Factors Impacting Swimming Participation And Competence: A Qualitative Report, Todd E. Layne, Carol C. Irwin, Jennifer Renee Pharr, Richard L. Irwin 2020 University of Memphis

Factors Impacting Swimming Participation And Competence: A Qualitative Report, Todd E. Layne, Carol C. Irwin, Jennifer Renee Pharr, Richard L. Irwin

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Drowning continues to be a major cause of death for children, especially among minority groups. USA Swimming commissioned studies in 2008 and 2010 to look at swimming ability or inability, an associated drowning variable. The 2010 study showed alarming high percentages regarding insufficient swimming skill for many demographic groups. The current study’s purpose was to provide further analysis of variables which emerged from 2010 study and how these variables are affecting all US populations. Focus group interviews accomplished in three regionally diverse US cities asked participants (3=fathers; 12=mothers) about their personal history with swimming, perceptions concerning swimming in general, and …

Market To Table: A Physical Activity And Healthful Eating Approach To Diabetes Prevention, Alison Schwartz 2020 James Madison University

Market To Table: A Physical Activity And Healthful Eating Approach To Diabetes Prevention, Alison Schwartz

Masters Theses, 2020-current

According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (2019), one out of three US adults has prediabetes and healthful eating and physical activity can help to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes. This study examines physical activity and healthful eating behavior following a 6-week Market to Table intervention that includes an experiential workshop series among participants who have prediabetes or are at risk for prediabetes. Current participants or graduates of the Sentara RMH Medical Center Diabetes Prevention Program and James Madison University faculty or staff who had been diagnosed with prediabetes or are at risk were …

Analyzing Change-Of-Direction And The Laterally Resisted Split Squat: Incorporating A Lateral Vector Into The Single Leg Squat, Derek Maddy 2020 Boise State University

Analyzing Change-Of-Direction And The Laterally Resisted Split Squat: Incorporating A Lateral Vector Into The Single Leg Squat, Derek Maddy

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Improving change of direction (COD) with the use of strength training has led to mixed results. To date, the modified single leg squat (MSLS) and the bilateral squat (BS) have been successfully used to improve COD, with equal improvement. COD is primarily performed at a 45-75° frontal plane angle; however, the MSLS and BS are performed at a 90° frontal plane angle. Based on the force vector theory, it is proposed that a more mechanically similar strength training exercise, the Laterally Resisted Split Squat (LRSS), be used. The purpose of this study is to compare COD with the LRSS, MSLS, …

Integrating The Functional Movement Screen ® Into Strength And Conditioning Programs, Quincy Johnson, Chantel C. Coleman, Timothy Baghurst 2020 Oklahoma State University

Integrating The Functional Movement Screen ® Into Strength And Conditioning Programs, Quincy Johnson, Chantel C. Coleman, Timothy Baghurst

Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology

  • The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the Functional Movement Screen (FMS®) and how it can be integrated into strength and conditioning programs of all levels.
  • We utilized current literature and previous FMS ® field experience to develop and recommend approaches for implementing FMS® protocols into strength and conditioning programs.
  • Description of FMS® Movements: The FMS® is a comprehensive biomechanical efficiency screen which is comprised of seven movements that have been deemed fundamental to athletic performance (7). Those movements include the; deep squat, hurdle step, in-line lunge, shoulder mobility, active straight-leg raise, trunk stability push-up, and …

Effects Of Bingocize® On Overall Physical Activity, Functional Performance, Blood Glucose Level, Sleep Quantity, And Quality Among Older Adults In Assisted-Living Facilities, Sepehr Rassi 2020 Western Kentucky University

Effects Of Bingocize® On Overall Physical Activity, Functional Performance, Blood Glucose Level, Sleep Quantity, And Quality Among Older Adults In Assisted-Living Facilities, Sepehr Rassi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Bingocize® has been established as an effective falls prevention exercise program for older adults, but its effects on older adults residing in assisted-living facilities have not been examined. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effects of Bingocize® on overall physical activity level, functional performance, blood glucose level, sleep quantity and quality in older adults who live in assisted-living facilities. Participants (N = 13; mean age 86.23 ± 3.90) were asked to participate in Bingocize® while wearing activity trackers (Fitbit Charge 3 HR) for 10 weeks. The activity trackers were used to assess the average number of steps …

The Effects Of Exercise On Mental Health, Xavier A. Pinex 2020 University of South Dakota

The Effects Of Exercise On Mental Health, Xavier A. Pinex

Honors Thesis

Exercise is an extremely important aspect towards positive mental health. Multiple studies have been done previously that show one benefit or another that exercise has towards mental health, but previously there had been no attempt to summarize the findings of these studies. The benefits that exercise has to an individual’s mental health are numerous, but despite this exercise is an underutilized tool in the quest for better mental health. There are many variables that affect the benefits of exercise to an individual’s mental health and it is important to understand all these variables to understand how to properly exercise to …

The Effects Of Strength And Conditioning On Functional Movement Screen™ Scores In Secondary School Basketball., Rollin Ross Dexter, Christopher P. Renggli, James May, Lindsay Larkins 2020 University of Idaho

The Effects Of Strength And Conditioning On Functional Movement Screen™ Scores In Secondary School Basketball., Rollin Ross Dexter, Christopher P. Renggli, James May, Lindsay Larkins

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Purpose: Injury prevention and mitigation are among the primary responsibilities of Athletic Trainers. Research has indicated that basketball players at the secondary-school level suffer up to 2.1 time loss injuries (TLI) per 1,000 athletic exposures (AE). It has been suggested that Functional Movement Screen (FMS™) composite and individual task scores may help determine injury risk. Researchers have suggested that a variety of strength and conditioning strategies may positively alter both composite and individual FMS™ task scores and reduce movement asymmetry. Methods: During a retrospective analysis of the records of all junior varsity and varsity basketball players at one secondary school …

Effective Treatment Of An Apparent Lateral Ankle Sprain Using A Regional Interdependent Approach With Positional Release Therapy And Mulligan Concept, Joshua K. Underwood 2020 University of Nebraska, Kearney

Effective Treatment Of An Apparent Lateral Ankle Sprain Using A Regional Interdependent Approach With Positional Release Therapy And Mulligan Concept, Joshua K. Underwood

Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Sciences: Official Journal of the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association

Objective: Present a pair of clinical cases demonstrating the utilization of regional interdependent (RI) evaluation and treatment in an apparent lateral ankle sprain. The utilization of both Positional Release Therapy (PRT) and Mulligan Concept (MC) on secondary school athletes with an apparent acute lateral ankle sprain are presented. Background: Lateral ankle sprains are a common injury in athletics. While the MC has been shown to be an effective manual therapy in ankle sprains, if the treatment is not pain-free it is considered not warranted. The concept of RI attempts to connect apparently unconnected dysfunctions within the body which collectively contribute …
