Investigations Into The Cellular Target Of 4-Trifluoromethoxy Chalcone Via Darts Method, Jordan Stacy 2021 Bellarmine University

Investigations Into The Cellular Target Of 4-Trifluoromethoxy Chalcone Via Darts Method, Jordan Stacy

Undergraduate Theses

Cellular drug target discovery is an important step in any drugs journey from bench to bedside. This is true for our lab's molecule of interest, the Chalcone. The Chalcone molecule and its derivatives have been identified as small, plant-derived secondary metabolites that, when interacting with human cancer cell lines, trigger apoptotic pathways leading to varying levels of cell death. One derivative, 4-Trifluoromethoxy Chalcone (4TFM), was identified through screenings as inducing the highest death rate in A549 cancer cells, in conjunction with having the lowest IC50, making it a good candidate to use in searching for the currently unknown cellular target …

084— Optimizing Conditions To Maximize Algae Growth For Biodiesel Production, Samantha Ross, Wady Jacoby, Daria Zhogina, Pavel Ananev, Lauren Saggese, Aiden Williams

GREAT Day Posters

Select subspecies of microalgae are considered to be the most promising candidates for third generation renewable resources of biodiesel. Algae not only ingest excess carbon emissions from the atmosphere, they also convert it into energy-dense lipids which can be harvested, and then transformed into biodiesel. However, before the fuel industry can adopt algae farming as a realistic alternative to fossil fuels, the process of harvesting algal lipids must be optimized further. Our research aims to make algal lipid extraction more realistic by determining the ideal growing conditions of the algae species Chlorella Vulgaris. Our research this semester focused on two …

Greenhouse Gas Emission Inefficiency Spillover Effects In European Countries, Levent Kutlu, Ran Wang 2021 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Greenhouse Gas Emission Inefficiency Spillover Effects In European Countries, Levent Kutlu, Ran Wang

School of Economics and Finance Faculty Publications

In our study, we examine whether spatial spillover effects exist for greenhouse gas emission efficiency for 38 European countries between 2005 and 2014. We find that inefficiencies of other countries would lead to lower efficiency levels for a country. This negative inefficiency spillover effect goes down till 2008 then goes up till 2011, then stays relatively stable after 2011. Any strategy to reduce inefficiencies of other countries could potentially improve the efficiency levels. We find that human development index shows significant positive impact on greenhouse gas emission efficiency levels. In particular, one standard deviation increase in human development index would …

Characterizing Pm2.5 Air Samples Of Northeast Mississippi, Harley Nabors 2021 University of Mississippi

Characterizing Pm2.5 Air Samples Of Northeast Mississippi, Harley Nabors

Honors Theses

Ambient air pollution has been associated with adverse health effects throughout the entire world. Although epidemiologists study air pollution extensively, rural areas are often the least understood. In 2020, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality used less than 10 air sampling locations across the state leaving a large gap in air quality knowledge. In this study, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) air samples were collected from three different rural Mississippi cities–Ackerman, Eupora, and Houston, in the summer of 2020. Following collection onto filters, elemental black carbon analysis and an oxidative potential assay were both used to characterize the samples of interest. …

Cyp2d6 Genetic Variation And Its Implication For Vivax Malaria Treatment In Madagascar, Rajeev K. Mehlotra, Andrea Gaedigk, Rosalind E. Howes, Tovonahary A. Rakotomanga, Arsene C. Ratsimbasoa, Peter A. Zimmerman

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Plasmodium vivax is one of the five human malaria parasite species, which has a wide geographical distribution and can cause severe disease and fatal outcomes. It has the ability to relapse from dormant liver stages (hypnozoites), weeks to months after clearance of the acute blood-stage infection. An 8-aminoquinoline drug primaquine (PQ) can clear the hypnozoites, and thus can be used as an anti-relapse therapeutic agent. Recently, a number of studies have found that its efficacy is compromised by polymorphisms in the cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) gene; decreased or absence of CYP2D6 activity contributes to PQ therapeutic failure. The …

Effective therapies for stroke are still limited due to its complex pathological manifestations. QiShenYiQi (QSYQ), a component-based Chinese medicine capable of reducing organ injury caused by ischemia/reperfusion, may offer an alternative option for stroke treatment and post-stroke recovery. Recently, we reported a beneficial effect of QSYQ for acute stroke via modulation of the neuroinflammatory response. However, if QSYQ plays a role in subacute stroke remains unknown. The pharmacological action of QSYQ was investigated in experimental stroke rats which underwent 90 min ischemia and 8 days reperfusion in this study. Neurological and locomotive deficits, cerebral infarction, brain edema, and BBB integrity …

