Nutrient And Fecal Microbe Assessment Of The Water Quality Of Tates Creek, Madison County, Kentucky, Krisopher H. Carroll, Walter S. Borowski

Tates Creek is a significant tributary to the Kentucky River that has shown high levels of microbial and nutrient pollution. We sampled the waters of Tates Creek comprehensively by occupying 25 stations along its 13-mile length, collecting stream water at the confluence of major tributaries from its headwaters to the Kentucky River. Samples were collected four times between May and August 2011 during dry periods as well as immediately after rainfall events.

We measured ammonium (NH₄⁺), nitrate (NO₃^-) and phosphate (PO₄^-) concentrations using colorimetry. Microbial samples were measured for total coliform …

Agriculturalists in Brasil’s Zona Bragantina are balancing short term social and economic goals with the long term productivity of their agroecosystems. While these goals often times are seen as conflicting, the implementation of agroforestry systems through EMBRAPA’s Projeto Tipitamba has provided an opportunity for farmers in the region to intercrop quick growing, marketable, non-timber forest products with highly valued lumber species all on the same area of land. As Projeto Tipitamba also provides the associated farmers with access to a bush-chopper, it also allows for farmers to stop swidden, slash-and-burn, agriculture and convert to chop-and-mulch land preparation. This paper examines how community based restoration partnerships can work to identify, protect and restore ecosystem services provided by salmon and our local rivers. Floodplains provide a wide range of ecosystem services to urban and rural communities and we should work collaboratively to protect and restore them. Floodplains are especially valuable and important for salmon recovery. Teaching children about the importance of the protecting environment is a key step in preparing future generations to solve environmental issues. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze how Escola Vila in Fortaleza, Brazil integrates environmental education into its curriculum to promote positive environmental actions later in the children’s lives. Classroom observations revealed how environmental education is incorporated into the curriculum in an interdisciplinary way. Students at Escola Vila learn about the environment through creative projects, experiential learning, sustainable practices on the campus and human rights education. Coral reefs, mangrove stands, and sea grass beds provide food and shelter for marine animals which fuel the bodies and economy of Kuna communities. • Results show an average of 1,170 visits per month, and with an average of 2,681 pages viewed per month.
• Six National Public Lands Day events have been completed.
• The Interagency Volunteer Standard Operations Manual has been updated and made available to all other SNAP teams.
• Get Outdoors Nevada supported 16 volunteer events in a variety of ways. These events utilized approximately 600 volunteers whom contributed approximately 2,500 hours of service.
• Preparations for the 11/5/11 volunteer recognition banquet continued.

As a highly developed city, it is surprising to find that proper waste management behavior has not yet been well-established in Hong Kong. In order to investigate the causes of this phenomenon, a study with a sample size of 1,001 was conducted. It has been found that most of the respondents were willing to participate in waste separation at the source, and the majority of them to separate waste were because of environmental protection reason, which contradicts the phenomenon seen in the landfill.
