Turf Grass Sod Production Utilizing Hydroponic Systems, Raed Sameeh Raja Hussian
Aridland Agriculture Theses
Turf as a cover is a very essential component in enhancing the aesthetics and in climate modification of the landscape in arid regions. The grasses employed for turf production are cultivable grass species of the poaceae family in the class monocots. It can considerably withstand the stress of traffic and mowing provided right grass species are selected and sod production undertaken. The UAE is characterized by a bi-seasonal Mediterranean climate with high temperature and low rainfall. Like in any desert ecosystems, soils are poor in organic matter, with relatively low biological activities in UAE. In the present research, two warm …

Physiological Parameters, Isoenzymes And Hormonal Profiling In Different Varieties Of Date Palm In United Arab Emirates, Saeed Rashed Hamad Al Shamsi
Aridland Agriculture Theses
The present investigation was carried out to explore the physiological changes in early, mid and late varieties of date palms in United Arab Emirates. The concentrations of biochemicals and antioxidant compounds, activities of antioxidant enzymes with their isoenzyme profiles, endogenous phytohormone contents were studied from preflowering, flowering, and post-flowering stages. Two varieties each from early (Shaham, Khanezi), mid (Barhee, Nabthasaif) and late (Khasab, Fardh) flowering types were used in the study. The protein content was higher in early varieties in preflowering stage, but lower in other two varieties. The phenol showed an opposite trend to protein. Ascorbic acid, reduced glutathione …

Agricultural Intensification Can Preserve The Brazilian Cerrado: Applying Lessons From Mato Grosso And Goia's To Brazil’S Last Agricultural Frontier, Stephanie A. Spera
Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications
Food security and climate change are two pressing issues shaping the future of tropical land use. Brazil, home to abundant land that is rich in carbon, water, and biodiversity and often cleared for agropastoral and renewable energy purposes, is the ideal location for studying socioeconomic and environmental trade-offs of land use dynamics. Here, I use recent (2000–2016) land-use land-cover change dynamics in the established agricultural states of Mato Grosso and Goia's to demonstrate how incentivizing intensive agricultural practices and improving degraded pastures may be a means by which Brazil can increase agricultural production while conserving the remainder of the Cerrado. …

The Bracero Program In The Arkansas Delta: The Power Held By Planter Elite, William Chase Whittington
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This paper examines the Bracero Program and its implementation from the start of World War II to the end of the program in 1964. Farmers and planters in America needed a sufficient labor supply once the war started, and Mexico became the main supplier. The Bracero Program was initiated as a war effort and meant to only last until the end of the war, but the planter elite had far different intentions once they realized how productive and inexpensive the program could be. This paper identifies the leading causes for how the Bracero Program was able to last over twenty …

The Influence Of Visual Storytelling On The Occupational Aspirations Of Non-Agricultural Undergraduate Students, Hanan Marie Southard
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The agricultural industry has been experiencing a shortage in qualified college graduates to fill its numerous open positions in recent years. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of visual storytelling on the occupational aspirations of non-agricultural undergraduate students. Social media channels, virtual storytelling and the higher education classroom provide a unique opportunity to convey information about and recruit students into the agricultural career field. The diffusion of innovation model provides the framework for the introduction of agricultural jobs in a non-agricultural business classroom while the social cognitive theory provides the understanding of the importance of self-efficacy …

Evaluating The Impact Of An All-Vegetable Protein Supplement Containing Fat Emulsifiers And Probiotics On Broiler Performance, Jordan Weil
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Currently, several niche markets, such as organic and “all natural”, are marketed within the poultry industry. However, little research has been undertaken to determine the cost-effectiveness of poultry diets used to produce chicken within these markets. Specifically, the economics and resulting profits associated with raising chicken with antibiotic-free, all-vegetable (AV) diets are not evaluated. As national chain restaurants such as Chick-fil-A and Panera Bread begin to mandate poultry suppliers raise chicken without antibiotics and use AV diets, it becomes increasingly important to evaluate the economics for integrators. Given the rapidly changing feeding strategies necessary to respond to consumers’ and wholesalers’ …

Qualitative Analysis Of Social Capital In Arkansas – A Case Study Based Approach, Valerie Kilders
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite the vast research on social capital in general, only very little research is focused on the quality of social capital. While some research studies incorporated aspects that are associated with the quality of social capital, they often take a one dimensional approach that fails to take the different aspects of the topic into consideration. In order to gain more insights into this I conducted a series of semi-structured interviews in three rural counties in Arkansas. The counties were selected on the basis of a social capital index of all U.S. counties using quantitative measures. I used a guide on …

The Role Of Utah Farmers In Farm To School Programming, John L. Hawley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This purpose of this study was to describe Utah farmers’ role in farm to school (FTS) programming and their interest in institutional marketing of local foods. The researcher sent a survey to farmers belonging to the Utah Farm Bureau to discover the role they play in FTS in Utah.
Respondents held positive attitudes toward FTS programming and agreed that building relationships with community members and increasing awareness of local food were benefits. They cited a lack of information about schools seeking to purchase local products and restriction of growing seasons as barriers to their participation in FTS. They displayed their …

Advancing Chemical Characterization Of Feedstuffs Commonly Included In Dairy Cow Rations, Ellan I. Dufour
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Chemical composition of feedstuffs commonly included in dairy cow rations is variable within a feed type, which raises a potential for nutrient inadequacies for an animal. There are multiple methods to characterize and determine chemical composition including in vitro and in situ methods, as well as refining processing procedures to produce a consistent feed product. Feed component digestibilities can also be evaluated using similar methods.
Research reported in Chapter 2 focuses on characterizing chemical composition and determining the digestibility of fiber and protein fractions of corn dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) originating from seven different production sites across Michigan, …

The Cost Of Forward Contracting In Mississippi River Barge Freight And Cif Nola Markets, Bradley John Isbell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Grain elevators often use paper markets to mitigate the risk of (or hedge) their cash grain positions, as well as establish a profit margin through basis trading. Typically, merchandisers use futures or forward contracts to perform these transactions. However, in order to liquidate a cash grain position, grain transportation must be arranged in order to deliver the grain to the buyer. For elevators located along the Mississippi River system selling to Gulf export elevators in New Orleans, that mode of grain transportation is most likely river barge. Contracts for barges are bought and sold by grain merchants either directly with …

Drip Irrigation For Commercial Vegetable And Fruit Production, Tiffany Maughn, Niel Allen, Dan Drost
All Current Publications
Drip irrigation is a highly efficient irrigation method well suited to many fruit and vegetable row crops. Drip tubing or tape discharges water to the soil through emitters positioned close to the plant. The drip tubing can be placed uncovered on the soil surface, under plastic mulch, buried in the soil, or suspended above the ground (e.g., on a trellis system). Water application rate is relatively low and irrigations are usually frequent. Properly designed and maintained drip-irrigation systems can have benefits that help increase the profitability of crop production.
