Purpose

The goal of the early assurance admission program is to find and recruit students with an interest in pursuing medicine as a career. Sidney Kimmel Medical College (SKMC) grants three types of early admission to students who meet the eligibility criteria from secondary and post-secondary institutions. This poster compares the performance of early admission students to the performance of a matched sample of traditional admission students.

The Financial Implications of Medical Education: An ROI Analysis of School Type, Specialty, and Training Location

Introduction

The financial burden of medical education profoundly influences career trajectories and long-term financial outcomes for physicians. This study examined the impact of medical school costs (comparing an in-state public and private medical school), specialty selection (focusing on Pediatrics, OB/GYN, and Orthopedic Surgery), and geographic factors on physicians' financial returns. Further, this study considered loan repayment strategies and their effects on career return on investment (ROI), offering insights into financial decision-making for future medical graduates.

Training surgeons poses many unique challenges. In addition to the clinical acumen that must be learned, a minimum threshold of technical competency is a requisite for independent practice. The trends of endovascular interventions and open surgical procedures add another layer of complexity to vascular surgery training. Simulation can provide a solution for both technical skills training and evaluating proficiency. ABSTRACT

Purpose: Empathy is important in providing healthcare and should be formed and evaluated during healthcare education. The purpose of these studies was to assess reliability and validity of a no-cost empathy scale and its cognitive and affective subscales in health professions students. Method: For reliability, students in six programs received two administrations of the Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale (KCES). A blind researcher analyzed data, using Cronbach’s α to assess homogeneity for total and subscale scores, and Pearson correlation to assess association between subscales and total scores. Purpose: Blood pressure (BP) assessment is a key component of pre-participation examinations and can aid athletic trainers (ATs) in diagnosing hypertension. However, the current pedagogical technique, which involves practicing BP assessment on healthy individuals, may not adequately prepare healthcare providers to recognize Korotkoff sounds at abnormal pressures during clinical practice. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine AT's ability to and confidence in assessing and interpreting BP using a high-fidelity simulator.

Authentic, diverse patient interactions at clinical sites may not occur for all students to prepare them for their career demands. Utilizing simulations in athletic training education may improve students’ transition to practice, but little research has examined interventions to prepare students for a team-based work environment. Introduction: Although more than half of pediatric residents report burnout, the incidence of moral distress, the course of moral distress and burnout during residency, and associations between this course and personal characteristics of residents are unknown. The purpose of this work was to examine the incidence, temporal course, and associations of moral distress and burnout in pediatric residents.

Background In low-income countries, many menstruating persons continue to face numerous challenges regarding menstrual hygiene management. Visual impairment further compounds the difficulties faced by in-school adolescent girls, but little is known about its consequences in Rwanda. Objective To explore the lived experiences of menstrual hygiene management among in-school visually impaired adolescent girls in Rwanda. Design descriptive phenomenology. Methods This study was conducted in four specialized educational institutions for visually impaired students in Rwanda. The Hippocratic Oath calls on doctors to “do no harm.” Yet we know from extensive public health research that clinicians repeatedly cause harm to Black patients by dismissing their medical concerns, misdiagnosing them, and undertreating their pain. These practices of differential treatment for Black patients have led to steadily increasing racial disparities in health care outcomes throughout the United States. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits this type of disparate impact, but modern Supreme Court jurisprudence forecloses opportunities for affected parties to seek legal relief—despite the clearly established legislative intent of Title VI.
