Does The Foundational Model Of Anatomy Ontology Provide A Knowledge Base For Learning And Assessment In Anatomy Education?, Melissa D. Clarkson, Mark E. Whipple

Throughout the development of the Foundational Model of Anatomy (FMA) ontology, one of the use cases put forth has been anatomy education. In this work, we examine which types of knowledge taught to anatomy students can be supported by the FMA knowledge base. We first categorize types of anatomical knowledge, then express these patterns in the form “Given ____, state ____”. Each of the 33 patterns was evaluated for whether this type of knowledge is compatible with the modeling and scope of the FMA.

The primary purpose of this study was to craft and validate a set of core competencies necessary for an e-Helper to possess. A review of the literature guided the creation of the initial competencies. Following expert review, the competencies were revised and formatted into an online survey which was sent to respondents in four target groups: (a) school administrators who had adopted telepractice as a service delivery model; (b) SLPs experienced in telepractice within a school setting; (c) current e-Helpers, and (d) scholars experienced in telepractice. In order to prevent overdose deaths, we need the target expertise in substance use disorders to areas with high rates of overdose. Background
Pediatric Urgent Care (PUC) serves as a rich environment to teach outpatient pediatric acute care. 96% of PUCs host trainees, but only 4% host medical students.1 Constraints on clinical teaching slots2 necessitate the utilization of novel settings.

Fall 2017, the University of Kansas (KU) School of Medicine approached the Division of Urgent Care at Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) in Kansas City, Missouri to host 3rd year medical students as part of their pediatric clerkship.

The PUC became a new site for medical student education, necessitating the development of a new curriculum.

This column describes a process for integrating information literacy (IL) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) content within a new school of medicine curriculum. The project was a collaborative effort among health sciences librarians, curriculum deans, directors, and faculty. The health sciences librarians became members of the curriculum committees, developed a successful proposal for IL and EBM content within the curriculum, and were invited to become course instructors for Analytics in Medicine. Context: Patient-centered care (PCC) is the most frequently implemented core competency by students in health care education programs, and is more likely to be included when students and preceptors are jointly treating patients during clinical education. Purpose: Physician Assistant (PA) programs using problem-based learning (PBL) and other self-directed learning pedagogies must inform applicants of the nature of this type of curriculum. The purpose of this study is to determine if the author-composed PBL Readiness Questionnaire can detect changes in applicant expectations of self, others, and facilitators following a one-hour PBL experience.

Method: Applicants to a Physician Assistant program took part in a one-hour PBL experience as part of their admissions interview process and 729 completed the PBL Readiness Questionnaire before and after the experience.

Purpose: Physical therapists (PTs) screen their patients for medical issues that may present as musculoskeletal conditions. In physical therapy education, learning activities followed by assessment of skills and clinical reasoning is important. The purposes of this study are to 1) demonstrate the feasibility of the use of standardized patients (SPs) and standardized physicians (SPhs) during a practical examination focused on medical screening, and 2) report outcomes related to the students’ abilities to screen for medical issues and make clinical decisions about referral to a physician.

It aimed to conduct a personality oriented job analysis to identify non-cognitive factors that may predict successful performance or performance difficulties in doctorate in physical therapy (DPT) students. The study employed focus groups and a survey with 9 DPT subject matter experts. Focus group participants including 3 DPT faculty members and 4 recent graduates of the DPT program identified 22 non-cognitive factors. Out of them, 15 factors were possibly associated with successful performance and 7 factors were possibly associated with performance difficulties. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to explore the effectiveness of a student-led interprofessional education (IPE) workshop in improving student attitudes and perceptions toward IPE. Students from four health science programs including Dental Hygiene, Communication Sciences and Disorders/Speech and Hearing, Health Services Administration and Occupational Therapy participated in a community service event. Students provided screenings to veteran patients including a health history intake, hearing test, and sleep screening while other students observed.

Effective pain assessment is a primary concern for nurses, who begin learning about pain as students. Pain knowledge and emotional intelligence may increase effectiveness of nurses’ pain assessments. Few studies have examined the relationship between emotional intelligence and pain knowledge and attitudes in nursing students. This non-experimental, correlational study addresses this research gap by examining associations between emotional intelligence and the pain knowledge and attitudes in nursing students.
