INTRODUCTION: An important goal of any health promotion effort is to have it maintained in delivery and effectiveness over time. The purpose of this study was to establish a community-based noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus prevention program in three different types of American Indian communities and evaluate them for evidence of long-term sustainability.

METHODS: The target population was fourth- and fifth-grade students from three different models of American Indian communities. The evidenced-based Dangerous Decibels® program was adapted to include local media, classroom education, family and community outreach, and web-based activities. A mindfulness practice may give individuals who stutter a way to alter negative thought patterns (Robins et al., 2012), which may help them reduce struggle and avoidance behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mindfulness meditation on disfluencies, anxiety, and self-perceptions in adults who stutter. Four participants (3 males, 1 female) completed the study and were between the ages of 20 and 37. Pre- and post-treatment data were recorded using the SSI-4, BAI, MAAS and OASES. The purpose of this study was to investigate the time line of lexical access in 8-11 year-old children with Specific Language Impairment and with and without deficits in auditory processing. Typically developing children and children with SLI, ages 8-11 years, participated in a Picture-Word Interference (PWI) task and a Picture-Picture Interference (PPI) task. To date, little research has been conducted on the relationship between fatigue and expressive language among Multiple Sclerosis patients (MS). This study was a response to this knowledge gap. A nonrandom, matched- subject, mixed-factor design model was used with a purposive sample of 17 individuals with MS (five had primary-progressive (PP) MS, and 12 had relapsing-remitting (RR) MS). The research design was subjected to pretesting to ensure validity. Participants were assessed on a range of language tasks after undergoing one bout of cardiovascular exercise (NuStep T5 Recumbent Cross Trainer) and asked to provide a subjective fatigue score. This study investigated reading comprehension gains through incidental learning for students participating in an after-school program utilizing the Barton Reading & Spelling System®. Participants included 78 students enrolled in a public school system in Northeast Arkansas. These students were compared to peers with similar reading difficulties who did not participate in the program. Reading comprehension gains through incidental learning were determined for all participants based upon national and state standardized assessment measures (e.g., Iowa Test of Basic Skills® (ITBS®), Stanford Achievement Test, Tenth Edition (SAT-10), and the Arkansas Augmented Benchmark Examination (AABE)). This study utilized a 19-item survey to investigate whether graduate SLP students understand the spectrum of skills necessary to become “culturally competent,” and to assess the number and types of formal and informal activities used to achieve cultural competency instruction in the speech-language pathology curriculum. Graduate students enrolled in five accredited graduate programs for Communication Disorders in the state of Arkansas responded to the survey. Overall, results indicated that accredited university speech-language pathology programs in Arkansas are attempting to implement opportunities for expanding cultural awareness and sensitivity for their students. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of video modeling to clinician modeling in the clinical setting for individuals with non-fluent Broca's aphasia and apraxia of speech. Words and phrases were targeted for each treatment approach. During 25 minute sessions, each participant was asked to spontaneously say the target words when given the target words in writing. Data were collected each session in terms of speed and accuracy of productions. Scores for 19 sessions for participant 1 and scores for 21 sessions for participant 2 were used for analysis. The purposes of this study were to examine how many levels of the Barton Reading and Spelling System® (BRSS®) should be completed in order to achieve a target normative score on standardized tests which measure literacy skills, and to examine the efficacy of an after-school literacy program by comparing a group of similar students who did not participate. Standardized tests used were the Arkansas Benchmark Examination Literacy Subtest (ABLS) and the Stanford Achievement Test, Tenth Edition English Language Arts Subtest (SAT-10 ELA). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether participation in an after-school literacy program utilizing the Barton Reading & Spelling System® (BRSS; Barton, 2000; Barton, 2002) would significantly affect mathematics skills as measured by total mathematics scores on a state-mandated testing assessment. The study consisted of 38 age- and gender-balanced participants categorized into an experimental or control group based on participation in the after-school program. This review summarizes extant findings supporting multifactorial models of stuttering within the context of preschool-age stuttering assessment. Evidence is given for a number of speech-language and associated factors/domains to consider when evaluating young children who stutter. Selected factors are presented in two parts: (1) Caregiver Interview and (2) Direct Child Assessment. Factors addressed during caregiver interviews include: gender, time since and age at stuttering onset, family history of stuttering, caregivers’ perception/concerns about stuttering, and temperament. Factors addressed during direct child assessments include: stuttering behaviors, speech-associated attitudes/awareness, speech rate, as well as speech sound and language development. Purpose: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of a modified version of a newly developed therapy for aphasia and acquired apraxia of speech (AOS), Combined Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech Treatment (CAAST).

Method: Four speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia received CAAST in the context of multiple baseline designs. Dependent variables included language measures (i.e. production of correct information units (CIUs)) and speech production measures (i.e. speech intelligibility and percent correct consonants (PCC) in sentence repetition).

Perceptual ratings aggregated across multiple nonexpert listeners can be used to measure covert contrast in child speech. Online crowdsourcing provides access to a large pool of raters, but for practical purposes, researchers may wish to use smaller samples. The ratings obtained from these smaller samples may not maintain the high levels of validity seen in larger samples. This study aims to measure the validity and reliability of crowdsourced continuous ratings of child speech, obtained through Visual Analog Scaling, and to identify ways to improve these measurements. Background: Our study aimed to determine source of upload and content portrayed in the 100 most-viewed videos on autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) on the video sharing public forum, YouTube. ASDs have become highly prevalent in the last decade, arousing a significant response from the media and psycho-educational health professions. Utilization of and reliance on social media for information on health matters has also proliferated. Some suggest that online videos could promote early detection (and intervention) of ASD by prompting caregivers to seek guidance. However, the usefulness of the available videos is unclear.
