A Neural Network-Based Method For Analyzing Diffracted Wave Velocity, Tao Junhong, Zhao Jingtao, Sheng Tongjie
Coal Geology & Exploration
Background In seismic imaging, accurate velocity models are crucial for characterizing subsurface structures in a fine-scale manner. Notably, in coal mining, small-scale geological structures like faults and collapse columns are closely associated with mining accidents. These structures typically occur as diffracted waves in seismograms. Objective and Methods To effectively image these small-scale geological bodies, fine-scale velocity modeling using diffracted wave information is particularly important. Hence, this study proposed a neural network-based method for analyzing diffracted-wave velocity. First, diffracted-wave velocity spectra were generated using the gathers of diffracted waves that were separated in the common virtual source domain. Second, a gamma-ray …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Large-diameter lifesaving holes have been successfully applied multiple times in mine rescue through surface drilling. However, they show limitations in emergency response like quick dispatch and cross-regional rescue, and their technological adaptability is insufficient to cope with complex strata. Methods From the perspective of overall emergency rescue, with rescue timeliness as an indicator, this study summarized the critical technologies like response capability enhancement and borehole-forming technology for complex strata. It constructed an emergency handling process for mine rescue through surface drilling, specified the improvements in contingency plan activation, response actions, and response speeds, and established the hierarchical cross-regional rescue …

Accumulation Patterns And Exploitation And Utilization Targets Of Geothermal Resources In The Coal-Bearing Area In North China, Pang Zhonghe, Duan Zhongfeng
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective China is a major producer and consumer of coal resources in the world. The urgent need for the transition of the coal industry necessitates the investigation of both the origin and distribution patterns of geothermal resources in the coal-bearing areas of the country. The coal-bearing area in North China, with geothermal reserves accounting for 74.7% of the whole country, stands out as one of the areas with the most abundant geothermal resources nationally. This area encompasses four major coal-bearing basins: the Bohai Bay, Ordos, Qinshui, and Southern North China, with the lithospheric thermal state gradually weakening from east to …

Convection - Heat Transfer Coupling Mechanism For Closed-Loop Heat Extraction From Hydrothermal Resources Using Horizontal Wells, Gu Feng, Li Youwu, Zhang Yue, Gao Ying, Yang Peng, Wang Anran, Cui Jingyun
Coal Geology & Exploration
Objective Closed-loop heat extraction technology, which extracts geothermal energy without draining geothermal water, has emerged as a research focus in geothermal energy exploitation. However, there is a lack of studies on the impacts of convection in reservoirs on heat transfer. Methods To improve single-well heat extraction, this study proposed a technology of closed-loop heat extraction from hydrothermal reservoirs using horizontal wells. This technology aims to increase the contact area between wellbores and reservoirs while fully leveraging the convection in reservoirs. A flow and heat transfer model characterized by the coupling of horizontal wells, circulating water and reservoirs was established to …

There are several programs encouraging producers to reduce their carbon intensity, including United States Department of Agriculture climate-smart agriculture programs, the 2024 Nebraska Climate Action Plan, and the 2024 Nitrogen Reduction Incentive Act. The hope is that producers with lower carbon intensity (CI) scores will receive a premium for their products. Producers would be well advised to learn more about these programs, as reducing carbon intensity in agriculture seems to be an emerging agricultural policy trend that will be with us for some time to come.

Coastal Wetland Hydrology Under Climate Change: Dynamics, Consequences, And Eco-Geomorphologic Feedbacks, Yu Zhang
Sustainability Seminar Series
Coastal wetlands, some of the Earth's most valuable ecosystems, face unprecedented threats due to the accelerating impacts of climate change—sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, hurricanes, and storm surges. These forces are fundamentally altering the ecosystem functions, threatening their survival. Will these ecosystems adapt and persist, or are they doomed to disappear? In this talk, Dr. Yu Zhang explores this critical question through an integrated hydrologic and eco-geomorphologic lens. By examining the dynamic interactions between water, vegetation, and landforms, Dr. Zhang's research offers new insights into the potential futures of coastal wetlands and the intricate feedbacks that may shape their resilience in …

Biosphere Reserves are areas recognized by UNESCO that represent key terrestrial, coastal, and marine ecosystems. These areas are strictly protected and designed to fulfill three primary functions: conserving biodiversity, promoting sustainable development, and supporting scientific research and education. As of now, 759 biosphere reserves have been established in 136 countries and regions worldwide, supporting the livelihoods of approximately 236 million people. The total area of biosphere reserves covers 7.67 million km2, accounting for 4.10% of global terrestrial area, 5.08% of freshwater surface, and 0.21% of marine areas. The reserves encompass diverse ecosystems, including 2.22 million km2 of forests, 2.24 million …

Biodiversity is the core element of earth life system, and it is also the source of food, drinking water, health, security, and social welfare for people. Biodiversity contains critical genetic resources that help people to response to future uncertainties, in particular, hold solutions to climate change. However, due to population outbreak, technology advancement, and unsustainable production and consumption, the earth ecosystem has been under significant development pressure, which indicated by human ecological footprint of 170% that earth ecosystem can provide, which led to continuous loss of biodiversity. If such trend continues, the sixth massive biodiversity extinction will unavoidable. This study …

Man And The Biosphere: Life Community Of Ethno-Biography, Zhaorong Peng
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Against the backdrop of escalating ecological crises and biodiversity loss, UNESCO’s “Man and the Biosphere Programme” highlights the interdisciplinary value of global ecological governance. As an epistemological projection of the concept of a “community of life” ethno-biography—a synthesis of anthropology and natural history—emphasizes interspecies reciprocity and systemic interconnection, articulating the underlying logic of life as a shared biosphere. This perspective advocates a shift from anthropocentrism toward an ecological ethic of restraint, underscoring the equal survival rights of all species. Through multilateral cooperation and localized implementation, the Man and the Biosphere framework offers a practical platform for the ethno-biographic approach, with …
