In lieu of real patients, healthcare educators frequently use simulated patients. Simulated patients can be realized in physical form, such as mannequins and trained human actors, or virtual form, such as via computer graphics presented on two-dimensional screens or head-mounted displays. Each of these alone has its strengths and weaknesses. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to assess health care professional’s interprofessional collaborative competencies and attitudes towards working in teams and to examine if differences exist between professionals who have completed formal interprofessional education (IPE) and those who have not. This study was guided by the Interprofessional Learning Continuum Model.
Background. IPE is the foundation of interprofessional collaboration. Objective

 To measure the prevalence of burnout among pediatric residents at Karolinska University Hospital (KUH).
 To describe the local drivers of burnout and the protective factors that lead to resilience and workplace engagement.

Conclusions

 Prevalence of burnout among Swedish pediatric residents in this study was 39%, which is lower than reported in the US (50-60%).
 Drivers of burnout were identified across all four domains. They included local features of the learning environment, and many are modifiable.
 Protective factors include perceived control over scheduling, better mental and physical health, lower perceived stress, and being a parent. …

Background: Research suggests deficits in shoulder and elbow strength and flexibility may explain the role of elbow injuries in overhead athletes, specifically ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injury in baseball players. Significant damage to this ligament typically requires operative care for continued activity in the sport. Several studies have demonstrated the success of rehabilitation programs post-surgery; however, few studies have examined the role of UCL injury prevention programs. A recognized upper extremity (UE) injury prevention method is the Thrower’s Ten Program. BACKGROUND: Empathy and compassion are vital components of health care quality; however, physicians frequently miss opportunities for empathy and compassion in patient care. Despite evidence that empathy and compassion training can be effective, the specific behaviors that should be taught remain unclear. We synthesized the biomedical literature on empathy and compassion training in medical education to find the specific curricula components (skills and behaviors) demonstrated to be effective.

METHODS: We searched CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL using a previously published comprehensive search strategy. We screened reference lists of the articles meeting inclusion criteria to identify additional studies for potential inclusion. …

Introduction: Shadowing a physician is an observational experience which includes a student observing a licensed healthcare provider caring for patients. Shadowing is commonly done by students before and during medical school, but little is known about the nature or extent of these extra-curricular observational experiences.

Objective: We hypothesized that shadowing experiences were common yet variable. We investigated the prevalence, nature, and perceived value of medical student experiences with shadowing physicians (both before and during medical school).

Background

With the increasing prevalence of myopia there is growing interest in active myopia control. However, the majority of progressive myopes are still prescribed single vision spectacles. This prospective study aims to elucidate the knowledge and attitudes of optometrists toward myopia control, and thereby identify perceived barriers to the implementation of a risk focussed model of myopia management.

Methods

A series of four focus group discussions were conducted involving optometrists in different settings and career stages.
