Reburns Of High Severity Patches: Effects On Ponderosa Pine Regeneration And Plant Community Composition, Nadav Mouallem
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Fall 2023 to Present
The area burned in high severity fire as well as the proportion of fires burning at high severity have been increasing in southwestern ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests since the 1980s. These fires often contain large patches (>100 ha) of 100% tree mortality, which are a concern as they can lead to the establishment of nonnative species and conversion to non-forest vegetation. And, with an increasing amount of fire on the landscape, high severity patches are reburning. However, information on the ecological trajectory of reburns of high-severity patches as well as the utility of remotely sensed burn severity metrics …

Enzyme-Enhanced Ecf Bleaching: Improving Pulp Bleachability And Reducing Its Environmental Footprint, Bingyao Zhou
Dissertations
Enzymes have emerged as effective biocatalysts and environmentally friendly agents in pulp bleaching processes. Despite their potential, the fundamental chemistry underlying enzyme action on pulp fibers during bleaching remains poorly understood, limiting their widespread industrial application. This dissertation aims to investigate how enzymes interact with the chemical components of pulp fibers and their impact on elemental chlorine-free (ECF) bleaching in terms of pulp brightness, chemical consumption, and AOX generation.
Enzymatic pretreatment prior to ECF bleaching sequences was conducted on hardwood and softwood kraft pulp. Xylanase pretreatment significantly reduced chlorine dioxide consumption and enhanced pulp brightness in hardwood kraft pulp. Optimal …
The Role Of Forest Disturbance And Habitat Characteristics In Shaping Arthropod Ecology.,

The Role Of Forest Disturbance And Habitat Characteristics In Shaping Arthropod Ecology., Kane Alec Lawhorn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disturbances in forests often generate dead wood, which is an important resource for a variety of arthropods. In tropical wet forests where fire is rare, lightning and branchfalls are common disturbances that create canopy gaps with associated large amounts of localized dead wood. By contrast, prescribed fire is a common disturbance in temperate forest that creates habitat heterogeneity and widely dispersed dead wood resources. The ecological effects of these disturbances on arthropod communities are largely unknown. This dissertation investigates how disturbance and habitat associations in both tropical and temperate forest shape arthropod ecology. Throughout, I primarily focus on beetles, ants, …

Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas) And Computer Software To Assess Effects Of Cover Crops On Cash Crop Volumetric Mass And Plant Height, Carlos Andres Garcia Patlan
Theses and Dissertations
Sustainability in agriculture starts with the health of soil-- from its productivity and fertility, to its ability to retain water during droughts and allow for drainage during rain. One approach of improving soil health is the use of cover crops, a practice associated with improved nutrient availability in soils, the promotion of soil biodiversity and organic matter to improve density and structure, effective weed management, and ultimately improved yields of subsequent cash crops. Assessing the cumulative impacts of cover crops is difficult, with various metrics and indicators. Crop dry weight may be a way to predict the effects cover crops …

Evaluation Of Subjective And Objective Workload Of Forestry Professionals, Hasini L. M. Mapatunage

The Southern United States accounts for about 40% of the productive timberland of the country and is known as the wood basket of the United States. Timber logging is an important contributor to South Carolina’s economy. Feller-buncher, skidder and loader operators play a vital role in the timber industry of South Carolina. However, their job is far from easy, especially as there are only a few members of a logging crew. They have to operate complex heavy machinery in challenging terrains while ensuring the efficient harvesting of timber, which demands extraordinary skills, precision, and better decision-making, leading to excessive mental …

A Seasonal Decomposition Comparison Between Forest And Turf Habitats: Implications For Climate Change, Amanda Shirmer
DePaul Discoveries
Decomposition is an essential ecosystem service in which microorganisms breakdown organic matter. This process improves soil health and acts as a vital step in global carbon cycles. In this study, we examined decomposition rates and associated soil properties in turf and forest habitats across summer and fall seasons in order to determine how land management practices and climate change may be altering local decomposition regimes. Our study determined that there was a statistically significant difference between decomposition rates in turf and forest ecosystems (P=0.003) and a significant difference in decomposition rate across season (P

Environmental DNA (eDNA) analyses are an increasingly popular tool for assessing biodiversity. eDNA sampling that uses invertebrates, or invertebrate DNA (iDNA), has become a more common method in mammal biodiversity studies where biodiversity is assessed via diet analysis of different coprophagous or hematophagous invertebrates. The carrion feeding family of beetles (Silphidae: Coleoptera, Latreille (1807)), have not yet been established as a viable iDNA source in primary scientific literature, yet could be useful indicators for tracking biodiversity in forested ecosystems. Silphids find carcasses of varying size for both food and reproduction, with some species having host preference for small mammals; therefore, …
