Diverse Portfolios: Investing In Tributaries For Restoration Of Large River Fishes In The Anthropocene, Kristen L. Bouska, Brian D. Healy, Michael J. Moore, Corey G. Dunn, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert 2023 U.S. Geological Survey

Diverse Portfolios: Investing In Tributaries For Restoration Of Large River Fishes In The Anthropocene, Kristen L. Bouska, Brian D. Healy, Michael J. Moore, Corey G. Dunn, Jonathan J. Spurgeon, Craig P. Paukert

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Rehabilitation of large Anthropocene rivers requires engagement of diverse stakeholders across a broad range of sociopolitical boundaries. Competing objectives often constrain options for ecological restoration of large rivers whereas fewer competing objectives may exist in a subset of tributaries. Further, tributaries contribute toward building a “portfolio” of river ecosystem assets through physical and biological processes that may present opportunities to enhance the resilience of large river fishes. Our goal is to review roles of tributaries in enhancing mainstem large river fish populations. We present case histories from two greatly altered and distinct large-river tributary systems that highlight how tributaries contribute …

Projected Long-Term Climate Trends Reveal The Critical Role Of Vapor Pressure Deficit For Soybean Yields In The Us Midwest, Wenguang Sun, David Fleisher, Dennis Timlin, Chittaranjan Ray, Zhuangji Wang, Sahila Beegum, Vangimalla Reddy 2023 USDA-ARS, University of Nebraska Lincoln

Projected Long-Term Climate Trends Reveal The Critical Role Of Vapor Pressure Deficit For Soybean Yields In The Us Midwest, Wenguang Sun, David Fleisher, Dennis Timlin, Chittaranjan Ray, Zhuangji Wang, Sahila Beegum, Vangimalla Reddy

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Extreme climate events including heat waves and droughts are projected to become more frequent under future climate change conditions. However, the mechanisms between soybean yields and climate factors, specifically involving variable rainfall and high heat episodes, are still unclear, particularly with respect to spatial trends in the United States (US) Midwest. A recently modified version of the model GLYCIM was used to evaluate rainfed soybean production across 12 states at a 10 km spatial resolution for three time periods (2011–2020, 2051–2060, 2091–2099) under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios 4.5 and 8.5. Results showed that except for the northernmost Midwest counties, …

Information About Historical Emissions Drives The Division Of Climate Change Mitigation Costs, Alessandro Del Ponte, Aidas Masiliūnas, Noah Lim 2023 Chapman University

Information About Historical Emissions Drives The Division Of Climate Change Mitigation Costs, Alessandro Del Ponte, Aidas Masiliūnas, Noah Lim

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

Despite worsening climate change, the international community still disagrees on how to divide the costs of mitigation between developing countries and developed countries, which emitted the bulk of historical carbon emissions. We study this issue using an economic experiment. Specifically, we test how information about historical emissions influences how much participants pay for climate change mitigation. In a four-player game, participants are assigned to lead two fictional countries as members of either the first or the second generation. The first generation produces wealth at the expense of greater carbon emissions. The second generation inherits their predecessor’s wealth and negotiates how …

Dynamic Characteristics Of Aerosol Optical Properties Over Dibrugarh City In The North-Eastern Indian Region During 2018–2021, Akshansa Chauhan, Shukla Acharjee, Ramesh P. Singh, Brent N. Holben 2023 National Central University, Taiwan

Dynamic Characteristics Of Aerosol Optical Properties Over Dibrugarh City In The North-Eastern Indian Region During 2018–2021, Akshansa Chauhan, Shukla Acharjee, Ramesh P. Singh, Brent N. Holben

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Aerosols play an important role in the earth's environment across the globe through their involvement in various earth system cycles. The change in the aerosol properties may cause short and long-term impacts, the knowledge of such changes is useful in the estimation of the pollution sources of any region. We have carried out the analysis of the aerosols' optical and radiative properties using AERONET station data from 2018 to 2021 in Dibrugarh City. The higher Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) values during winter and pre-monsoon months indicate high anthropogenic activities, and biomass burning in Dibrugarh. The impact of various sources and …

North Shore Prospecting, Shae Lindholm 2023 University of Minnesota - Morris

North Shore Prospecting, Shae Lindholm

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

If one wanted to pick a violently controversial issue in the North Shore region of Minnesota, mining and mineral prospecting would be at the top of the list. As someone who lives in the region, this EIS is a demonstration of policies directly relevant to my home, and is why I picked it. “Federal Hardrock Mineral Prospecting Permits” is an EIS originating from 2012 that, like the title of the EIS implies, deals with a request for permits to dig exploratory boreholes in various locations in the Superior National Forest, which would come from the USDA Forest Service and the …

Public Participation In The Vineyard Wind Project, Jude Humphrey 2023 University of Minnesota - Morris

Public Participation In The Vineyard Wind Project, Jude Humphrey

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

This paper analyzes the environmental and social impact of Vineyard Wind, a proposed offshore wind farm, as well as the public response to these impacts. This was done by reading and summarizing the draft and final environmental impact statement and comments made during the public participation process. Lawsuits brought against the company were also included in this analysis. The public participation process was deemed adequate and in some cases more than required by federal agencies, however the comments and lawsuits show that there are still concerns that were not included in the approved alternative. The public response to this project …

The Use Of Open Data Kit (Odk) In Characterizing The Cacao Industry Sites In Panay Island, Rhea J. Subong-Espina, Reynold D. Tan, Christine Mae D. Hernando 2023 University of the Philippines Visayas

The Use Of Open Data Kit (Odk) In Characterizing The Cacao Industry Sites In Panay Island, Rhea J. Subong-Espina, Reynold D. Tan, Christine Mae D. Hernando

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Cacao is one of the world's most valuable export commodities and cash crops. Western Visayas, along with the other regions in the Philippines, has committed to participate in national efforts to strengthen the production capacity of the cacao industry and address prospects and opportunities for the industry growth and development. This paper presents the results of a region-wide study that mapped out and assessed key cacao-producing areas in Western Visayas, specifically Aklan, Antique, Capiz, and Iloilo. The study sought their current production levels, important agricultural properties of farming areas, production densities, and growth potentials. Geospatial data was generated, analyzed, and …
