Far from the hospital room and its doctor, the medicine and philosophies of Lakazy and its Ombiasa pertain to a domain largely untouched by western logic and science. Their practices appear to be effective and unique enough to have survived the advent of compelling new theological and scientific belief systems and the vastly different perspectives on community health and stability which these systems have brought to Madagascar. The prime examples of these new arrivals are Christianity and modern medicine, respectively. Within and without their sacred space, the mission of the true Ombiasa is to support their community and for this …

As globalization persists and varying cultures come into increasing contact with each other, people are becoming more exposed to a multitude of approaches to wellness. With the opportunity to examine wellness from multiple perspectives, people have the chance to blend aspects of different systems. Each paradigm of wellness posses it’s own virtues and failures, but is incomplete on its own, and thus a more holistic and integrative approach is in order. In this process, the notions of “holism” and of “wellness” demand to be contemplated and reconsidered, and ultimately united to establish a goal for healthy living. Once this is …

Looking back, I guess the name should have been my first clue. “Alternative” medicine? “Complementary” medicine? What is it about these medical practices, which to me are completely traditional, that places them in a secondary position to other medicinal options in the United States? [excerpt]

Background: Heliotropium peruvianum L., popularly known as "Heliotrope" in English, is a trailing plant belonging to the family Boraginaceae. The leaves and young aerial parts are used as medicine in headache, tension in inner canthus, pressure in the pit of stomach and sternum, uterine displacement and dysmenorrhoea. Objective: Pharmacognostic and Physico-chemical studies were carried out to facilitate use of correct species and standard raw material to ensure uniformity. Materials and Methods: Pharmacognostic studies of leaf and young stem of Heliotropium peruvianum were carried out. Physico-chemical parameters of the raw drug, viz., extractive values, ash values, formulation, besides weight per milliliter, …

A Multi-Centric Double-Blind Homoeopathic Pathogenetic Trial Of Cyclosporin, Goutam Rakshit, A Vichitra, Rajpal Rajpal, Sujata Choudhury, Vinay Singh
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Objective : To elicit the pathogenetic response of the drug Cyclosporin in homoeopathic potencies on apparently healthy human beings. Material and Methods : The drug Cyclosporin was proved by the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy through double-blind placebo-controlled trial. The study was conducted in two centres. The drug was proved in two potencies (6C and 30C) on 50 apparently healthy volunteers who were selected after conducting pre-trial medical examinations by the medical specialists and routine laboratory investigations. In the first phase the volunteers were given 56 doses (4 doses per day for 14 days) of placebo. In the next …

Evaluation Of Antiobesity Activity Of Fucus Vesiculosus, Vishnu Korukanti, Himabindu Ponnam, Butchi Akondi
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Background and Aim: The drug Fucus vesiculosus is used in alternative system of medicine and homoeopathy, for the treatment of obesity. But in homoeopathic literature survey, we found no substantial pharmacological evidence to prove its safety and efficacy. So, the study was taken up on this drug and evaluated it on different animal models (diet-induced and chemical-induced models) of obesity. Material and Methods: Obesity was induced in adult female Wistar albino rats (100-120 g) by feeding the rats with cafeteria diet for 42 days in diet-induced model and by administration of single intraperitoneal injection of Triton X-100 in chemical-induced model. …

Evidence-Based Homoeopathy: A Case Of Acute Paraphimosis With Balanitis, Chinta Raveendar, Kishan Banoth

Paraphimosis occurs when the foreskin of the uncircumcised or partially circumcised male is retracted behind the glans penis, develops venous and lymphatic congestion and cannot be returned to its normal position. This urological emergency impedes blood flow to the glans penis with potential for permanent damage and gangrene. In infants and young children, paraphimosis usually results from self-manipulation by the child or inappropriate retraction of the foreskin by the caretaker in misguided attempts at cleaning. In the sexually active adolescent or adult male, intercourse is a potential precipitant. Iatrogenic paraphimosis follows cystoscopy or bladder catheterisation if the foreskin is not …

The Effectiveness Of The Learning To Breathe Program On Adolescent Emotion Regulation, Stacie M. Metz, Jennifer L. Frank, Diane K. Reibel, Todd Cantrell, Richard Sanders, Patricia C. Broderick
Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers
This study assessed the effectiveness of a mindfulness-based program, Learning to BREATHE, on adolescent emotion regulation. Participants included 216 regular education public high school students with pretest and posttest data participating in the program or instruction-as-usual comparison condition. Program participants reported statistically lower levels of perceived stress and psychosomatic complaints and higher levels of efficacy in affective regulation. Program participants also evidenced statistically larger gains in emotion regulation skills including emotional awareness, access to regulation strategies, and emotional clarity. These findings provide promising evidence of the effectiveness of Learning to BREATHE on the development of key social-emotional learning skills.
An Evidence Based Recommendation For The Use Of 5% Human Albumin Vs. Normal Saline With Hypotension Secondary To Hypovolemia In Adult Post Operative Patients, 2013 Cedarville University
An Evidence Based Recommendation For The Use Of 5% Human Albumin Vs. Normal Saline With Hypotension Secondary To Hypovolemia In Adult Post Operative Patients, Katherine Anne Marshall
Master of Science in Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Projects
Problem: 5% human albumin is used very frequently in the hospital setting with hypotensive post-surgical patients. There are associated risks with the use of human albumin and it has been shown that normal saline is at least as effective in treating extreme hypotension in this patient population.
Significance: Associated risks that are present with the use of human albumin may be equal to those of the risks of whole blood transfusions. In addition weight gain and fluid retention are complications associated with the use of human albumin versus the use of normal saline. Furthermore, human albumin costs $40.59 more than …