Surface-Eroding Drug Delivery Films For Sequential And/Or Intermittent Release Of Psychoactive Drugs, Jason Price

Honors Theses

ABSTRACT JASON BLAKE PRICE: Surface-Eroding Drug Delivery Films for Sequential and/or

Intermittent Release of Psychoactive Drugs For patients with psychiatric diseases, adherence to medication schedules, medication

errors, and abuse are common issues. Promising new forms of therapy for these patients, such as micro-dosed lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), where patients receive 10-20% of a full dose every third day, present further drug delivery challenges. Sequential or intermittent release of drugs from an implanted device could ensure long-term drug compliance, automate drug dosing during the life of the implant, and eliminate potential for abuse and medication errors. To this end, we generated …

Sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction is a major contributor to the poor outcomes of septic shock. As an add-on with conventional sepsis management for over 15 years, the effect of Xuebijing injection (XBJ) on the sepsis-induced myocardial dysfunction was not well understood. The material basis of Xuebijing injection (XBJ) in managing infections and infection-related complications remains to be defined. A murine cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model and cardiomyocytes in vitro culture were adopted to study the influence of XBJ on infection-induced cardiac dysfunction. XBJ significantly improved the survival of septic-mice and rescued cardiac dysfunction in vivo. RNA-seq revealed XBJ attenuated …

Obesity is the single greatest risk factor for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Without intervention, most pediatric patients with NAFLD continue to gain excessive weight, making early, effective weight loss intervention key for disease treatment and prevention of NAFLD progression. Unfortunately, outside of a closely monitored research setting, which is not representative of the real world, lifestyle modification success for weight loss in children is low. Bariatric surgery, though effective, is invasive and can worsen NAFLD postoperatively. Thus, there is an evolving and underutilized role for pharmacotherapy in children, both for weight reduction and NAFLD management. In this perspective article, …

Development Of A Rapid Drug Detection Method For Insects Using Paper Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Psi-Ms), Alexandria Plyler 2021 Duquesne University

Development Of A Rapid Drug Detection Method For Insects Using Paper Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (Psi-Ms), Alexandria Plyler

Undergraduate Research and Scholarship Symposium

Insects have the ability to reflect the chemical environment that they have developed in. Thus, necrogenous insects can reflect the chemical environment of cadavers they have fed on. Forensic scientists can potentially utilize insect larvae as an alternate biological matrix to detect drugs in cadavers that are skeletonized, burned, or otherwise badly damaged. Analysis of insects using paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (PSI-MS), an analytical method requiring little to no sample preparation, could prove a rapid, cost-effective, and non-destructive alternative form of toxicological analysis. Traditional tissue analysis via GC and LC-MS often require lengthy sample preparation, use expensive reagents, and …

Journal of Mind and Medical Sciences

Prostate cancer represents the leading malignant tumor in men over 50 years of age with 400,000 new cases being diagnosed yearly in Europe. Even if the incidence rate is higher than the mortality rate, still there is an increasing trend when speaking of its mortality. The increasing incidence of the metabolic syndrome, the unhealthy lifestyle, the high lipid and Calcium intake, the high spread of infections with Human Papilloma Virus, Human Herpes Virus, the excess of androgen consumption and the longer life expectancy, are few of the main causes of prostate cancer increasing incidence. The new systemic therapies such as …

Health Communication Blindspot: A Case Study Of Harmful Algal Blooms In The South (Habits), Jaron Hoani King

Theses and Dissertations

A Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) is a complex natural event that occurs when algae is in its growth stage and creates a harmful toxin as waste. HABs create both ecologic and public health challenges. The hypothesis of this thesis is that state and federal governments have different readability scores when compared side-by-side as measured by Simple Measures of Gobbledygook (SMOG). Because governments are the entity that most often claims responsibility for shared resources, this case study represents a snapshot of current governmental messaging about HABs in the South Atlantic states. These states have a long history of HAB events in …

Makara Journal of Science

This study describes the development of N-benzyl-1,10-phenantrolinium salt as an antiplasmodium agent. The salt, that is, 1-(4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzyl)-1,10-phenanthrolin-1-ium bromide, was prepared using vanillin as the starting material in four simple synthetic steps. First, the alkylation of vanillin using diethyl sulfate produced 4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde in 79% yield. Second, the reduction of the protected vanillin by NaBH4 through the grinding method allowed us to obtain 4-ethoxy-3-methoxybenzyl alcohol in 96% yield. Next, the bromination of the benzyl alcohol under solvent-free condition led to the formation of the corresponding benzyl bromide, which in turn underwent bimolecular nucleophilic substitution with 1,10-phenanthroline to produce the desired …
