Abstract

Background:

A patient’s skin is the major source of pathogens that can cause post-operative complications such as surgical site infections (SSIs). Optimization of pre-operative skin antisepsis is obtained with chlorhexidine gluconate (CG) and povidone-iodine (PI). These two solutions are the most widely used antiseptics for pre-operative purposes.

Objective:

Among surgical patients greater than 18 years of age undergoing clean-contaminated surgery, which antiseptic, iodophors or chlorhexidine gluconate, is more effective at reducing postoperative surgical site infections?

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention - Pediatric Audiology Links to Services (EHDI-PALS) is a web-based national directory of pediatric audiology facilities in the United States, created by an expert committee and launched in October 2012. In this study, data from 1,232 audiology facilities were analyzed to identify the number of registered facilities, types of diagnostic hearing tests offered, and the number of children under 5 years of age who were diagnosed with hearing loss. Purpose: Recent literature has highlighted MRSA nasal screening as a possible antimicrobial stewardship program tool for avoiding unnecessary empiric anti-MRSA therapy for pneumonia. MRSA is an important cause of pneumonia and clinicians must determine when empiric antimicrobial therapy directed toward this pathogen is needed. Negative MRSA nasal swab has been shown to have a high negative predictive value ( >95%) across different types of pneumonia. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of negative MRSA nasal swabs on the duration of anti-MRSA therapy in a community hospital setting.

Exosomes are heterogeneous nanoparticles 50-150nm in diameter. Exosomes contain many functional cargo components, such as protein, DNA, and RNA. While protein and RNA exosome content has been extensively studied, very little work has been done to characterize exosomal DNA. Here, we demonstrate that exosomal DNA is heterogeneous and its packaging into exosomes is dependent on the cell of origin. Furthermore, through a rigorous assessment of various isolation methods, we identify Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) as the best method for the isolation of exosomal DNA for downstream applications. Lymphangioma is a benign congenital malformation of the lymphatic system that is relatively common in juvenile population. Rarely, it can be seen in adults and majority of the cases are reported in the head and neck region (70-75%). Typically, these malformations are asymptomatic. In this report, we present a rare case of splenic lymphangioma presenting with severe, intractable abdominal pain.

•Spontaneous fungal peritonitis (SFP) is an infection defined as a neutrophil count (> 250 cells/mL) in the ascitic fluid with the evidence of positive fungal culture (1) while excluding other intra-abdominal infections. SFP is not as common as spontaneous bacterial peritonitis and has higher mortality rates due to late recognition and difficulty in differentiation between SFP and SBP. (1,2). The common risk factors that have shown to increase the mortality for SFP include hepatorenal syndrome, patient on SBP prophylaxis, elevated APACHE II scores on admission, and elevated lactate levels (2,3). The word amyotrophic is derived from Greek, and means “without nourishment to muscles”, lateral means to the sides and sclerosis means hardened (“What is ALS?,” n.d.). First described by Jean-Martin Charcot in the 1800s, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive degenerative motor neuron disease. Motor neurons are very important cells, and extremely unique since they can be very long with some motor neurons having a length of over a meter (“Disease Mechanisms,” n.d.).
