Passive Vibration On The Legs Reduces Peripheral And Systemic Arterial Stiffness, Alexei Wong, Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, Ryan Gil, Florence Vicil, Song-young Park, Arturo Figueroa 2011 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Passive Vibration On The Legs Reduces Peripheral And Systemic Arterial Stiffness, Alexei Wong, Marcos A. Sanchez-Gonzalez, Ryan Gil, Florence Vicil, Song-Young Park, Arturo Figueroa

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Intermittent leg exercise (10 × 1-min sets) with whole-body vibration (WBV) decreases brachial-ankle pulse-wave velocity (baPWV)1 and leg PWV (legPWV) but not aortic PWV.2 As baPWV is an index of systemic arterial stiffness3 mainly influenced by aortic PWV (∼58%) and legPWV (∼23%),4 previously published results1, 2 suggest that WBV affects baPWV through peripheral but not central PWV. The post-exercise decrease in PWV is associated with vasodilation in the exercised limb.5, 6 Similarly, intermittent WBV (3 × 3-min sets)7 or passive vibration (PV)8 has been shown to increase blood flow in …

Kinesiology and Public Health

Eight innovative senior level capstone engineering projects were completed at California Polytechnic State University (2008-present) involving (n=28) students (23 male/5 female). All projects involved the design of equipment to facilitate physical activity for people with disabilities. The effects on: i) learning design, ii) attitude towards people with disabilities, and iii) motivation to complete team design projects were analyzed through eight one-hour focus groups. This paper presents focus group findings using a constructivist approach and grounded theory to explore the overall student “learn by doing” experience. Results: (1) Approximately 19 (70%) of the students claimed the adapted physical activity …

Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker

Journal Articles

Fields studying movement generation, including robotics, psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience utilize concepts and tools related to the pervasiveness of variability in biological systems. The concept of variability and the measures for nonlinear dynamics used to evaluate this concept open new vistas for research in movement dysfunction of many types. This review describes innovations in the exploration of variability and their potential importance in understanding human movement. Far from being a source of error, evidence supports the presence of an optimal state of variability for healthy and functional movement. This variability has a particular organization and is characterized by a …

Objective: To evaluate reported fatigue levels and gait deficits in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) to determine the relationships that may exist between fatigue in patients with MS and alterations in gait mechanics.

Design: Cross-sectional.

Setting: Biomechanics laboratory.

Participants: Subjects with MS (n=32) and age- and sex-matched controls (n=30).

Interventions: None.

Main Outcome Measures: Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Modified Fatigue Index Scale (MFIS), and 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) to assess fatigue and general health. Biomechanical gait analysis was performed to measure peak joint torques and powers in the sagittal plane at the ankle, knee, and hip. Correlations …

Effectiveness Of Group Kickboxing As A Means To Improve Gait And Balance In Individuals With Ms, Kurt Jackson, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow, Christina Cooper, Harold L. Merriman 2011 University of Dayton

Effectiveness Of Group Kickboxing As A Means To Improve Gait And Balance In Individuals With Ms, Kurt Jackson, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow, Christina Cooper, Harold L. Merriman

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

In recent years, there has been a particular emphasis on identifying and delivering appropriate therapeutic interventions that address the significant balance and gait impairments that affect individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Group interventions implemented in community settings have been especially of interest, including tai chi classes. Recently, the authors conducted a preliminary study to examine whether group kick-boxing, which requires more vigorous movements, might be a feasible intervention. Initial findings showed promise and led the authors to pursue a more rigorous follow-up study, with the objective of determining whether a 5-week group kickboxing class improved clinical measures of balance and …

New Insights Into Anterior Cruciate Ligament Deficiency And Reconstruction Through The Assessment Of Knee Kinematic Variability In Terms Of Nonlinear Dynamics, Leslie M. Decker, Constantina O. Moraiti, Nikolaos Stergiou, Anastasios D. Georgoulis

Journal Articles

Purpose

Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) occur frequently, particularly in young adult athletes, and represent the majority of the lesions of knee ligaments. Recent investigations suggest that the assessment of kinematic variability using measures of nonlinear dynamics can provide with important insights with respect to physiological and pathological states. The purpose of the present article was to critically review and synthesize the literature addressing ACL deficiency and reconstruction from a nonlinear dynamics standpoint.

Methods

A literature search was carried out in the main medical databases for studies published between 1990 and 2010.

Results

Seven studies investigated knee kinematic …

From The W-Method To The Canonical-Dissipative Method For Studying Uni-Manual Rhythmic Behavior, Dobromir Dotov, Till D. Frank 2011 University of Nebraska at Omaha

From The W-Method To The Canonical-Dissipative Method For Studying Uni-Manual Rhythmic Behavior, Dobromir Dotov, Till D. Frank

Journal Articles

A novel method for the analysis of repetitive limb behavior oscillation is presented. It is based on a model used to account for self-sustained limit cycles that involve energy pumping compensating for dissipative processes. The experiment involved a uni-manual pendulum swinging task paced at five frequencies. The median frequency corresponded to the resonant one for the chosen pendulum and hand parameters. We applied the model-based analysis to explore the relationship between behavioral observables and model parameters not available from previous methods. Oscillation amplitude and energy, and motor variability were the behavioral observables we focused on while energy pumping, attractor strength, …

Real-Time Feedback As A Method Of Monitoring Walking Velocity During Gait Analysis, Sarah T. Ridge, James G. Richards 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

Real-Time Feedback As A Method Of Monitoring Walking Velocity During Gait Analysis, Sarah T. Ridge, James G. Richards

Faculty Publications

When quantifying the mechanics of gait, it is important to ensure that subjects maintain a consistent walking velocity during gait analysis trials. Most methods of measuring walking velocity do not produce data until after the subject has completed the trial. This often results in discarding completed trials from analysis because the subject's velocity was not within an acceptable range. Real-time feedback of position data can be used to help subjects adjust their walking velocity during the trial, when necessary. Results from 14 subjects who participated in gait analysis using real-time feedback to monitor their walking velocity show that they were …
