Fuel Conditions Associated With Native And Exotic Grasses In A Subtropical Dry Forest In Puerto Rico, Jarrod M. Thaxton, Skip J. Van Bloem, Stefanie Whitmire

Publications

Exotic grasses capable of increasing frequency and intensity of anthropogenic fire have invaded subtropical and tropical dry forests worldwide. Since many dry forest trees are susceptible to fire, this can result in decline of native species and loss of forest cover. While the contribution of exotic grasses to altered fire regimes has been well documented, the role of native grasses in contributing to fuel loads in dry forest has received little attention. We assessed differences in fuel conditions among native and exotic grasses within a subtropical dry forest preserve in Puerto Rico. We quantified fine fuel loads, fuel continuity, and …

Notes On The Diet Of The Malay Civet (Viverra Tangalunga) And Other Civets In Logged And Unlogged Lowland Dipterocarp Rain Forests In Sabah, Borneo, Christina P. Colon, John B. Sugau 2012 Kingsborough Community College

Notes On The Diet Of The Malay Civet (Viverra Tangalunga) And Other Civets In Logged And Unlogged Lowland Dipterocarp Rain Forests In Sabah, Borneo, Christina P. Colon, John B. Sugau

Publications and Research

Civet diets were examined in a logged and unlogged Bornean rain forest. Malay civets (Viverra tangalunga) consumed invertebrates, fruit, rodents, insectivores, birds, snakes and lizards, and appear to show preference for centipedes and scorpions. Other civet species consumed fruit, such as figs, Connarus sp. and Annona sp., particularly in the unlogged forest, but also consumed invertebrates and vertebrates. Reduced fruit consumption observed in the logged forest may be due to lower availability and may be offset by increased consumption of invertebrates. The increased overlap in diet between Malay civets and other civets in disturbed areas may lead to …

Evidence For The Origin Of The B Genome Of Bread Wheat Based On Chloroplast Dna, NADIA HAIDER 2012 TÜBİTAK

Evidence For The Origin Of The B Genome Of Bread Wheat Based On Chloroplast Dna, Nadia Haider

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The hexaploid bread wheat Triticum aestivum L. (AABBDD) is thought to have originated through one or more rare hybridization events between Aegilops tauschii (DD) and the tetraploid Emmer wheat T. turgidum subsp. dicoccon (AABB). The progenitor of the A genome of T. aestivum has generally been accepted to be T. urartu. The origin of the B genome, however, is controversial and still relatively unknown. Research has found the B genome in T. turgidum to be closely similar to the S genome in section Sitopsis of Aegilops L.; the Sitopsis diploid species were thus proposed as the probable maternal parent in …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) callus cultures grown in the presence of different concentrations (0-100 µM) of cadmium were assayed for growth, Cd accumulations, and antioxidative responses. Cadmium inhibited the growth of calli by 25% and 46% at 75 and 100 µM Cd concentrations, respectively. Cadmium concentration in the calli increased with an increased Cd supply in the growth medium. Calli accumulated 334 mg Cd kg^{-1} of their dry weight at 100 µM Cd. Cadmium induced oxidative stress, which was indicated by modulating antioxidant (glutathione and \alpha-tocopherol) levels and antioxidative enzymes. The effect of Cd on glutathione (GSH) was dose-dependent. The …

Plant And Insect Diversity Along An Experimental Gradient Of Larch-Birch Mixtures In Chinese Boreal Forests, Jing Li, Juan Shi, Youqing Luo, Kari Heliovaara

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Maintaining and increasing biodiversity level especially in pure plantations is one important way to improve the resistance of forests to pests in Chinese boreal forests. The present study tested the hypothesis that the increased degree of tree species mixture (quantified by the stem proportion of Betula platyphylla Suk. and Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) can affect the species richness and diversity of understory and insects. Twenty-one plots, ranging from pure larch stand to pure birch stand, were sampled in several thinned forests in a Chinese boreal forest area. Data of environmental factors, understory plant species and insect assemblage were collected from …

Morphological And Biochemical Evaluation Of Selected Almond [Prunus Dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb] Genotypes In Northern Serbia, Slavica Colic, Vera Rakonjac, Gordan Zec, Dragan Nikolic, Milica Fotiric Aksic

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In order to determine the overall degree of polymorphism and detect similarities among genotypes, 19 almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb] genotypes were studied. Variation in traits related to phenology, morphology, and fruit quality was observed, and the results indicated a high morphological diversity of almond genotypes. The majority of important correlations were determined among the traits representing nut size (nut width, nut length, nut thickness, and nut weight) and leaf size (leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area). The lack of correlation between kernel size and chemical compounds enables the creation of a new almond cultivar with large kernels and …

Influence Of Eccentric Drawbar Force On Power Delivery Efficiency Of A Wheeled Tractor, Mirko Simikic, Nebojsa Dedovic, Lazar Savin, Milan Tomic, Hasan Hüseyi̇n Si̇lleli̇, Ondrej Ponjican

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Power delivery efficiency shows how much engine power is used for a tractor drawbar. Eccentric traction is a factor influencing the power delivery efficiency of a wheeled tractor. It occurs as a consequence of the offset position of a tractor implement, that is, when the traction line of the tractor and resistance line of the implement are parallel and do not coincide. This paper presents research on the power delivery efficiency of wheeled tractors and its dependence on wheel slippage of central and eccentric drawbar forces on unplowed and plowed stubble. For this purpose, mathematical models and one algorithm were …
