Background: Dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness, is endemic in tropical regions, including border regions like the Rio Grande Valley while often self-limited, severe presentations such as dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome highlight its challenges and complexities. This report describes an atypical dengue case with severe hematological manifestations, underscoring the diagnostic challenges and the importance of early recognition, multidisciplinary evaluation, and evidence-based management.

IMPORTANCE: The novel Phoenix Sepsis Score and sepsis criteria were derived and validated using a multicountry dataset and proposed as a new definition for sepsis in children.

OBJECTIVE: To externally validate the Phoenix Sepsis Score and sepsis criteria in a cohort of children hospitalized with suspected community-acquired sepsis.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the comparability of mean sensitivity (MS) values obtained using the Macular Integrity Assessment (MAIA; CenterVue S.p.A. [iCare], Padova, Italy) and Microperimeter-3 (MP-3; NIDEK CO., Ltd., Gamagori, Japan) microperimetry (MP) devices.

METHODS: This cross-sectional study includes subjects with healthy eyes, eyes with diabetes mellitus without diabetic retinopathy (DM no DR), diabetic retinopathy (DR), and non-exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Background: The standard diagnostic approach for prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis consists of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, digital rectal examination (DRE) and image-guided targeted biopsies. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate the impact of preoperative dysphagia on the postoperative incidence and severity of dysphagia in patients undergoing ACDF at multiple institutions.

METHODS: After IRB approval, patients over 18 years of age who underwent an elective ACDF for degenerative conditions were prospectively enrolled at two academic centers from 2018 to 2021. Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are congenital vascular anomalies that can lead to severe complications, including hemorrhage and neurological deficits. This study compares the outcomes of microsurgical resection and stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for SM grade I and II AVMs. Out of a large multicenter registry, we identified 180 matched patients with SM grade I and II AVMs treated with either microsurgical resection or SRS between 2010 and 2023. The primary outcomes were AVM obliteration rates and complications; secondary outcomes included neurological status and functional outcomes measured by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS). PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to highlight the utility of echocardiography in the diagnosis and management of cardiomyopathies.

RECENT FINDINGS: Echocardiographic parameters function synergistically to guide decision-making ranging from early detection of disease and screening to risk stratification of complex disease. The collective wealth of information available from 2D/3D assessment, Doppler, diastology and strain makes echocardiography an invaluable decision aid.

In critical illness, all elements of gut function are perturbed. Dysbiosis develops as the gut microbial community loses taxonomic diversity and new virulence factors appear. Intestinal permeability increases, allowing for translocation of bacteria and/or bacterial products. Epithelial function is altered at a cellular level and homeostasis of the epithelial monolayer is compromised by increased intestinal epithelial cell death and decreased proliferation. Gut immunity is impaired with simultaneous activation of maladaptive pro- and anti-inflammatory signals leading to both tissue damage and susceptibility to infections.
