Because there are only a small number of publications that have examined dysphagia from the perspective of people living with this disorder, the primary purpose of this project is to help expand the clinical knowledge base by systematically recording and analyzing the experiences of a healthy subject placed on modified consistency diets. The first component of this project addresses research pertaining to swallowing disorders, diet levels on which clients with swallowing disorders are placed, medical conditions associated with dysphagia, the process that clinicians follow when making decisions about modified diets, and the emotional effects of being placed on a modified …

The current research sought to determine (a) if speech inconsistency is a core feature of childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) or if it is driven by comorbid language impairment that affects a large subset of children with CAS and (b) if speech inconsistency is a sensitive and specific diagnostic marker that can differentiate between CAS and speech delay.

The investigator examined reports of vocal health among singers in two different choral groups on a university campus, a population consisting of both music majors and non-music majors. These student singers consented to filling out a 36-question survey that asked about their overall vocal health and daily habits that might affect that health. A section of this survey involved rating answers from 0-4, while the other section required write-in answers. Results indicate that there is no significant difference in self-reported vocal health between music majors and non-music majors, although there were minor differences between these populations regarding daily habits, such …

The objective of this project was to understand better how a neurodegenerative disease can impact speech and language in individuals who speak multiple languages. Using a case study approach, we measured language expression and understanding through production, comprehension, and word retrieval in a participant with dementia who spoke Greek and English. To examine speech and language decline over time, we administered two commonly used language tests (Boston Naming Test and Bilingual Aphasia Test) in both Greek and English at four different times across a span of approximately seven months. The purpose of this study is to understand the physical, psychological, and social changes that patients undergo post laryngectomy surgery that may impact their quality of life. The participants for this study included laryngectomized patients, family members or friends of patients, and speech pathologists. Data was gathered using an online questionnaire distributed through social media outlets, support groups, medical centers, speech clinics, and by word of mouth. The purpose of this line of research is to determine whether the ‘Digitizer’ is a reliable and valid way to measure cognitive load during dual working memory-drawing tasks. A quasi-experimental study was conducted at the University of Arkansas in a research laboratory, and participants included seven right-handed healthy adults with normal or corrected vision and no reading difficulty. The participants were selected on a volunteer basis. With the job market becoming increasingly difficult to enter, coupled by a growing public distaste for vocal fry, the question of the study is to determine if participants of the study in the general public can detect vocal fry, and if so, if it has an effect on which voice a participant would choose to hire for a position. The participants included 64 people residing in the United States, ranging from the ages 20-70 with varying backgrounds. The purpose of this study is to qualitatively investigate and compare the family beliefs, values, and perceptions of parenting of families who have adopted children with Down syndrome (DS) to parents who have biological children with DS. Participants in the study included 27 parents of biological children with DS and six parents of adopted children with DS. Participants were interviewed through a digital survey that was distributed through Qualtrics Online Survey Software. Quantitative analysis placed the participants into groups and qualitative analysis was used to identify beliefs, values, and perceptions. The present study examined whether natural and synthetic speech are differentially encoded in the auditory cortex. Auditory event-related potential (ERP) waveforms were elicited by natural and synthetic fricative-vowel stimuli (/sɑ/ and /ʃɑ/) in a passive listening paradigm in adult listeners with normal hearing. ERP response components were compared across conditions. The results indicated that peak latencies to natural speech were significantly earlier than those to synthetic speech. Natural speech also produced significant electrode hemisphere site effects, whereas synthetic speech activated left, midline, and right electrode hemisphere sites equally. However, regardless of the setting, a speech-language pathologist is likely to encounter a person who is transgender on their caseload. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association mandates that all of its members be culturally competent when working with clients from different cultural backgrounds, including those from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community.

Models of speech perception suggest a dorsal stream connecting the temporal and inferior parietal lobe with the inferior frontal gyrus. This stream is thought to involve an auditory-motor loop that translates acoustic information into motor/articulatory commands and is further influenced by decision making processes that involve maintenance of working memory or attention. Parsing out dorsal stream’s speech specific mechanisms from memory related ones in speech perception poses a complex problem. Here I argue that these processes may be disentangled from the viewpoint of the temporal dynamics of sensorimotor neural activation around a speech perception related event.

This research thesis will 1) provide an overview of the psychoacoustics of music perception, particularly as related to the properties of pitch perception in young children and 2) describe the methods and outcomes of an exploratory study to evaluate the efficacy of obtaining pitch perception data from preschool age children with hearing loss. Each child completed a series of three tasks, including coaching and practice, single note perception, and pitch contrasts. Vocal matching, the ability to imitate phonetic properties of speech, was examined in spontaneous interactions of sixteen dyads of mothers and their hearing-impaired (HI) infants with cochlear implants and age-matched normal-hearing (NH) infants. Mother-infant dyads came to three sessions at three, six, and 12 months post-implantation. Vocal matching was defined as an instance of perceptual and acoustic similarity of vowels and consonants between adjacent maternal and infant utterances. Vocal matching occurred in 25% to 50% of infant and in 17% to 64% of mother vocalizations across dyads. Both mothers and infants in the HI group produced fewer matches as compared …

Personal sound amplifiers (PSAPs) provide accessible and affordable healthcare to hearing impaired individuals that would otherwise not seek treatment. Like a self-fitting hearing aid, PSAPs do not involve an audiology service. The current pilot study investigated the impact different levels of instruction have on the effectiveness of using a personal sound amplifier product for four participants with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. Basic written instruction and premium audiology services were utilized to teach participants how to use the device.
