The present study investigates the impact of heat moisture treatment (HMT) on the utilization of dietary fibers from red lentil hulls and wheat bran and its subsequent effect on gut microbiota and short-chain fatty acid production. HMT significantly decreased the water absorption index in red lentil hulls but increased it in wheat bran. For resistant starch (RS), HMT elevated its content in red lentil hulls but diminished it in wheat bran. In terms of dietary fiber content, HMT increased soluble dietary fiber in red lentil hulls. However, carbohydrate utilization and SCFA production by gut microbiota did not significantly change after …

Plant-waste-derived bioactive compounds have generated growing interest recently. In this context, this project examined the phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, antimicrobial activity, and antibiofilm capability of the seed extract of Phoenix dactylifera. Six date seed varieties (Fardh, Sukarri, Negal, Majdool, Zahidi, and Khadrawy) were studied. In this study, a novel ultrasound-assisted extraction technique is compared with the conventional extraction method (maceration using 80% ethanol), taking into account both the quality and quantity of polyphenols. In this research, the dietary fibers (DFs) from ginseng residue were extracted by employing three different extraction methods (alkaline: AL, acidic: AC, enzymatic: EN). The extracted DFs were characterized in terms of their structural and functional properties. The results clearly showed that, regardless of the extraction methods, all DF samples exhibited representative infrared spectral features. The DF extracted by AC (citric acid) had more porous structures with a looser configuration, in conjunction with high apparent viscosity, whereas the DF extracted by EN (α-amylase and protease) exhibited higher thermal stability. The results of our study underline the significance of the explicit consideration of consumer and producer heterogeneity and the size and type of the locality when analyzing the market and welfare impacts of the ‘Buy Local’ trend. In addition to providing important new insights on the market and welfare impacts of the ‘Buy Local’ trend, our analysis can also provide a valuable theoretical grounding for empirical studies aimed at quantifying the economic impacts of the trend in different food product markets as well as the impact of current and emerging policies affecting the markets for local foods.

This research explores the intersection of sustainable food practices and community connection in the Byron Shire, New South Wales Australia. This study specifically focuses on how practices such as composting, organic agriculture, farmers markets, and shared meals encourage both environmental well-being and social bonds. This project is presented as a 21 minute documentary titled Harvesting Connections, which included five semi-structured interviews with community members, including local farmers, home gardeners, market managers, and community garden leaders. This study examines the differences in food availability between tourist and rural markets in Bali, focusing on the factors contributing to a diet shift in Bali. Using a mixed-methods approach—including interviews with local residents, observational surveys, and a literature review—this research highlights the influence of tourism, social media, and government policies on food choices and accessibility. Findings reveal a noticeable increase in processed foods in tourist areas, driven by demand for convenience and "Instagrammable" options, while rural markets maintain a higher prevalence of whole foods despite the creeping presence of packaged products. Sustainable pest management requires growers and regional land managers to consider the relationships among pest management practices, pest and natural enemy communities, crop loss, and multi-scalar habitat complexity. However, the causal links among these variables, in particular potential interactions between landscape and local-scale habitat complexity, remain underexplored. In the context of organically managed strawberry crops in California’s Central Coast, we tested the independent effects of landscape and local habitat complexity gradients on arthropod communities and crop loss using a piecewise structural equation model (PSEM). Black sorghum contains a high amount of anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, whereas white sorghum predominantly comprises phenolic acids. Polyphenols covalently and non-covalently interact with protein, whereas the structure of both compounds affects these interactions. This study investigated the interactions between phenolic acids, anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins and prolamin, which is the major protein fraction in sorghum, and their effect on the pasting properties of white and black, whole and milled sorghum using different chemical agents. Urea increased the pasting viscosity of black sorghum, but not that of white sorghum, indicating that hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions between prolamin and anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins play …

This study aimed to compare the effects of different conservation methods on the biochemical quality and antioxidant activity of mint, celery, parsley, and laurel. The plants were subjected to oven-drying at two temperatures (30 and 50°C), microwave drying at different powers (100, 300 and 600W), refrigeration for 24 hours, and freezing for 24 hours, 7 days and 40 days). The moisture content and dry weight were measured for each method. The total phenolic content, flavonoids level, and antioxidant activity were evaluated in fresh and dried plants. Recently, natural additives like turmeric (Curcuma longa) have attracted attention for their antimicrobial properties and their potential to reduce the reliance on antibiotics in poultry feed. Shallots from Brebes, also called Bima Brebes, have a more pungent aroma compared to other varieties. Its high demand results in increased prices in the market, leading to frequent cases of fraud wherein Bima Brebes shallots are replaced with other types of shallots. This study aimed to develop an analytical method using gas chromatography–flame ionization detector (GC-FID) fingerprinting combined with chemometrics to authenticate Bima Brebes shallots. Essential oils were extracted through ultrasonic hydrodistillation, followed by organoleptic, refractive index, GC-FID fingerprinting and chemometric analysis. Wheat is one of the most important cereal crops worldwide, but the production and productivity of wheat is affected by heat stress. A field experiment using an alpha lattice design with seven blocks was conducted on 35 elite wheat genotypes in the Terai region of Nepal to identify the most appropriate trait resulting in a high-yielding wheat genotype with high tolerance to heat stress. The development of innovative food packaging technologies, particularly those capable of monitoring freshness, has become increasingly important in the food industry. This research explores the development of a pH-responsive freshness sensor using polyvinyl alcohol–red cabbage (PVA/RC) nanofibers. The nanofibers are fabricated through the electrospinning technique and meticulously analyzed via scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results underscore the fine structure of the nanofiber matrix, with an average diameter of ~68 nm. Changes in land use and land cover (LULC) are critical for evaluating global spatiotemporal trends, especially regarding climate change and urbanization. This study investigates the dynamics of Landsat surface temperature (LST) in response to LULC changes and their effects on the seasonal microclimate in Kasur District, Pakistan. Using the Google Earth Engine platform, we employed a random forest algorithm to detect LULC changes (cropland, forest, built-up, fallow, barren, and water) and analyze seasonal spectral indices from Landsat imagery for 1988, 2002, and 2022. Single-use plastics (SUP), which are extensively utilized in food packaging, are one notable cause for the constantly growing littering issue. Ginseng (Panax sp.) is a medicinal plant used for its purported health benefits, primarily in East Asian countries. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant increase in sales of dietary supplements, including ginseng supplements, to purportedly support immune health and provide other health benefits.
