Psychologists And Medications In The Era Of Interprofessional Care: Collaboration Is Less Problematic And Costly Than Prescribing, William N. Robiner, Tim R. Tumlin, Tanya Tompkins

Increasing emphasis on interprofessionalism and teamwork in healthcare renders psychologists’ collaborations critical and invites reexamination of psychologists’ roles related to medications. The Collaboration Level outlined by the APA’s Ad Hoc Task Force is more achievable and in synch with health reform than prescription privileges (RxP). RxP remains controversial due to training and safety concerns, lacking support from health professionals, psychologists, and consumers. Differences in educational preparation of psychologists relative to prescribing professionals are discussed. Enactment of only three of 170 RxP initiatives reveals RxP to be a costly, ineffectual agenda. Alternatives (e.g., integrated care, collaboration, telehealth) increase access without risks …

Post-conflict Libya faces the challenges of establishing a national health system that is capable of addressing mental health needs for a population traumatized by decades of repression and a recent war. In order to recover, traumatized populations require feelings of safety, calm, empowerment, connectedness, and hope. To help achieve this outcome, programs must focus on medical and social aspects at both the individual and community level.

The Sensory Processing Patterns And Activity Choices Of A Child With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Valerie Miller

It is estimated that up to 95% of children with autism spectrum disorder experience sensory processing problems. Minimal research is available on the relationship between specific sensory processing patterns, activity preference and behavior patterns in children. It is hypothesized that if children participate in play activities that support their sensory needs, they will experience less behavioral problems, more self-regulating behavior and a higher quality of life. This mixed-methods case study examines how a child with autism spectrum disorder participates in activities and looks at if those activities support sensory needs, thus reinforcing self-regulatory behaviors.

The ability of homing pigeons to return to their loft from unknown places has fascinated scientists for centuries. It is well established that homing pigeons, like migratory birds, posses an innate magnetic inclination compass to determine direction by measuring the angle between the magnetic field vector and the Earth's surface. Recent work has indicated that the avian magnetic compass is light mediated and appears to mediate magnetic information to the brain. Alcohol has the highest prevalence of use of any substance in Hillsborough County and throughout the nation. In 2011, Hillsborough County ranked first among all counties in alcohol-related fatalities. Although Hillsborough County DUI arrests decreased in 2011, Hillsborough still had more DUI arrests than any other Florida county. Over 25% of adult Americans suffer from a mental disorder each year, with depression and anxiety being some of the most commonly reported issues. Researchers estimate that between 10% and 50% of adult Americans will suffer from a depressive episode at some point in their life, and cognitive theorists argue that mental states, including disorders, are generated and maintained by personal, subjective beliefs, and that events can only be appropriately labeled by the individual experiencing them. The purpose of this study is to determine whether any technology exists to unobtrusively, reliably, and accurately detect symptoms of fatigue in real time before fatigue affects performance. Airline pilots are fitted with a variety of physiological measurement devices (e.g. EEG, blink rate, etc.) that have been demonstrated in the literature to be related to fatigue. Each crew of two pilots performs simulated gate-to-gate flight operations under rested and fatigued conditions, during which physiologic and performance parameters are continuously monitored. Twenty-three helicopter pilots flew a simulated Bell 206 in Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) scenarios with obstructions present. In Study 1, the head-mounted display (HMD) showed highway-in-the-sky guidance but not obstructions. Study 2 added obstructions (broadcast towers, power lines) in the HMD. Pilots detected and avoided HMD-depicted obstructions earlier than those only shown out the window. Wire strikes were frequent without HMD depictions of obstructions but were greatly reduced when these objects were shown in the HMD. They were completely eliminated when a red warning fence was overlaid on the power-line graphic at the point it transected the flight path. …

As capabilities of autonomous systems expand, traditional geospatial information displays used for supervisory control will likely need to be augmented with more explicit information on higherorder autonomous activities, such as goal-directed task selection, situation assessment, decisionmaking, and planning. We present a supervisory control interface for higher-order autonomy based on finite state machine diagrams called Layered Pattern Recognizable Interfaces for State Machines (L-PRISM). L-PRISM is a hierarchically arranged set of nested state diagrams coupled with a temporal control and payload viewer. Controllers identify vertical separation in aircraft depicted on 2-D radar displays by calculating altitude from numerical values. This is used to create a 3-D mental image to determine vertical spacing; a mentally fatiguing practice. Current stereoscopic display technology exists that may allow reduction of this aspect of controller workload. With a near doubling of traffic expected within the next two decades (FAA, 2012), controllers’ abilities to rapidly interpret spacing and maintain awareness will become increasingly imperative to safety. Air traffic controllers are often required to simultaneously communicate with several aircraft over multiple radio frequencies. As a result, during peak loading, it is common for the controller to receive multiple concurrent communications, each from a different aircraft, making it difficult to discern all necessary auditory communications. To address this problem, a modified air traffic control (ATC) interface was prototyped with the goal of increasing controller-to-pilot communication efficiency. Simulator pilots are subject to some of the constraints of a real flight situation in a PC based flight simulation. Situation awareness (SA) for simulator pilots was explored in terms of underlying cognitive aspects by analyzing the compound effects of expertise, working memory, inhibition and divided attention. Online and Offline SA measurements were analyzed with expertise and scores of Automated Operation Span Task, Stroop and Coşkunöz visual attention tasks. Regression analyses revealed the expected relationships of simulator pilots’ SA with expertise and inhibition capacity but not with working memory and divided attention capacity. Computational models of aircraft pilot performance will gain importance over the next decades, as major evolutions in the national airspace continue to emerge with the NextGen program. Evaluating new technology, or procedures such as self-separation, requires time and resourceconsuming pilot-in-the-loop (PITL) simulations. Models can augment PITL findings and they can help to constrain the scope of PITL simulations. If they are validated, such computational models may actually answer some design questions in place of PITL simulations. This paper summarizes a review of modeling efforts to address pilot performance, and elaborates on pilot-automation interaction models.

Clinical supervision plays an integral role in counselor development, assisting supervisees to transition from educational coursework to clinical practice. Feedback, including that which is corrective, allows supervisors to transmit knowledge to supervisees and communicate evaluations of supervisee performance. Despite the central role of feedback in clinical supervision, surprisingly little empirical attention has focused on supervisee experiences of corrective feedback in clinical supervision. This study sought to provide a deeper understanding of supervisee experiences of corrective feedback in clinical supervision. Venlafaxine-Induced Orthostatic Hypotension In A Geriatric Patient, Vidyashree Chikkaramanjegowda, Jose De Leon

Venlafaxine is not usually associated with risk of orthostatic hypotension. A 65-year-old US Caucasian female taking 225 mg/day of venlafaxine extended-release developed symptomatic orthostatic hypotension. The systolic and diastolic blood pressure dropped by 25 and 18 mm Hg, respectively, from supine position to standing position within 3 minutes. The patient was otherwise healthy and the orthostatic hypotension resolved with venlafaxine discontinuation. This was a probable venlafaxine adverse drug reaction according to the Naranjo scale. This case contributes to the scarce literature that indicates that clinicians need to be aware that occasionally venlafaxine can induce clinically significant orthostatic hypotension, particularly in …

An educational framework known as School Wide Positive Behavior Support being implemented in school systems across the country provides the schools with three tiers of support to address both academic and behavior challenges. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of peer tutors when applied to a Tier 2 intervention known as Check-In Check-Out (CICO). Peer tutors performed the morning check-in with the tutees by setting the expectations for the day and giving the tutees their Daily Progress Report (DPR) form.
