Informed consent is a foundational concept in modern medicine. Despite physicians’ ethical and legal obligations to obtain informed consent, no standard curriculum exists to teach residents relevant knowledge and skills. This paper presents a qualitative study of residents at one academic medical center. The authors conducted focus groups with trainees in the Departments of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Ob/Gyn and analyzed their responses using rigorous qualitative methods. Four themes emerged: First, participants agreed that informed consent and decision-making capacity were relevant in many clinical situations. Training child welfare workers to provide sexual health information and resources is stated throughout the extant literature as a pressing need in efforts to prevent unintended pregnancy among YFC. While previous studies have analyzed the relationship of pre-admission factors on USMLE Step 1 scores few studies have looked at the effects obtaining a graduate degree prior to medical school matriculation. Therefore, this study sought to determine if there was an advantage between obtaining a graduate degree before medical school when it came to step 1 board scores. This retrospective study analyzed step 1 scores and medical school application data from 718 students who matriculated at a public midwestern medical school between 2014 and 2016. A national focus for healthcare reform is preventing hospital readmissions. Thirty-day unplanned hospital readmissions impact patient outcomes and are costly to the healthcare system. This project explored the impact between the discharge navigator and 30-day unplanned readmissions for heart failure and sepsis populations in a 238-bed community hospital located in central Virginia. The primary aim of this discharge navigator project was to reduce 30-day readmissions for the heart failure and sepsis populations to meet the goals of the top quartile for like hospitals and the evaluation of cost avoidance for these readmissions. Currently, 11.8 million individuals live with a cognitive impairment or are diagnosed with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD) in the United States with approximately 820,000 women with IDD of reproductive age. Before the 1970s, this population had been largely institutionalized, facing stigmatization and unethical contraceptive methods including poor sexual and reproductive education, barriers to healthcare, and involuntary sterilization. Living in state-funded institutions, private institutions, or with relatives or caregivers, this population is continuing to be integrated into communities with increasing societal recognition regarding their human rights, including sexual and reproductive health4. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD), otherwise known as Pick’s disease, is a clinically heterogeneous group of sporadic and familial neurodegenerative diseases. These conditions are characterized by dementia, behavioural and language dysfunction and loss of executive skills resulting from the degeneration of the frontal and temporal lobes. Although reversible causes of dementia are always sought during the evaluation of patients with progressive cognitive decline, the occurrence of a reversible aetiology may distract from evaluating for neurodegenerative causes of dementia. This report is about a 66-year old man with features of FTD and superimposed chronic subdural haematoma.

Graphic medicine - or the communication of health-related narratives through images and texts, such as comics - has been increasingly recognized as a powerful educational tool. My project investigates the value of integrating graphic medicine to medical education, specifically to improve mental health literacy and de-stigmatize mental illness. Interprofessional collaboration, consultation, and cooperation have long been a direct and indirect professional responsibility of human services practitioners in integrated healthcare settings. In order to effectively educate and train practice-ready human services students for rapidly changing healthcare settings, it is critical that human services organizations and programs examine the need for interprofessional competency education. This article provides timely considerations on developing interprofessional education competencies in human services education.

We conducted a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to obtain validity support for the Consultation Skills Scale (CSS) in a sample of 369 counseling professionals and interns. Upon obtaining a poor model fit from an initial CFA, we utilized modification indices and removed nine items from the CSS. As a result, we achieved a better model fit for the shorter 8-item instrument (CSS-S). To further examine validity of the CSS-S, we also explored the relationships between counselors' consultation skills and two related professional activities, ability to foster supervisory working alliance and ability to engage in interprofessional collaboration.
