Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Dirofilaria immitis (D. immitis); is a parasitic zoonosis with a prevalence of 53.8%, whose intermediate host is mosquitoes (Anopheles, Aedes, Culex, Taeniorhychus, Mansonia and Armigenes), final hosts are carnivores (dog, cat, fox, etc.) and humans. The causative agent settles in the pulmonary arteries and causes pulmonary hypertension, which can progress to congestive heart failure. Cardiac troponins (cTn), which have recently been used in veterinary cardiology, are considered the gold standard because of their high sensitivity and specificity for myocardial injury. In the study, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI) levels in healthy …

Water buffalo milk, compared to cow's milk, has a preferable composition in terms of health and nutritional value. Subclinical mastitis, one of the most important problems of the dairy industry, is as important of an issue in water buffaloes as in cows. In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of subclinical mastitis in buffaloes by metaanalysis, and to calculate the pooled prevalence. For the metaanalysis of the prevalence of subclinical mastitis in buffaloes, a total of 382 publications 294 from Scopus, 31 from Medline Complete, and 57 from ScienceDirect were obtained as a result of the literature …

Determination Of Acrylamide Using The Immuno-Enzymatic Method In Commercial Dog And Cat Foods, Ni̇met Kiliç, Bi̇lal Cem Li̇man
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Pet animals raised by humans do not have the chance to choose their own food. Therefore, mistakes made by humans in feeding dogs and cats will adversely affect the health of the animal. There are applications at high temperatures at various stages during the production of dog and cat foods. It is predicted that acrylamide (AA) can be formed as a result of a possible Maillard reaction since the cat and dog foods contain starch in its structure. The aim of this study is to determine the AA residue immuno-enzymatically in dry cat and dog feeds from different companies available …

This study presents computed tomography (CT) and osteological observations of nuchal perforations in the Middle-Late Byzantine cattle skulls, unearthed from Yenikapı Metro and Marmaray excavations (ancient Theodosius harbour), İstanbul, Türkiye. A total of 17 skulls with perforations of various size, ranging from elliptical to triangular, located in the nuchal (posterior) region of protuberantia intercornualis were examined. Rounded edges and smooth inner walls of these perforations indicated that they were formed when the animals were alive (ante mortem). The CT helped to understand the details of the caudal and dorsal part of head as well as the relationships between these perforations …

Antimicrobial agents are used for suppressing some bacterial infections during the rearing of poultry. In this study; the antibiotic resistance properties of Extended Spectrum ßeta-lactamase (ESßL), Amp-C, carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains isolated from chicken breast meat were determined by disc diffusion and E-test methods. Additionally, it is aimed to determine antibiotic resistance genes by classical polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In this context, E. coli strains were isolated from 7 of 100 chicken breast meat (fillets) and identified by a rapid identification system (BBL Crystal). Disc diffusion test results of the isolates were evaluated and 100% to tetracycline; ampicillin, …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Streptococcus agalactiae is a highly contagious pathogen with a significant economic impact on bovine mastitis. The research aims to achieve three objectives: 1) identifying and characterizing S. agalactiae strains responsible for bovine mastitis based on their phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, 2) determining susceptibility profiles to antimicrobial agents, and 3) applying molecular epidemiological analysis to explore intramammary infections in Thai dairy herds. We analyzed a collection of one hundred S. agalactiae isolates from clinical and subclinical mastitis cases in thirteen dairy herds in central region of Thailand. We used conventional microbiological procedures, the VITEK® 2 system, and molecular detection of the …

Canine cataract is a condition of lens opacity that if severe, can lead to vision loss. High prevalence of cataract is evident in small dog breeds. To assess retinal function in cataract patients, flash electroretinography is commonly used in practice. This study aimed to compare time- and frequency-domain electroretinal responses between normal and cataract eyes in small dog breeds. Eighty-four eyes from small dog breeds categorized into immature cataract (n=49), mature cataract (n=25) and control (n=10) eyes in this study. Full-field flash intensity series ERG was performed in dogs under scotopic and photopic condition. Data was analyzed and compared among …

The Effect Of High Dose Ascorbic Acid And High Dcad Administration On Oxidative Stress And Mammary Gland Function Of Dairy Goat Fed Under Tropical Condition, Sapon Semsirmboon
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
High ambient temperature (HTa) increased the respiration rate (RR) and rectal temperature (Tr) of dairy goats. The excess response resulted in acid-base imbalance, electrolyte imbalance, and systemic oxidative which could indirectly affect the mammary gland. Besides, HTa did directly alter cell function, and this has been proposed to be mediated by oxidative stress. We previously showed that high dietary cation and anion differences (DCAD) could decrease the HTa effect. In dairy cows, a high dose ascorbic acid (Asc) has been used to decrease oxidative stress. Then, It was hypothesized whether mammary gland function could be altered when the HTa was …
