To assess the susceptibility of elk (Cervus canadensis) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) to SARS-CoV-2, we performed experimental infections in both species. Elk did not shed infectious virus but mounted low-level serologic responses. Mule deer shed and transmitted virus and mounted pronounced serologic responses and thus could play a role in SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology.

Parallels Of Quantum Superposition In Ecological Models: From Counterintuitive Patterns To Eco-Evolutionary Interpretations Of Cryptic Species, David G. Angeler, Hannah B. Fried-Petersen
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Background Superposition, i.e. the ability of a particle (electron, photon) to occur in different states or positions simultaneously, is a hallmark in the subatomic world of quantum mechanics. Although counterintuitive at first sight, the quantum world has potential to inform macro-systems of people and nature. Using time series and spatial analysis of bird, phytoplankton and benthic invertebrate communities, this paper shows that superposition can occur analogously in redundancy analysis (RDA) frequently used by ecologists.
Results We show that within individual ecosystems single species can be associated simultaneously with different orthogonal axes in RDA models, which suggests that they operate in …

Factors Affecting Walleye And Sauger Recruitment In Lewis And Clark Lake, South Dakota, 2001–2022, William J. Radigan, Phil Chvala, Christopher Longhenry, Mark A. Pegg

Abundance of adult walleye (Sander vitreus) and sauger (Sander canadensis), two important sport fishes, decreased significantly during 2001–2022 in Lewis and Clark Lake, a border water between Nebraska and South Dakota, despite walleye fingerling stocking and stable age-0 abundance of both species. We sought to identify factors that drove variation in age-0 abundance from 2001 to 2022 using an information theoretic approach. Age-0 walleye catch per unit effort (CPUE) was correlated to mean monthly outflow, mean annual precipitation, and mean April gauge height in a delta. Age-0 sauger CPUE was correlated to adult conspecific CPUE, mean …

If You Build It, Will They Come? Assessing Habitat Quality For Marsh Birds At Created Marshes In Southeastern Louisiana, Katherine Aylett Lipford
LSU Master's Theses
Wetland loss occurs at an alarming pace globally, with extremely high rates along the northern Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana loses a football field of wetland every 100 minutes: that is 77,000 m2 of wetland bird habitat lost daily. In Louisiana, marsh creation projects combat wetland loss, and while wildlife habitat is often used as a justification for restoration, wildlife receives little to no consideration during and after construction. Habitat characteristics such as site-specific hydrology, vegetation composition, and habitat structure affect the abundance of wetland birds and understanding these features is crucial to creating habitat that will benefit birds. My …

Xizang, which plays an important barrier role in maintaining national ecological security, is a unique region that ensures China’s sustainable development and leads the construction of national ecological civilization. The Seventh Central Conference on the Work of Xizang has set clear goals and specific requirements for building an ecological civilization highland on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, which were identified as a new mission and task of Xizang government for environmental protection and sustainable development in the new era. Based on the previous research achievements about national ecological security barrier, this work further carried out the systematic study of ecological civilization highland …

Internal Logic And Policy Recommendations Of Big Data To Support High-Quality Development Of Modern Agricultural Industry, Yingming Li, Zitong Wang, Mingyue Wang, Shiyi Liu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Clarifying the internal logic of big data to support modern agricultural production is helpful to cultivate and develop new quality productive forces in agriculture. From the perspective of economics, this study proposes that the role of big data in modern agricultural production is mainly reflected in two levels. Firstly, it improves the total factor productivity of the traditional agricultural production function. Secondly, it changes the factor endowment structure of agricultural production and forms a new agricultural production function. Based on these, the realization form of big data to support modern agricultural production can be summarized as improving the efficiency of …

Development And Utilization Of Mineral Resources In The Arctic And China’S Strategic Countermeasures, Yina Su
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
There are abundant strategic mineral resources as oil, gas, iron ore, copper, and nickel in the Arctic region. If the Arctic routes can be opened in the future, they will become another important transportation channels connecting the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, following the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, which may reshape the world’s maritime trade and transportation pattern. With the development of science and technology, increase in mineral resources consumption and changes in the international environment, the strategic position of the Arctic region is increasingly elevated, and the United States, Russia and some other countries of the European Union …

Natural resource governance in the face of climate change represents one of the seminal challenges of the Anthropocene. A number of innovative approaches have been developed in, among others, the fields of ecology, governance, and sustainability sciences for managing uncertainty and scarcity through a coordinated approach to natural resource governance. However, the absence of an enabling legal and regulatory framework has been identified in the literature as one of the primary barriers constraining the formal operationalization of these governance approaches. In this paper, we show how these approaches provide tools for analyzing procedural mandates across governmental levels and sectors in …
