022, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development
Natural resources published reports
This report defines the procedures used in 2022 by DPIRD to complete rangeland condition assessment (RCA) in the Kimberley region which has grass-based pastures. For the rest of the pastoral estate, DPIRD uses the Procedures for RCA in the Pilbara and southern rangelands which have predominantly shrub pastures.
RCA is the process DPIRD uses to make systematic, lease-level assessment of rangeland. Rangeland condition considers both the condition of pastures (as defined in the 'Pasture condition guide for the Kimberley') and soils as determined by erosion, using the erosion assessment method on pastoral lands in Western Australia (WA). The methods have …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Contrasting with shallow to moderately deep coalbed methane (CBM) reservoirs, deep CBM reservoirs exhibit favorable coal structures, high formation pressure, high free gas ratios, and high contents of total dissolved solids (TDS) and CO2. Extensive fracturing allows for CBM flowing at the initial stage, while the production parameters vary significantly throughout the CBM production. This requires wide technological boundaries of the main production technologies. Compared to shale gas and tight gas, deep CBM manifests different production mechanisms and relatively low free gas ratios, which lead to short flowing cycles of CBM. This necessitates timely water withdrawal for CBM …
