Impacts Of Corn Price And Imported Beef Price On Domestic Beef Price In South Korea, Gwanseon Kim, Tyler Mark
Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
South Korea is one of the largest beef importing countries in the world. Australia, USA, and New Zealand provide the majority of beef they import. The objective of this study is to evaluate the price relationship of Korean cattle and corn, prices of the imported beef and corn, and prices of Korean cattle and imported beef. We examine threshold points using threshold vector autoregressive (TVAR) model by assuming the presence of nonlinearity. We find that there are two thresholds in Australian beef price with first difference data. This study finds that the current Korean beef price is positively affected by …

Tourists consider many factors, including health, when choosing travel destinations. The potential for exposure to novel or foreign diseases alone can deter travelers from selecting high-risk locations for disease transmission. The 2015–2016 Zika Virus (ZIKV) outbreak in the Americas and Caribbean prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This study investigated factors that may contribute to travel avoidance to areas experiencing ZIKV transmission while also considering different levels of health concern and awareness among groups with varying demographics. An online survey was administered February 10–12, 2016 to a sample of U.S. residents …

Biotic And Abiotic Factors Predicting The Global Distribution And Population Density Of An Invasive Large Mammal, Jesse S. Lewis, Mathew L. Farnsworth, Christopher L. Burdett, David M. Theobald, Miranda Gray, Ryan S. Miller
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
Biotic and abiotic factors are increasingly acknowledged to synergistically shape broad-scale species distributions. However, the relative importance of biotic and abiotic factors in predicting species distributions is unclear. In particular, biotic factors, such as predation and vegetation, including those resulting from anthropogenic land-use change, are underrepresented in species distribution modeling, but could improve model predictions. Using generalized linear models and model selection techniques, we used 129 estimates of population density of wild pigs (Sus scrofa) from 5 continents to evaluate the relative importance, magnitude, and direction of biotic and abiotic factors in predicting population density of an invasive large mammal …

The Effect Of Lupinus Albus On Growth Performance, Body Composition And Satiety Hormones Of Male Pigs Immunized Against Gonadotrophin Releasing Factor, Karen Moore, Bruce Mullan, Jae Cheol Kim, Frank R. Dunshea
Animal production and livestock research articles
Two hundred and ninety four pigs were used with the aim to develop a dietary management strategy using Lupinus albus L. (albus lupins) to reduce the increase in feed intake and subsequent increase in carcass fatness in pigs immunized against gonadotrophin releasing factor (immunocastrates; IC males) and entire male pigs in the late finishing stage. From day (d) 0 to 28, IC males fed the control diet grew faster (p = 0.009) than entire males fed the control diet but there was no difference in growth rate between sexes for pigs fed albus lupins for 14 days pre-slaughter (Albus 14) …

Yield Gains In Dry Beans In The U.S., George Vandemark, Mark A. Brick, James D. Kelly, Juan M. Osorno, Carlos A. Urrea
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
INTRODUCTION Yield Gains can be estimated by comparing On-Farm yields vs. Potential yield (a.k.a., realized yield) or measured in common trials. The difference between On-Farm yield and Potential yield is known as the Yield Gap. Plant breeders primarily focus on increasing Potential yield while also attempting to optimize the interaction between genotype, environment, and agronomic practices to increase On-Farm yield and reduce the Yield Gap. In recent years, scientists in developing countries and the U.S. have made major advances in dry bean disease resistance, stress tolerance, and increased yield (Kelly, 2004). Agronomic and biotechnological tools have contributed to these achievements. …

INTRODUCTION Nitrogen (N) deficiency is present in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) fields in most production regions in Central America and the Caribbean (CA/C), especially on small hillside farms where no or sub-optimum levels of fertilizer are used. Under these conditions, Rhizobium inoculants could represent a cheap and effective input to increase bean yield. Despite the potential benefits from increased biological nitrogen fixation, Rhizobium inoculation is rarely used by farmers in CA/C. Nodulation and nitrogen fixation (N2) of bean cultivars in response to Rhizobium inoculation is quite variable due to several biological and edaphic factors (Graham et al. 2003). …

Using The Vehicle Routing Problem To Reduce Field Completion Times With Multiple Machines, Hasan Seyyedhasani, Joseph S. Dvorak
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
The Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) is a powerful tool used to express many logistics problems, yet unlike other vehicle routing challenges, agricultural field work consists of machine paths that completely cover a field. In this work, the allocation and ordering of field paths among a number of available machines has been transformed into a VRP that enables optimization of completion time for the entire field. A basic heuristic algorithm (a modified form of the common Clarke-Wright algorithm) and a meta-heuristic algorithm, Tabu Search, were employed for optimization. Both techniques were evaluated through computer simulations in two fields: a hypothetical basic …
