Commentary: Critical Analysis Of Chiropractic At The Crossroads Or Are We Just Going Around In Circles., Dennis M. Richards

Dennis M Richards

This commentary presents critical analysis of a paper published by Dr John Reggars, and based, as he admitted, on his perceptions and opinions. Many of those are wrong. Others raise important questions. Sourced from a lecture presented by him at the 2010 annual conference of the Chiropractic and Osteopathic College of Australia (‘COCA’), this polemic is best understood in its historical and political contexts. COCA’s objects include political activity and Reggars is its vice president, which he failed to declare.

Vitalism And Value In Undergraduate Chiropractic Education, Dennis M. Richards 2013 Richards Chiropractic

Vitalism And Value In Undergraduate Chiropractic Education, Dennis M. Richards

Dennis M Richards

Vitalism is a philosophical viewpoint with ancient origins. In more recent times it has been discussed as a reaction to dominant reductionist and mechanist models in science and health. A ‘new vitalism’ incorporates recent developments in philosophy and science.

Demographic changes, particularly ageing, are occurring in many societies. These changes and the rise of non-communicable diseases resulting from unhealthy lifestyles challenge biomedicine’s ability to address them and societies’ abilities to pay for treatment of them.

Chiropractic was founded on and continues to involve vitalist thinking. A vitalist approach by chiropractors might offer solutions to these challenges. Such an approach would …

A Systematic Review Of The Benefits Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions Following Transient Ischaemic Attack And Stroke., Maggie Lawrence, Jo Booth, Stewart Mercer 2013 Glasgow Caledonian University

A Systematic Review Of The Benefits Of Mindfulness-Based Interventions Following Transient Ischaemic Attack And Stroke., Maggie Lawrence, Jo Booth, Stewart Mercer

Dr. Maggie Lawrence

Background Recent epidemiological studies have demonstrated an association between perceived psychological stress and ischaemic stroke. A feature of stroke is recurrence; 30-40% within 5 years following first transient ischaemic attack/stroke. Equipping patients with skills and coping strategies to help reduce or manage perceived psychological stress, may represent an important secondary prevention intervention. Mindfulness-based Interventions are structured, group-based self-management programmes with potential to help people with long term conditions cope better with physical, psychological, or emotional distress. Review evidence suggests significant benefits of across a range of physical and mental health problems. However we could find no evidence synthesis relating specifically …

Modelling Stress Constructs With Biomarkers: The Importance Of The Measurment Model, Joanne Bradbury 2013 Southern Cross University

Modelling Stress Constructs With Biomarkers: The Importance Of The Measurment Model, Joanne Bradbury

Joanne Bradbury

Background The transactional model of stress describes a psychological and physiological stress response that is elicited when an environmental demand is perceived to out-weigh the ability to cope with the demand. With perception at its core, this theory explains large variances in human stress responses. A frequently cited measure of stress perception is the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). A two-step approach to structural equation modelling (SEM) necessitates that a valid measurement model for stress be first established through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and then the impact of stress on the biomarkers be assessed. Methods The aims of this study were …

Factors Influencing The Use Of Complementary Alternative Methods (Cam) In Patients Attending An Adult Sickle Cell Clinic In Jackson, Mississippi., Wendy E. Thompson Dr, Clifton C. Addison

Wendy Thompson

Abstract Background: This study builds on a previous study that examined pediatric patients with sickle cell disease and use of complementary and alternative therapies. The results of the study revealed that the use of CAM therapies is common for children with SCD. Prayer, relaxation techniques, and spiritual healing were the most commonly reported CAM therapies. However, there is a paucity of research studies on CAM use among adult sickle cell patients and the associated factors that predict its use. This research sought to explain the frequency of CAM use and to examine the factors influencing the use of CAM as …

Family Medicine and Population Health Publications

Background

Obesity is associated with knee pain and is an independent predictor of incident knee osteoarthritis (OA); increased pain with movement often leads patients to adopt sedentary lifestyles to avoid pain. Detailed descriptions of pain management strategies by body mass index (BMI) level among OA patients are lacking. The objectives were to describe complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and conventional medication use by BMI level and identify correlates of CAM use by BMI level.

Methods

Using Osteoarthritis Initiative baseline data, 2,675 patients with radiographic tibiofemoral OA in at least one knee were identified. Use of CAM therapies and conventional medications …
