Purpose: Longitudinal education initiatives designed to prepare residents to address health disparities and social determinants of health (SDH) are needed. This report addresses this gap by describing a family medicine residency’s Community Health, Advocacy, and Managing Populations (CHAMP) curriculum and its evaluation by learners, faculty, and community partners. The CHAMP longitudinal curriculum is explicitly designed to prepare residents to address health disparities and SDH. We report early outcomes, including community partner feedback, of this innovative curriculum.

Effect Of A Brief Patient Communication Teaching On Both Attendee And Non-Attendee Family Medicine Residents., Dilip Nair, Adrienne Mays, Mohit Harsh

Physician-patient communication skills are important for physicians to acquire. Teaching skills is thought to require attendance by learners but this is difficult in graduate medical education settings. We asked if an educational intervention on physician-patient communication was associated with a "spill-over" effect to non-attendees in the same family medicine residency program.

We surveyed residents regarding communicating instructions to patients before the intervention and one month later, regardless of their attendance. Residents’ assessment of their patients’ understanding increased significantly post-intervention only if non-attendees were included.

This pilot study suggests a beneficial “spill-over” effect to non-attendee residents that warrants further study.

Abstract: Although rare, toxic leukoencephalopathy (TLE) associated with heroin inhalation have been reported. ‘Chasing the dragon’ may lead to progressive spongiform degeneration of the brain and presents with a large range of neuropsychological sequelae. A thorough social history and clinical suspicion are paramount in recognizing the diagnosis. This case is an example of TLE in a middle-aged white male with a history of polysubstance abuse. He presented with a three week history of progressive neuropsychological symptoms, including abulia, bradyphrenia, hyperreflexia, and visual hallucinations. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Patient-centred attitudes have been shown to decline during medical training in high-income countries, yet little is known about attitudes among West African medical students. We sought to measure student attitudes towards patient-centredness and examine validity of the 18-item Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale (PPOS) in this context.

PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: 430 medical students in years 1, 3, 5 and 6 of a 6-year medical training programme in Bamako, Mali.

Introduction: Recent research has shown high efficacy of HIV treatment for reducing the risk of HIV transmission to sexual partners. As the efficacy of treatment as prevention (TasP) has proliferated, a new messaging campaign, Undetectable = Untransmittable, has been gaining popularity. The purpose of this paper was to assess factors associated with the perceived accuracy of this TasP messaging strategy among a large and diverse sample of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in order to inform subsequent efforts at large-scale and implementation of the HIV prevention message.

Recent trends have allowed for differing approaches to scholarship, including digital publication. This dataset contains the results of a Readiness for Interprofessional Learnings Scale (RIPLS) pre-test and post-test that was administered in association with a health professions course in inter-professional education (IPE). Between 2016 and 2018, 251 surveys were collected from medical and nursing students at the University of Miami who participated in a one-day course on inter-professional education. All 251 participant surveys were entered into the data file. 245 surveys were complete and used in the study analysis. BACKGROUND: The accuracy of blood pressure measurement is variable in office-based settings. Even when staff training programs are effective, knowledge and skills decay over time, supporting the need for ongoing staff training. We evaluated whether a web-based continuing education program in blood pressure measurement reinforced knowledge and skills among clinical staff and promoted sustainability of an existing quality improvement program.

Introduction: The literature documents inadequate palliative medicine training in undergraduate and graduate medical education. As the population lives longer, many people will experience multiple chronic illnesses and the associated symptom burden. All physicians involved in clinical care of patients need to be equipped with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to provide palliative care, yet most physicians do not feel adequately prepared. We designed a curriculum to provide a meaningful palliative care-ethics (PCE) clinical experience to prepare senior medical students for future practice regardless of specialty choice.
