Module 04: Hazardous Waste
The main purpose of this lesson is to demonstrate the idea that the things we throw away may harm other organisms. This lesson uses a brainstorming activity, and a lab experiment testing the effect of toxins on brine shrimp. This lesson also introduces the major pathways through which hazardous waste enter aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and provides an overview of the impacts of wastes such as heavy metal ions, strong acids or bases, and persistent organic compounds on plants and animals.

Module 04: Hazardous Waste
In this lesson, students will learn about the distinction between hazardous waste and other forms of waste as well as discuss the current challenges we face in finding ways to safely dispose of this waste. First, students will discuss their own conceptions of hazardous waste. Then, they will view a teacher-directed PowerPoint which provides additional information about hazardous waste. The lesson then concludes with the viewing of videos that relate to e-waste management issues.

This lesson continues on the topic of ecological impacts of hazardous waste and focuses specifically on the process of biomagnification. Students will read a case study about mercury poisoning in Minimata, Japan. Students will construct a food web diagram of a Minimata Bay ecosystem and then they will create a graph of mercury concentrations versus food chain position. This lesson also incorporates the idea of environmental justice.

Module 01: Introduction to Urban Ecology
This lesson is designed to elicit student preconceptions about cities, introduce the idea of cities as systems, and introduce the driving question for the entire year. The lesson begins with a brainstorm where the teacher leads a “word splash” about the word city. Then in order to encourage students to start thinking of cities as systems, student groups draw up plans (or construct models) of city neighborhoods and work to fit these neighborhoods into a city. This lesson was designed to complement instruction about the different categories of elements that make up an ecosystem: biotic, abiotic and man-made. Students will first categorize the things they pass on their way to and from school. Next, students will visit the field study site for the first time to familiarize themselves with the site, to understand that “nature” exists everywhere, and to experience the idea that humans—and their activities—are embedded in the environment and ecosystems.

Module 01: Introduction to Urban Ecology
Students gain a deeper understanding of the process of change for an urban ecosystem in this lesson, including the aspect of time, what processes drive this change, and the ways in which scientists study change over time. The idea of sustainability is introduced in this lesson, and students are given the opportunity to learn about the sustainable practices of their own city, and to compare the sustainability of their field study site to the sustainability of their city as a whole.
